Powered by usb cable (and yes, you can have it plugged in while using it, without getting a buzzing noise), and greatly amplifies the sound without distorting it or creating hissing or other problems. I actually really like the eq on it too, very easy to use.
Bought to take the very low volume input of my soundblaster play 3 DAC, and boost the volume to a sensible level for gaming. It does the job perfectly. I was struggling to hear some game sounds before, even with windows volume at 100%, but I've now got windows down to 80% and it's STILL so much louder than before. The sound is very crisp and clean still, and the eq dials mean that you can easily adjust things on the fly if you feel like you're not getting the full "oomph". I now feel like I'm hearing actual gunshots again in games, instead of a very flat and quiet volume I was getting before.
Having the line out also means I can plug a set of small speakers in, so that I can use those if I don't fancy wearing headphones for certain games.
If I had to pick fault anywhere, I'd say it's a shame that there's no audio cable included in the box, as you obviously need one to plug into whatever device your headphones were previously plugged into. Also, maybe a switch to enable/disable the line out, as I'll now have to manually unplug the speakers when I'm using headphones.
Those are just 2 very small "would have been nice to have"s though.
Over all, I'm very happy with this little amp. I just have regular headphones, so using the low gain mode too, so imagine how loud this thing could go with decent cans!
Excellent bit of kit. Well worth the price.
