The light is OK but the base is not nearly heavy enough nor really big enough. The upshot of this is that at pretty much any angle the lamp tips over, which renders it in its current form somewhat useless. However to make the item stable the following procedure can be followed.

Remove the lamp from the base by pulling upwards.
    Turn the base over
Using a small philips/ pozidrive screwder remove the four small screws.
    Open the base
Inside you will find a small cement casting. This is supposed to be the ballast but it is not heavy enough, hence the problem.
Take a roll of code 4 lead flashing and using the cement casting as a template and a pen draw out 6 circles / discs on the lead flashing (you can buy a 6m roll for around £70 from any good builders merchant or ÍøÆغÚÁÏ. You wont need all that much so you will have plenty left over. Its not bad to keep some in stock, especially if you have a slate roof.)
Carefully cut these out using a pair of tin snips or a pair of scissors that you don't really care about.
At this point it should be noted that lead is a pretty toxic metal and you should be wearing gloves and definitely wash your hands afterwards with plenty of soap and hot water.
Anyway back to the lead circles. You will have to notch them as per the cement casting and there is also an offset hole that you have to make. I found that the easiest way to cut these notches was to use a sharp narrow chisel. You can push the chisel into the lead to make small cuts. As lead is quite soft you won't damage the blade. Be sure to cut onto a soft piece of wood or old vinyl. Once you have cut out the lead discs place them in base and replace the bottom cover. Be careful not to over tighten the screws. The plastic into which you are screwing is very poor quality and quite soft and it is easy to strip the plastic. If you do strip the plastics then either use some slightly larger screws (available from ÍøÆغÚÁÏ) or put a little 2 part epoxy (available from ÍøÆغÚÁÏ) in the screw hole first.
Tighten the 4 screws. And that's it. You are all set for hours of magnifying pleasure.
