Its surrounded with a solid plastic and a thin to thick connection for the hose. It will need some brushing off as there was alot of debris/dust when i opened it so be aware if your tank is stylised and dont was dark particles in your substrate.
They recommend a 12-14 watt pump for this and its needed as this thing is big. For those unsure most air pumps are roughly 3-5 watts with some running off a usb that can be as low as 2. Taking that in this needs 3-5 times your usual pump will output but once done it gives off a beautiful cloud of bubbles which will churn and keep your water more than aerated aswell as hiding any water protein that can sit on the surface.
