4K Ultra HD Not Working on Fire TV Devices

To troubleshoot issues with 4K Ultra HD playback, use the Audio and Video Diagnostics tool on your Fire TV device.

The Audio and Video Diagnostics tool checks the capabilities of connected HDMI devices like your TV, soundbar, or AV receiver. The tool tests your TV's maximum resolution and refresh rate, HDR, and Dolby Vision support. It also detects support for various surround sound standards.

Note: The Audio and Video Diagnostics tool isn’t available on all Fire TV devices.

  1. Check that your equipment supports the video resolution you’re trying to use. To check supported video settings, use the Audio and Video Diagnostics tool on your Fire TV device:
    1. Go to Settings on your Fire TV device.
    2. Select Display & Sounds.
    3. Select Audio/Video Diagnostics.
  2. If the max resolution detected is 4K, but the content you’re streaming is at a lower resolution:
    1. Make sure you have a streaming service with a plan that supports streaming in 4K Ultra HD.
    2. Check that you have a strong internet connection, and there isn’t any issue with your bandwidth.
    3. Go to your TV's picture or input settings and check that the resolution is configured to 4K, HDR, or FHD. Follow the manufacturer's instructions if needed.
    4. Try moving your Fire TV device closer to the router or use a wired connection with an Ethernet adapter.
    5. Make sure you’re using a high-speed HDMI cable. Try to unplug the HDMI cable and plug it in again.
    6. Sometimes your Fire TV device streams at 1080p 60 Hz for smoother playback if you have a 4K 30 Hz Dolby Vision TV. Your TV might support 4k 60 Hz resolutions with other formats. To set your resolution to 4K 60 Hz, go to Settings on your Fire TV device and then Display & Sounds.
  3. If the resolution you want to use isn’t detected, it can’t be played with your current equipment setup:
    1. If you’re using an AV receiver or soundbar, make sure it’s connected to an HDMI port with HDCP 2.2. The port also needs to support pass-through for 4K resolutions.
    2. Make sure that your equipment supports 4K resolutions and is set up correctly. Check the user manual that came with your devices or contact the manufacturer for more help.
