Puerto Rican producer DJ Luian is a foundational figure in the reggaeton scene, responsible for some of the sounds that helped shape the genre. He first rose to acclaim with a string of enormous hits beginning in the 2010s. Using social media channels to share his music, he amassed a devoted fan base and parlayed success with his solo career into the formation of his Hear This Music record label. Collaborating with rising stars like J Balvin, Bad Bunny, Farruko, and many others, DJ Luian scored hit after hit, going from producing reggaeton bangers like 2014's "Tremenda Sata" to more R&B-leaning singles like 2018's "Bubalu," and collaborating with Anuel AA on the 2023 smash hit "Mejor Que Yo."
DJ Luian was born Luian Malave in 1990. After years of behind-the-scenes work, he began to make a name for himself with production of reggaeton singer Don Omar's 2010 outing Meet the Orphans. That year, he began posting videos of his tracks online and his fame grew quickly. A string of high-energy singles began to catch on virally, and in 2015, Luian formed the Hear This Music label along with partners the Mambo Kingz. Signing the Spanish trap phenom Bad Bunny, the label quickly started producing high-profile songs, with Luian often at the production helm. Though DJ Luian issued several full-length projects and collaborations with artists like Arcangel and Wise the Gold Pen, Hear This Music seemed to have the most success with singles. Luian produced huge tracks over the next several years, working on songs like Bad Bunny's "Mia" featuring Drake, a collaboration with Mambo Kingz, Anuel AA, and De la Ghetto called "La Ocasión," a remix of Bad Bunny's massive hit "Soy Peor," and many others. He continued releasing major songs, offering up "Verte Ir" in 2019, "Mas Rica Que Ayer" and "Mejor Que Yo" in 2023, and "Razones" in 2024 -- all are collaborations with Anuel AA, and they all streamed in the tens or hundreds of millions. ~ TiVo Staff
Well versed in reggaeton, Latin trap, pop, and hip-pop, De la Ghetto is a prolific urbano artist born in the U.S. and raised in Puerto Rico. He first established himself alongside onetime duo partner Arcángel, landing a major reggaeton hit with 2005's "Ven Pégate." Known for his bilingual rhyming style delivered in a percussive, rapid-fire cadence, De la Ghetto forged a solo career after the duo's 2007 split. While albums like 2008's Masacre Musical and 2018's Mi Movimiento have performed well on the charts, his focus has largely been on the numerous singles, mixtape tracks, and collaborations that have made him a staple of Latin radio, video, and streaming. As a featured artist, he has been involved with hits like "Aparentemente" by Yaga & Mackie (with Arcángel), Nicky Jam's "Si Tú No Estás," and "1,2,3" with Sofia Reyes and Jason Derulo. De la Ghetto's success has continued into the 2020s; his singles have been streamed into the millions and in 2023 he began a new era with his first independent album, GZ.
Born Rafael Castillo on September 17, 1982, in New York City, he later moved with his family to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and became involved with the city's burgeoning reggaeton scene. In 2004 he founded Arcángel y De la Ghetto, a duo with fellow New York City-born Puerto Rican artist Arcángel (born Austin Santos). They first established themselves with the song "Ven Pégate," which is featured on the popular Hector El Father-hosted mixtape album Sangre Nueva (2005). Throughout 2005 and 2006, Arcángel y De la Ghetto were featured on a variety of reggaeton albums, including Luny Tunes' Mas Flow: Los Benjamins (2006), and were associated with Baby Records, the label of Zion (of the duo Zion & Lennox).
Arcángel announced in December 2006 that he was embarking on a solo career and founding a label of his own. In the wake of Arcángel's announcement, De la Ghetto launched his own solo career and was subsequently featured on one of his biggest hits to date, the Tito El Bambino and Randy remix of "Siente el Boom" featured on the album Top of the Line: El Internacional (2007). Also in 2007 he scored his second major hit with "Sensación del Bloque," another of his collaborations with Randy.
Following these mainstream breakthroughs, De la Ghetto made his major-label full-length album debut with Masacre Musical (2008); it peaked on the Top Latin Albums chart at number 46, and its single "Dificil" peaked at number 42 on the Hot Latin Songs chart. While the artist didn't issue another full-length for five years, he was intensely active. In 2009 alone, he issued five singles from Musical Massacre, including the Top 40 Hot Latin Songs track "Tu Te Imaginas." De la Ghetto and his label and management kept up his profile by issuing tracks for dozens of compilations as well as his own singles.
In 2013 he released the full-length Geezy Boys: The Album; it netted five hit singles including "Saciar la Sed," "Ahà Ahà AhÃ," and "Sincero Amor" (whose remix featured Arcángel). De la Ghetto and his team began issuing videos that kept his tracks and collaborations popping up on social media and streaming charts. Between 2016 and 2018, he placed no less than nine songs on the Hot Latin Songs chart, and six more on other select lists including Latin Airplay and Tropical Songs, while upping his output as a guest exponentially. In fact, De la Ghetto was, by 2016, one of the most in-demand studio talents in reggaeton.
His third album, Mi Movimiento, was issued by Warner Music in September of 2018. It included 17 tracks, many of which were selected by fans on his social media accounts. The set included collaborations with a large number of artists, including fellow chart-masters Wisin, Ozuna, Daddy Yankee, Maluma, Fetty Wap, and more. In July 2020, he appeared alongside Arcángel on Anitta's track "Tócame." Three months later, he returned with his fourth studio album, Los Chulitos, which featured guest appearances by Nicky Jam, Manuel Turizo, Justin Quiles, Jowell & Randy, and Farruko. A typically prolific period followed over the next two years with highlights like "Cuando Bebe," a multi-artist super-collaboration that included Myke Towers, Mambo Kingz, and Jay Menez, among others. 2022's "Loco Por Pearrearte (Remix)" with Rauw Alejandro was also a big hit, and maintained the demand for his next full-length, and first as an independent artist, GZ, in 2023. ~ Jason Birchmeier
Reggaeton and Latin trap artist Arcángel has a trademark cool yet expressive tenor singing voice, which contrasts with a certain melodic sweetness and gritty lyrics in Spanish and English. As a rapper, his smooth, slow delivery is grainy and expressive. Before going solo, he established his identity as a member of the duo Arcángel y De la Ghetto during the mid-2000s. Their hits, including "Agresivo" and "El Pistolón," established his reputation sufficiently to warrant a solo career. Arcángel is as well-known a collaborator as he is a solo artist, and among the most ubiquitous guests on reggaeton and Latin trap recordings. That said, his own recordings, including 2008's Top 100 entry El Fenómeno, are also successful. 2013's Sentimiento, Eleganza, & Maldad (SEM) was certified gold in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Two years later, the official release of his Los Favoritos mixtape with DJ Luian topped the Latin Album charts and was also certified gold. 2018's Ares delivered the hit "Original" (feat. Bad Bunny) on its way to a Top Five finish, while 2019 saw the release of no less than a dozen singles including the streaming hit "Traficante" (feat. King Goyi). Over the next few years, he built on his previous established platform with releases like Los Favoritos 2 (2020), Sr. Santos (2022), Sentimiento, Elegancia y Más Maldad (2023), and Papi Arca (2024).
Born Austin Santos on December 23, 1986, in New York City, Arcángel established himself in tandem with De la Ghetto and the song "Ven y Pegate" on the popular Hector el Father-hosted compilation album Sangre Nueva. Throughout 2005 and 2006, Arcángel y De la Ghetto were featured on a variety of reggaeton albums, including Luny Tunes' Mas Flow: Los Benjamins, and were associated with Baby Records, Zion's (of the duo Zion & Lennox) label. Arcángel announced that he was embarking on a solo career and starting a label of his own in December 2006.
Arcángel's solo releases began appearing sporadically. While "Chica Virtual," his guest feature on DJ Nelson's Flow la Discoteka, Vol. 2 (2007), was a minor hit, his full-length solo debut, La Maravilla, went unreleased after it was leaked to the internet in 2008. At the end of the year, Arcángel was able to release El Fenómeno. It was produced by some of reggaeton's top beatmakers including Luny Tunes, Mambo Kingz, Tainy, and Noriega. The album featured mostly new material, though it also included a handful of songs originally planned for La Maravilla. The lead single for El Fenómeno, "Por Amar a Ciegas," peaked inside the Top 40 at Latin Airplay and drove the album into the Top 20 on the Latin Albums chart. He also enlisted his mother to manage him and founded his own production company.
Despite the chart success, Arcángel didn't rush another recording. Instead, he toured Europe and released the mixtape The Problem Child in the spring of 2010. Upon his return from the road, he released a second mixtape, Optimus A.R.C.A., and began assembling tracks for a proper follow-up album. He also contributed a pair of tunes to the popular El Imperio Nazza compilation series.
Sophomore long-player Sentimiento, Elegancia y Maldad didn't appear until three years later. Its first single, "Hace Mucho Tiempo" (feat. Daddy Yankee and Baby Johnny), did well at radio and streaming before peaking at 13 on the Tropical Songs chart. The album, however, managed to hit the top spot on the Latin Albums chart. Over the next 18 months, Arcángel spent the majority of his time collaborating with and contributing to recordings by others, including a prestigious appearance on Maluma's smash hit Pretty Boy, Dirty Boy.
The notion of collaboration -- so important in reggaeton -- became the motivating factor behind 2015's now-classic mixtape, Los Favoritos. Enlisting DJ Luian as a co-billed conspirator, Arcángel set about recording tracks with his favorite genre artists from two generations, including J Balvin, Maluma, Nicky Jam, Ñejo Flow, Farruko, J Alvarez, and Wisin; there were 20 in all. The single "Tu Cuerpo Me Hace Bien" landed inside the Top Ten on the Latin Rhythm chart and topped the Tropical Songs list. The full-length spent 13 weeks in the Latin Top 40. Over the next three years, Arcángel focused his attention on frontloading singles and videos, among them, "Cula en la Clara" (featuring Tali), "Zum Zum," and "Original" (feat. Bad Bunny). They all charted. In 2018, he dropped the full-length Ares, which all but abandoned reggaeton and dembow rhythms in favor of trap beats and Latin pop. The set entered the Latin Albums chart at number five. In 2019, Arcángel released his next studio set, the deeply personal Historias de un Capricornio; it featured appearances from Bad Bunny and Ozuna, among others.
Over the next year, Arcángel issued a dozen singles and videos, including the charting remixes of "Sigues con El," (feat. Sech and Romeo Santos) and "Wow" (feat. Bryant Myers, Nicky Jam, Darrell, and El Alfa). Arcángel also revisited the mixtape concept explored on 2015's platinum-selling Los Favoritos with DJ Luian. Titled Los Favoritos 2, its 18 tracks included some 25 collaborations with male artists who included Rauw Alejandro, Ozuna, Wisin & Yandel, Maluma, and Farruko. There were only two solo appearances from Arcángel on the set: The opener "Payaso" and the title track "El Favorito." Issued in late October, Los Favoritos 2, debuted at the top of several charts, including Latin Albums. Pleased with the success of the formula, he kept the project going in 2021 with Los Favoritos 2.5, another guest-heavy project with nearly as many tracks as the previous volume. Among Arcángel's numerous 2022 singles were "JS4E" and the Bad Bunny-assisted hit "La Jumpa," both of which anchored his next album, Sr. Santos, released that December. A typically lengthy set, it featured guests like Myke Towers, Eladio Carrion, and YOVNGCHIMI and made a strong mainstream showing on the U.S. pop charts at number 37. 2023 was another prolific year for Arcángel. He released numerous tracks including "Kame Hame," the Jay Wheeler collaboration "TRAPPii," and "La Chamba" with Peso Pluma, the latter of which heralded his 2023 full-length, Sentimiento, Elegancia y Más Maldad. Anchored by other guest spots from Grupo Frontera, Quevedo, and Rauw Alejandro, the album cracked the top 10 of the Latin charts. A surprise EP, Papi Arca, arrived in December 2024 and featured the single "BFF" with Eladio Carrion. ~ Jason Birchmeier & Thom Jurek
Juan Carlos Ozuna Rosado, professionally known as Ozuna, is a record-setting, award-winning reggaeton singer and songwriter from Puerto Rico. He writes positive, uplifting songs that encourage people to work toward their dreams while avoiding the use of profanity out of respect for his daughter. He made his breakthrough in 2016 with the single "La Ocasión," which peaked in the Top 30 of the Hot Latin Songs chart, and he continued with a string of high-profile collaborations before issuing his debut, Odisea, in 2017. The album topped the charts, a feat Ozuna repeated with 2019's urbano-leaning Nibiru, 2020's Enoc, and the following year's Los Dioses, his third collaborative album with Anuel AA. In 2022, the artist released OzuTochi, followed by the surprise release of Cosmo in late 2023. A 2024 single, "Guay," with Bad Gyal was a hit in Spain.
A songwriter since the age of 12, Ozuna grew up in Puerto Rico, later spending time in New York City before his career took off. In 2014, he signed a record contract and began posting singles online. By 2015, songs such as "Si Tu Marido No Te Quiere" had become radio hits across Latin America, and he'd performed concerts in numerous countries. In early 2016, he joined DJ Luian, Mambo Kingz, De la Ghetto, Arcángel, and Anuel AA on the track "La Ocasión," which kicked off a modest chart run for the nascent artist. Months later, he released a remix of his song "No Quiere Enamorarse," which featured superstar Daddy Yankee. The track racked up millions of streaming views. He followed it with "Dile Que Tu Me Quieres," "Si Tu Marido No Te Quiere [Remix]," and "En la Intimidad," all of which charted in the Top 30.
In 2017, Ozuna delivered his full-length debut album, Odisea, which featured guest appearances by De la Ghetto, Anuel AA, J Balvin, and others. Included on the record were the singles "Tell Him That You Love Him," "Your Photo," and "A Flower." In September, the album debuted at number one on the Top Latin Albums chart. He also contributed to a handful of collaborations with Daddy Yankee, Wisin, J Balvin, Chris Jeday, and others. One of the most high-profile duets was 2018's "La Modelo" with American rapper Cardi B, which marked Ozuna's first entry on the Hot 100. His sophomore effort, Aura, arrived later that year and peaked in the Top Ten on the Billboard 200, again debuting at number one on the Latin Albums chart. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the multi-platinum Puerto Rican-Dominican singer held four world records by the age of 27: He attained one for most videos to reach one billion views on YouTube, another for being the solo artist with the longest reign at number one on the Top Latin Albums chart for his debut Odisea. In addition, he broke the record for most Billboard Latin Music Award nominations, with 23 across 15 categories; he also holds the record for most wins by a single artist with 11.
In 2019, Ozuna delivered more than a handful of charting singles including "Baila Baila Baila" (plus two hit remixes), "Amor Genuino," "VacÃa Sin MÃ" with Darell, "Yo x Ti, Tu x Mi" with Rosalia, "Muito Calor" with Brazilian singer Anitta, and "Hasta Que Salga el Sol." In late November, he released this third long-player, the 18-track Nibiru. Named for a pseudoscientific planet, the set included 18 tracks; it became his third straight number one debut on the Latin Albums chart. Ozuna referred to the outing as an urbano rather than reggaeton album. In addition to some of the singles, it included a series of collaborations with Diddy and DJ Snake ("Eres Top"), Snoop Dogg and Anuel AA ("Patek"), Dalex and Nicky Jam ("Reggaeton in Paris"), Swae Lee ("Sin Pensar"), and Sech ("Yo Tengo Una Gata"). Ozuna released one more single from that album in April 2020, "Temporal" with Willy Rodriguez (of Cultura Profética), and guested in the Black Eyed Peas single "Mamacita" along with J. Rey Soul (on the group's album Translation). A couple months later, he issued the summery single "Caramelo."
In September 2020, Ozuna issued Enoc, his fourth album. In addition to "Carmelo," it included the advance charting singles "Del Mar" (featuring Sia and Doja Cat) and "Una Locura" (featuring J Balvin and Chencho Corleone). Among its 20 tracks were guest appearances by Cosculluela, Myke Towers, Wisin, Arcángel, and Juanka, on steamy opener "Enigma Occultos." Zion & Lennox joined Ozuna on "Que Tu Esperas," and Towers and Karol G both guested on the remix of "Carmelo." The release debuted in the number one spot at Top Latin Albums and topped numerous streaming charts. In January 2021, Anuel AA and Ozuna issued their third collaborative long-player, Los Dioses. The 12-track set was their first to enter the Latin Albums and Latin streaming charts at number one.
Later that year, Ozuna released the bachata single "Señor Juez," followed in 2022 by tracks like "Deprimida" and "G Wagon. His fifth full-length, OzuTochi, appeared in October. The diverse 18-track set traced Ozuna's roots through the musical styles of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic while traveling across styles as diverse as dembow ("Perreo y Dembow"), techno-fueled merengue ("Un Lio"), baile funk ("Cielos Rosado"), rock ("La Copa") EDM, and of course, his trademark reggaeton romantico ("Vida," "Manana," and "Favorita"). His collaborators included Arcangel, Chencho Corleone, Feid, J Balvin, and Danny Ocean, among others. Upon release, the record entered the Top Latin Albums chart at number five.
2023 saw Ozuna experimenting with Afrobeats on the seven-song EP Afro and in November, he announced the imminent release of his long-player Cosmo. Appearing a week later, the diverse, 15-track set included collaborations with Chencho Corleone, Sky Rompiendo, Maldy, De la Ghetto, Anuel AA, Chris Jedi, David Guetta, Jhayco, Lito MC Cassidy, and many more. In 2024 Ozuna teamed up with Spanish singer Bad Gyal, hitting Spain's Top Ten with "Guay." ~ Paul Simpson & Neil Z. Yeung
Anuel AA is a Puerto Rican MC whose thoroughly urban music seamlessly melds reggaeton and trap. He is one of the Boricua rappers who spearheaded the Latin trap movement. His uncompromising lyrics heavily detail sex ("Sola"), drugs ("Ayer"), and murder ("Nunca Sapo"). While his songs (and those of other Latin trap stars) are too risqué to be played on the radio, he quickly gained millions of followers through posting videos online and an intensely active social media presence -- mostly while in prison. According to many, Anuel AA is the true king of Latin trap since many other genre stars rose to prominence during his absence. His first three post-incarceration studio albums -- 2020's Emmanuel and 2021's Los Dioses (with Ozuna), and Las Leyendas Nunca Mueren -- all hit number one on the Top Latin Albums chart. 2022's LLMN2 debuted at number two and placed four tracks on the Latin singles charts. His 2023 collaboration with Mambo Kingz and DJ Luian, "Mejor Que Yo," was also a Top 20 Latin hit The single "Tacos Gucci" appeared in 2024.
Born Emmanuel Santiago Gazmey, his father, José Gazmey, was the vice-president of the A&R department of Sony Music Entertainment's Puerto Rican division. After Anuel AA began posting songs online in 2010, they racked up thousands of hits from around the world. With assistance from Ñengo Flow, Ozuna, Arcángel, and others, his gritty, bouncy sound and aggressive lyric attack gained popularity via millions of views for his early singles and remixes, and came to the attention of Rick Ross, who signed him to the Latin division of Maybach Music Group. Anuel AA released a well-received mixtape in February 2016.
He was arrested on charges of gun possession when various firearms and ammunition were discovered in the trunk of a car in which he was a passenger, resulting in the #FreeAnuel hashtag campaign among his international fan base. Nevertheless, his management continued uploading songs from his vault while he was incarcerated. He even managed to record new material behind bars. "Yesterday 2" featured collaborations from J Balvin, Nicky Jam, and Cosculluela. Anuel AA continued recording while inside; however, he often sang through phones during calls. His videos resonated with fans and racked up over 500 million views. Numerous songs featuring his voice appeared with some regularity. Ozuna labeled him a guest on "Bebé," the hit single from his successful 2017 album Odisea -- which spent 32 consecutive weeks comfortably atop Billboard's Top Latin Albums. Released in December 2016, a remix of Anuel AA's own "Sola" had noteworthy guests such as Daddy Yankee and Wisin participating. Other singles sporting Anuel verses included Arcángel's "Rojo," Farruko's "Liberace," and Ñengo Flow's "47." Some earned RIAA Latin certifications. Anuel AA received a platinum certification for the single "Ayer," produced by DJ Nelson.
Anuel AA, who spent no less than 90 days in solitary confinement, surprised the music world by releasing the full-length album Real Hasta La Muerte to streaming and digital platforms in 2018. It debuted at number 51 on the Billboard 200 and claimed the top spot on Top Latin Albums, taking Odisea down a peg. The Ozuna-assisted party anthem "Brindemos" appeared at number 48 on Hot Latin Songs before an actual video was released. After being awarded the Billboard Latin Music Award for New Artist of the Year in 2019, Anuel AA issued a barrage of tracks off his 2020 album Emmanuel, including the Karol G collaborations "Secreto" and "China," the latter of which also included Daddy Yankee. New tracks continued to leak out into 2020, and in May of that year Anuel AA appeared alongside Nicki Minaj on a remix of Black Jonas Point's song "La Bebe." Other collaborators on the full-length included Travis Barker (on a Spanish cover of Bob Marley's "No Woman, No Cry"), Karol G, Tego Calderon, Bad Bunny, Farruko, Lil Wayne, Zion, and more. The 22-track Emmanuel entered the Top 200 at number eight and was eventually certified six times platinum (Latin).
In January 2021, Anuel AA released Los Dioses, a collaborative album with Ozuna. It became his third set to top Billboard's Latin Albums chart. Later in the year, "Location" (with Karol G) and "Los de Siempre" (with Chris Jedi) appeared. In November, he issued Las Leyendas Nunca Mueren. It debuted at number one on the Hot Latin Albums chart and began its run on the Top 200 at number 29. He followed it with a completely sold-out, eight-month tour.
In March 2022, the reggaetonero was back. He issued the single "Si Tu Me Busca," in collaboration with rapper/girlfriend Yailin la Mas Viral. It peaked at number 12 on Latin Digital Songs and charted in eight countries. May's "¿Qué Nos Pasó?" hit in over a dozen. In June, he and Yailin la Mas Viral surprised fans with a wedding announcement.
July's "La Llevo Al Cielo" (ft. Ñengo Flow) charted in more than 20 countries including the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Anuel AA followed with the video single "Malo," with collaborative help from Randy and Zion. It registered more than 14 million views during its first week. In early July, he canceled his long-planned U.S. tour in order to "recharge his batteries" and finish his fourth album.
LLNM2 appeared in December 2022. Originally purposed as an EP titled Me Fui de Gira, the completed project comprised a whopping 33 tracks and was a sequel to the previous year's Las Leyendas Nunca Mueren. The collaboration-rich set offered more than 15 guests -- David Guetta, DaBaby, and Bryant Myers among them -- entered Top Latin Albums chart at number two. Four of its tracks likewise made appearances on the Hot Latin Songs list including "La Máquina," with Jowell & Randy, De la Ghetto, and Yailin La Mas Viral, as well as "Sufro," with Kodak Black and Nengo Flow. The full-length also placed at 30 in the all-genre Top 200. In 2023, he scored more Top 20 Latin hits joining forces with Mambo Kingz and DJ Luian for both "Más Rica Que Ayer" and "Mejor Que Yo." The team also released "Baby" with Quavo. Anuel made guest appearances on singles by acts including Nio Garcia and Marshmello, and released solo songs such as "Glock, Glock, Glock." In 2024, he appeared on Jennifer Lopez's "Rebound," and released the track "Tacos Gucci." ~ Paul Simpson & Thom Jurek
