Co-founded by Grammy-winning rapper/producer J. Cole and manager Ibrahim Hamad, Dreamville Records has been behind full-length projects from the likes of Cozz, Lute, JID, and Ari Lennox. In addition to these albums and Cole's chart-topping releases, the Dreamville roster has been promoted with a series of compilations, Revenge of the Dreamers, launched in 2014. They've followed the chart-topping, Grammy-nominated, platinum-certified Revenge of the Dreamers III (2019) with D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape (2022) and the Creed III soundtrack (2023).

Although Dreamville's beginning pre-dates Cole's 2011 mainstream breakthrough with Cole World: The Sideline Story, the label didn't truly lift off until 2013, when Cole and Hamad arranged a distribution deal through major-label Interscope. Revenge of the Dreamers arrived shortly thereafter in January 2014. Cole, who had recently achieved his second straight number one album with Born Sinner, was directly involved in seven of the 11 tracks, joined by Dreamville signees Omen and Bas, among other collaborators. A sequel, even more concise than the first volume, followed toward the end of the next year with Cozz, Lute, and Ari Lennox added to the mix. This volume charted, entering the Billboard 200 at number 24 with a Top Five showing on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

Dreamville's stock continued to rise in 2019. That April, they held the first Dreamville Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina, Cole's home state. Three months later, they offered Revenge of the Dreamers III, a weightier set with the label's artists showcased alongside Young Nudy, Saba, Vince Staples, Dreezy, Ty Dolla $ign, and many others outside the roster. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in July 2019 and was nominated for Best Rap Album in the 62nd Grammy Awards. The competitive nature of the sessions was exemplified by "Down Bad," with JID, Bas, J. Cole, Nudy, and the duo EarthGang splitting mike duties over a taut Pluss production. That track earned the crew a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Rap Performance. A platinum certification for the parent release was awarded shortly thereafter.

Dreamville then reconnected with DJ Drama (host of JID's 2018 album DiCaprio 2) for D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape. Its late-March 2022 release preceded the second Dreamville Festival, which expanded to a two-day event in Raleigh. D-Day landed at number 11 on the Billboard 200. 2023 saw Dreamville provide the soundtrack for Creed III, which included the single "Blood, Sweat, and Tears," a collaboration with Bas, Black Sherif, and Kel-P. ~ Andy Kellman

One of the most commercially successful rappers since his 2011 breakthrough, J. Cole has remained prominent despite the increasingly pensive and lyrical nature of each of his subsequent projects. The first artist signed to mentor Jay-Z's Roc Nation label, the Fayetteville, North Carolina native went double platinum with "Work Out," the lead single from Cole World: The Sideline Story (2011), igniting a streak of number one albums that continued with Born Sinner (2013), the Grammy-nominated 2014 Forest Hills Drive (2014), 4 Your Eyez Only (2016), and KOD (2018). Cole has used his influence to support younger talent with his own Dreamville Records, most visibly through the Revenge of the Dreamers series of highly collaborative compilations showcasing emerging talent. Revenge of the Dreamers III (2019), another chart-topping LP on Cole's imprint, was up for a Grammy in the category of Best Rap Album. The rapper/producer has since returned to the top of the Billboard 200 with The Off-Season (2021) and has helped assemble another Dreamville release, D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape. He also issued the 2024 mixtape Might Delete Later. All the while, he has stayed sharply critical of issues endemic to hip-hop and society at large, concerned more about stimulating minds than providing entertainment.

Born in Frankfurt, Germany, and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Jermaine Cole got into hip-hop through his stepfather's copy of 2Pacalypse Now, which led to a deep fascination with 2Pac and immersion in the work of Nas, the Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, and Canibus, among many other artists. Cole's high school grades earned him an academic scholarship to attend St. John's University in New York City, where the fledgling MC and beatmaker knew he could make progress as a musician. After numerous days spent outside Jay-Z's office in hopes of giving him a demo, Cole finally ran into his idol, but the reception was well below chilly. He was shocked weeks later by a call from the man, and was even more surprised to be asked to contribute to The Blueprint 3, heard on the appropriately titled "A Star Is Born." With only one mixtape in his discography, namely The Come Up -- boasting his own production credits beside those of major figures such as Salaam Remi, Large Professor, Just Blaze, and Kanye West -- Cole signed with Roc Nation. By the end of 2010, he issued two tapes for the label, The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights.

In 2011, Roc Nation released Cole's official debut, Cole World: The Sideline Story, which debuted on top of the Billboard 200. Its biggest single, "Work Out," became Cole's first Top 40 pop hit as a headliner, reaching number 13 and eventually going double platinum. The follow-up, Born Sinner, followed in 2013 and spawned singles such as the Miguel collaboration "Power Trip" (a number 19 hit) and the TLC-assisted "Crooked Smile" (number 27). "Power Trip" also earned Cole his first recognition from Grammy voters, who nominated the track for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Titled after the address of his childhood home, 2014 Forest Hills Drive continued his streak of number one LPs in 2014. Its "No Role Models" scraped the Top 40 and preceded the parent release's Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. (A lower-charting single, "Apparently," was up the same year for Best Rap Performance.) Rather strikingly, 2014 Forest Hills Drive did not feature any guest artists, but Cole was no isolationist. A distribution deal with major-label Interscope facilitated the outward growth of Dreamville, a label Cole and manager Ibrahim Hamad established pre-fame. Within a couple years of partnering with Interscope, Dreamville supported albums from Bas, Cozz, and Omen, and issued two Revenge of the Dreamers compilations.

By the time Cole released his grim fourth album, 4 Your Eyez Only, in 2016, he had platinum certifications for his three previous full-lengths, ten charting Billboard Hot 100 singles as a top-billed artist, and three as a featured MC, including Jeremih's "Planes," yet another Grammy-nominated recording. 4 Your Eyez Only lengthened his streak of chart-toppers. Thanks to a change in Billboard's chart methodology, all of its songs entered the Hot 100 -- a somewhat ironic feat, given that it was his least pop-oriented work to that point. In 2018, Cole released KOD, a dark and reflective cautionary recording that tackled subjects like mental health, drug dependency, and greed. Topping the charts upon release, KOD included two "features" from Cole himself, in pitched-down form as a hollowed-out addict named kiLL edward. The third and Grammy-nominated volume of the Revenge of the Dreamers series, released in 2019, yielded another headlining hit for Cole with "Middle Child."

His sixth album, the Grammy-nominated The Off-Season, went straight to number one in May 2021 and included guest appearances by 21 Savage, Lil Baby, and 6lack. The following year saw the release of the fourth Dreamville compilation, D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape, a number 11 Billboard 200 hit with Cole directly involved in one-third of the tracks. A pair of non-album singles, "On the Street" with J-Hope and "The Secret Recipe" with Lil Yachty, both cracked the Hot 100 in 2023, and he kicked off 2024 with another mixtape, Might Delete Later, which boasted standouts like "7 Minute Drill" and "Crocodile Tearz." In November of 2024, Cole re-released his 2009 mixtape The Warm Up on streaming services at the same time as the third episode of his podcast Inevitable, which centered around the tape. Reintroduced to streaming audiences, The Warm Up entered the Billboard 200 chart at the 159 position. The fifth episode focused on Cole's third, 2010 mixtape, Friday Night Lights, and again the tape was released on streaming services in tandem with the podcast episode. ~ Andy Kellman & David Jeffries
