Latto is a highly successful rapper from Atlanta known for her witty lyrics and effortless style. After winning a TV competition as a teenager, she quickly signed a deal and gained attention. Following the release of several mixtapes, she broke through to a wider audience with her 2019 anthem "B*tch from Da Souf" and her first proper studio album, 2020's Queen of Da Souf. That record cracked the Top 50 of the Billboard 200 and paved the way for 2022's 777, which hit number 15. In 2023, Latto was nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards. "Put It on Da Floor Again," her 2023 collaboration with Cardi B, was certified platinum. She released her third studio album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea, in August 2024.
Latto was born Alyssa Michelle Stephens in 1998 and grew up on the south side of Atlanta, where she started rapping at age ten. Identifying as biracial, with a Black father and white mother, she first adopted the stage name Miss Mulatto. Prior to appearing on TV, Stephens developed a strong local following by performing at various events, opening for other artists, and through her activity on social networks. In 2016, at age 16, she joined the cast of the Queen Latifah- and Jermaine Dupri-produced Lifetime reality TV rap show The Rap Game. After an eight-week boot camp-style competition in which she competed against four other aspiring rappers, Stephens was crowned the winner of The Rap Game. Following her win, she signed a recording contract with Dupri's So So Def Recordings and issued the single "No More Talking." Before 2016 was up, the rapper released an eight-song self-titled project. Soon afterward, she shortened her stage name to Latto and began work on new material.
In 2017, her style grew bolder and more self-assured on the Latto Let 'Em Know mixtape, a longer release that featured guest spots from Bandit Gang Marco, Lil Key, and Molly Brazzy. The next year, she returned with a self-titled ten-song mixtape. The rapper released a pair of EPs in 2019, with Big Latto appearing first. The EP included the single "B*tch from Da Souf," which became her biggest song to date. As a single, the track was streamed millions of times. In November 2019, she released another EP, Hit the Latto.
She then signed with RCA Records and returned in August 2020 with her debut full-length, Queen of Da Souf. The album, which hit number 44 on the Billboard 200, included the track "B*tch from Da Souf" as well as guest appearances from Gucci Mane, City Girls, 21 Savage, and others. In May 2021, she officially changed her performing name to Latto. That September, she reached number 14 on the Hot 100 with her song "Big Energy," the first single released off her sophomore full-length album, 2022's 777. Additional singles like "Soufside" and "Wheelie" featuring 21 Savage helped 777 reach number 15 on the Billboard 200. Latto closed out the year with the non-album single "FTCU" featuring GloRilla and Gangsta Boo. She earned a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2023 Grammy Awards and, later that year, issued the single "Lottery," which had her team up with Congolese Canadian singer Lu Kala. Latto released the single "Put It on Da Floor," which took off when Cardi B was featured on a remix titled "Put It on Da Floor Again." This version reached number 13 on the Hot 100 and was certified platinum. 2023 also saw Latto feature on South Korean singer Jung Kook's chart-topping debut solo single, "Seven."
Latto's 2024 single "Sunday Service" charted on the Hot 100, and preceeded the release of her third studio LP, Sugar Honey Iced Tea. That album arrived in August 2024 and debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200 chart. It included contributions from Young Nudy, Mariah the Scientist, Teezo Touchdown, and other notable names, and a deluxe edition included bonus material such as a remix of "Sunday Service" with new verses from Flo Milli and Megan Thee Stallion. ~ Matt Collar
Tennessee rapper GloRilla makes anthems that celebrate female independence with unapologetic intensity. Her 2022 Hitkidd-produced single "FNF (Let's Go)" was a viral smash, racking up more than eight million plays on streaming services and collecting nearly 25 million views of its accompanying video. GloRilla's overnight success quickly led CMG label boss Yo Gotti to sign her, and she issued subsequent singles like "Tomorrow" from the label showcase compilation Gangsta Art. Her debut EP, Anyway, Life's Great..., appeared later in 2022. Several singles were released in 2023, including "On Wat U On" (with Moneybagg Yo) and "Lick or Sum." The mixtape Ehhthang Ehhthang and the full-length debut GLORIOUS both arrived in 2024.
GloRilla was born and raised in the Frayser neighborhood of North Memphis. After singing in her church choir when she was younger, her teenage years found her listening to Chief Keef and rapping, encouraged by her cousin to take her music seriously and get into the studio. This resulted in early songs like "You Ain't Shit" in 2020 and "Westside Baby" in 2021. It was her 2022 collaboration with Hitkidd that really broke through. Shortly after connecting with the producer, GloRilla entered the studio with Hitkidd and recorded "FNF (Let's Go)," an anthem of independence full of both attitude and party-starting hooks. The song and its accompanying video were both completed in a single day, and GloRilla's charisma helped it go viral almost immediately. Her success reached the ears of CMG figurehead Yo Gotti, who readily signed her to his label.
As 2022 continued, GloRilla appeared on the CMG showcase release Gangsta Art, as well as a remix of "Just Say That" with Duke Deuce and Quavo. Her EP Anyway, Life's Great... appeared in November, including "FNF (Let's Go)" and "Tomorrow 2" featuring Cardi B. The release charted at number 11 on the Billboard 200. GloRilla began 2023 with the Moneybagg Yo collaboration "On Wat U On." "Internet Trolls" (with Hitkidd) followed, as well as a deluxe edition of Anyway, Life's Great..., including the Lil Durk-featuring "Ex's." "Lick or Sum" was released in May. GloRilla also collaborated with Gloss Up, Slimeroni, K Carbon, Aleza, and Tay Keith on the track "Wrong One." The Top 40 hit "Yeah Glo!" and Megan Thee Stallion collaboration "Wanna Be" appeared on GloRilla's 2024 mixtape Ehhthang Ehhthang. Her proper debut album, GLORIOUS (with guests ranging from Sexyy Red to Kirk Franklin), was issued in October, and like the previous mixtape, it debuted in the Top 20 of the Billboard 200. ~ TiVo Staff
Highly influential Memphis rapper Gangsta Boo started off as a prominent figure in underground rap circles but soon took command of more mainstream audiences as well. She was a member of the legendary Three 6 Mafia as early as their 1995 debut Mystic Stylez, and was making solo albums by 1998 with her Billboard-charting debut Enquiring Minds. As the years went on, Gangsta Boo appeared on tracks alongside OutKast, Eminem, Gucci Mane, Run the Jewels, and many of hip-hop's biggest names. Her fearlessness, charisma, and raw talent had an effect on rap in general, but especially paved the way for other female rappers who followed. Gangsta Boo died in 2023 while working on new album The BooPrint.
Gangsta Boo was born Lola Chantrelle Mitchell in Memphis, Tennessee, and was rapping by age 14. At age 16, she joined Three 6 Mafia when the group was still in their infancy, and would contribute to their albums from 1995 until leaving in 2001 to focus on her solo output. Her 1998 debut Enquiring Minds featured contributions from many of her Three 6 cohort, however, as did its 2001 follow-up Both Worlds *69. Both of the first two albums performed well and made the Billboard Top 200, and 2003's Enquiring Minds II: The Soap Opera did well commercially. By that time, Gangsta Boo's reputation as a strong force of Memphis rap had been well established, and she spent much of the 2000s and 2010s appearing as a featured guest on other artists' tracks. In addition to these frequent features and sporadically released mixtapes, she teamed up with longtime friend La Chat for the 2014 project Witch. Gangsta Boo remained active into the 2020s, releasing multiple singles and appearing on songs like 2022's "Big Momma" with Hannah Monds and the group track "FTCU" with Latto and GloRilla. Gangsta Boo died on January 1st, 2023 at the age of 43. At the time of her death she was working on new music. ~ TiVo Staff
