California-bred, Nashville-based singer and songwriter Emily Nenni is known for her twangy, vocally resonant brand of alt-country. She garnered buzz for her 2022 East West debut, On the Ranch, and returned in 2024 with Drive & Cry.
Born in San Jose, California, Nenni was raised in the coastal town of Orinda, where her parents introduced her to music at a young age. Growing up, she listened to country singers like Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, and Emmylou Harris, as well as rock artists like Bruce Springsteen, and even Motown and '60s girl group pop. By her teens, she had already started performing locally and writing her own songs. At 21, she moved to Nashville, where she ensconced herself in the bar scene and playing open-mic nights, all the while waitressing and working on a ranch to help pay her bills. In 2018, she released her independently produced debut album, Hell of a Woman.
Nenni eventually caught the attention of New West Records, which signed her and released her sophomore album, 2022's On the Ranch. Following tours with Kelsey Waldon and Joshua Hedley, she delivered her second New West album, 2024's John James Tourville-produced Drive & Cry. ~ Matt Collar
