Nigerian filmmaker Godwin Josiah also makes emotionally rich music that fuses West African rhythms with a yearning brand of pop songwriting. His musical debut came with his 2024 EP Road to Nirvana.
Born in Kaduna, Nigeria, in 2001, Godwin Josiah devoted much of his early life to filmmaking. In 2015, he and his cousins co-founded the film collective The Critics Company, and from there his work in film connected him to well-known talents like Morgan Freeman, J.J. Abrams, and Kemi Adetiba. When he began venturing into music in the early 2020s, Godwin got his start by sharing videos of his cover versions of songs by AJR, P-Square, French Montana, and others. His debut EP, Road to Nirvana, arrived in March 2024, offering up five tracks of dynamic songwriting that shunned the Afrobeats and brassy production typical to Nigerian pop of the time in favor for more subtle textures and reflective, mournful lyrical content. ~ TiVo Staff
