TOKiMONSTA is a Korean-American producer, songwriter, and DJ whose sound has expanded from experimental hip-hop to electro-pop, house, and alternative R&B. Emerging from the Los Angeles beat scene of the 2000s, her early releases, such as the 2010 full-length debut Midnight Menu, consisted of vibrant hip-hop instrumentals filled with off-kilter beats and neon synths threaded with occasional guitars and other instruments. She began working with singers and rappers more frequently, forming the duo Analogue Monsta with producer/vocalist Suzi Analogue and finding close collaborators in Gavin Turek, MNDR, and Anderson .Paak. Subsequent albums such as the Grammy-nominated Lune Rouge (2017) and Oasis Nocturno (2020) were ambitious, wide-scope statements fusing hip-hop, club music, and futuristic pop. More bold genre-mashing tracks like "Naked" with Channel Tres and "Say Yes" with VanJess arrived in 2021. Following additional collaborations, she released the solo "Say Tell Me" in 2023.
Born in the South Bay area of Los Angeles, Jennifer Lee's attention turned from classical piano lessons to making left-field recordings with an SP-404 and Fruityloops software. In college, as her love of hip-hop continued to blossom, she signed up for the Beat Cipher, a monthly open-mike night for beatmakers run by Project Blowed. She also frequented the weekly experimental hip-hop event Low End Theory, regarded as the epicenter of the Los Angeles beat scene, and became affiliated with Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label. Taking her stage name from "Toki," the Korean word for rabbit, and the hyperbolic hip-hop term "monsta," she released the brief, breakbeat-heavy instrumental EP Bedtime Lullabies and mixtape The Attention Deficit in 2008. Her first official releases arrived in 2010, including the EP Cosmic Intoxication on U.K. label Ramp Recordings, and full-length Midnight Menu for Listen Up Records, a subsidiary of the Japanese indie Art Union.
Around this time, Lee was also active in several side projects, making music with a tropical flavor as MAMA TOQUiLLA and electro as TOKiTRON, and collaborating with Suzi Analogue as Analogue Monsta. In 2011, she released the Creature Dreams EP on Brainfeeder, with two songs featuring Gavin Turek, who would soon become one of Lee's most frequent collaborators. Two years later, she returned with Half Shadows on the Ultra label. The album featured guest appearances from rapper Kool Keith and the electronic duo MNDR. In 2014, she launched her own Young Art label with the EP Desiderium. An EP with Turek titled You're Invited appeared in 2015.
In 2016, Lee issued FOVERE, featuring guests like Anderson .Paak, Jonny Pierce, and Kiya Lacey. That same year, she was diagnosed with Moyamoya syndrome, which resulted in a loss of language and the ability to process sound. A pair of brain surgeries helped save the musician, and she quickly returned with the release of Lune Rouge in 2017. The full-length included appearances by Selah Sue, MNDR, Isaiah Rashad, Joey Purp, Yuna, and more. A year after its release, Lune Rouge was nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. Lee continued issuing singles leading up to her 2020 full-length Oasis Nocturno, which included guest appearances by Bibi Bourelly, EARTHGANG, and more. Two non-album singles, "Naked" with Channel Tres and "Say Yes" with VanJess, arrived in 2021. The bittersweet, breakbeat-driven "Loved By U," with morgxn, was released in 2022. TOKiMONSTA collaborated with Rochelle Jordan for the 2023 track "Eats the Tale," and issued the solo single "Say Tell Me." Additionally, Analogue Monsta's 2012 full-length Boom was made available on streaming services for the first time. ~ Jason Lymangrover & Paul Simpson
Rapper Cakes Da Killa delivers his searing lyrics, effortless flows, and a personality defined by confidence and fearlessness over beats that blur the lines between rap, house, ballroom, and other styles of dance music. He began rapping in the early 2010s as part of a scene of other artists exploring both themes of queer liberation and the intersections of electronic dance styles and hip-hop. Cakes' style evolved from the raw brashness of early mixtapes like 2013's The Eulogy into the more refined production and occasional moments of emotional reflection on the 2022 album Svengali. Black Sheep, reflecting the rapper's difficulty fitting in with a particular style or scene, appeared in 2024.
Cakes Da Killa was born Rashard Bradshaw and grew up in New Jersey. He began rapping around 2011 and released his first mixtape, Easy Bake Oven, Vol. 1, that year. In his earliest days, Cakes was part of a scene of New York-centered LGBTQ artists like Mykki Blanco and Le1f, all of whom were experimenting with bringing together elements of house and hip-hop. His acclaim grew throughout the 2010s with both critical praise and support from a devoted fan base. Consistently active, he released multiple EPs and mixtapes before delivering his first studio album, Hedonism, in 2016 on the Ruffians label. Cakes relocated to Atlanta, and his second LP, Svengali, arrived six years later with help from special guest Sevndeep on the single "Sip of My Sip." Following the 2023 singles "Sex Drive" and "Cakewalk," his third full-length, Black Sheep, arrived in 2024, with guest appearances from Dawn Richard, Wuhryn Dumas, and STOUT. ~ TiVo Staff
