ALEXSUCKS combine the aesthetics of the East Coast rock revival of the early 2000s with a penchant for danceable rhythms and catchy melodies. The group became a standout with the quick-fire “Talk to You” in 2021, and further tightened up their sound on their 2023 debut album The Gutter. Their raucous live sets match the bleary-eyed energy of their strongest work.
Frontman Alex Alvarez was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, before relocating to Los Angeles. An avid skateboarder, Alvarez also pursued music in earnest, self-recording the EP Angsty Teen and standalone single “Talk to You” in 2021; the latter unexpectedly took off on social media. After recording a few more solo singles by himself in 2022, Alvarez retooled ALEXSUCKS into a proper band, recruiting friends he knew in the local skating scene: guitarist John Luther, bassist Garrett Orseno (who also performs under the name DJ Topgun) and drummer Ethan Demoulin. The change was palpable: as a band, ALEXSUCKS put an even stronger rhythmic focus on singles like “Can We Forget.” The quartet released their full-length debut The Gutter in 2023, recorded with producer Brendan O’Brien and featuring another runaway favorite, “6 Pack and Cigarettes.” The group’s fan base grew, culminating in sold-out performances at the legendary L.A. venue The Roxy and a set at the Life Is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas that same year. More standalone singles followed, including 2023’s “What’re We Doing Here” (promoted with a video featuring the band as LEGO mini-figures) and 2024’s “Whatever I Want.” ~ Mike Duquette
