Artist bios

One of Nigeria's most popular and prolific rappers, Olamide frequently scores radio hits and wins awards in his home country. Singing and rapping mainly in Yoruba and English, his music blends Afropop, dancehall, hip-hop, and other styles. The founder and CEO of record label and event management company YBNL Nation, Olamide has signed several major endorsement deals with drink companies, in addition to other investments and assets, making him one of the wealthiest musicians in the country. After finding national success with 2013's Baddest Guy Ever Liveth and 2015's Eyan Mayweather, he began releasing music in America through Empire Distribution. His first widespread release was 2020's Carpe Diem, followed by 2021's UY Scuti. The EP Ikigai appeared in 2024.

Olamide Adedeji was born in Bariga, Lagos State in 1989. He decided to become a musician in 2000, and he started his career a decade later, signing to Coded Tunes and releasing the single "Eni Duro" in 2010. The song became a hit, and Olamide performed at the Hip Hop World Awards (later renamed the Headies) in 2010. His debut album, Rapsodi, was released in 2011, featuring guest appearances by Wizkid, Pheelz, 9ice, and other Nigerian stars.

Olamide left Coded Tunes and founded his own company, YBNL Nation, in 2012. His second album, also called YBNL (short for Yahoo Boy No Laptop), was the label's first release, and it proved to be another success, winning top honors at both the Headies and the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. Third album Baddest Guy Ever Liveth (2013) repeated this feat, in addition to featuring the major hit "Durosoke," which won awards in its own right. Street OT was released in late 2014, winning Olamide another Album of the Year award at the Headies. In 2015, Olamide released 2 Kings, a collaboration with Phyno, as well as his fifth solo effort, Eyan Mayweather, another Album of the Year recipient at the NEAs. Sixth album The Glory appeared in 2016, followed a year later by Lagos Nawa. Numerous non-album singles and freestyles appeared throughout the remainder of the 2010s. Olamide's first major work of the next decade was 2020's Carpe Diem, which also served as his first American release on Empire Distribution. He followed it a year later with another full-length, UY Scuti, before pairing with CKay for 2023's "Trumpet." He was also featured on Asake's "Amapiano," a breakthrough hit which helped introduce the genre of the same name to worldwide listeners. The full-length Unruly was released in 2023, followed by the 2024 EP Ikigai. ~ Paul Simpson

Singer/songwriter Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun (aka Wizkid) is one of Nigeria's biggest R&B crossover acts, having worked with Drake, Skepta, and Chris Brown, among others. He first found regional success in 2011 with the massively popular single "Holla at Your Boy," which appeared on his debut album, Superstar. Wizkid went global in 2016 after his collaboration with Drake, "One Dance," soared to number one in 15 countries, resulting in a multi-album deal with RCA, which issued his Caribbean-influenced major-label debut, Sounds from the Other Side, in 2017. The acclaimed Made in Lagos followed in 2021, featuring the internationally charting hit single "Essence." Just one year later, Wizkid followed up with his fifth album, More Love, Less Ego, and Morayo arrived in 2024.

Balogun began his career in music when he was just 11 years old. His first record, Lil Prinz, was recorded in 2001 in collaboration with Glorious Five, a group consisting of Balogun and his friends from church. In 2006, he started pursuing music full-time, first collaborating with various Nigerian pop acts including OJB Jezreel, Naeto C, and Banky W. By 2011, he was ready to record his debut studio album as a solo artist; Superstar was released by Empire Mates Entertainment (EME for short) to great critical and public acclaim across Africa, propelling Wizkid to stardom in his home country.

After multiple delays and label disagreements, he released his sophomore studio album, Ayo, in 2014. The record featured a multitude of guest appearances, including a spot from Femi Kuti. It also featured Balogun's global breakthrough track "Ojuelegba." Not only did the single cement his status as one of Nigeria's biggest pop acts, it was also picked up and remixed by Drake and Skepta, thrusting Wizkid into the international spotlight. In return, he appeared on Drake's 2016 smash single "One Dance." In March 2017, Wizkid signed a major-label deal with RCA and Sony International, which would release his third LP, Sounds from the Other Side, later that year. A handful of singles appeared in advance of the album, including "Sweet Love" and the Drake-assisted "Come Closer."

In October 2018, Wizkid issued a pair of singles, "Master Groove" and "Fever," to mark Nigeria's Independence Day. The following year, he joined Beyoncé and Saint Jhn for The Lion King: The Gift track "Brown Skin Girl" and released his own single, "Joro." The EP Soundman, Vol.1 was issued by Balogun's Starboy Entertainment imprint in 2019. Following his involvement in the successful protests to scrap Nigeria's controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Wizkid's fourth album, Made in Lagos, arrived in October 2020. Featuring collaborations with H.E.R., Damian Marley, Burna Boy, and several others, the Grammy-nominated set was a critical and commercial success, appearing on numerous year-end album lists and reaching number 15 on the U.K. album charts. The record's fifth single, the Grammy-nominated "Essence" (featuring Tems), became a worldwide hit, reaching number 17 in the U.K. and even becoming the first Nigerian song to chart in the Billboard Hot 100. After the track became a hit, a remix featuring Justin Bieber was released. Wizkid kicked off 2022 with "Bad to Me," the lead single from his fifth album, the P2J-produced More Love, Less Ego. Featuring guests like Ayra Starr, Shenseea, Don Toliver, the album was released in November of that year, earning chart success around Europe and hitting number 59 on the Billboard 200. Morayo appeared in 2024, with guests including Jazmine Sullivan, Asake, and Brent Faiyaz. ~ Liam Martin
