The Satara is a great Biltong Maker with a matt finish lid and base, created with ease of use in mind, robust and reliable, a great machine that will produce amazing biltong every time. Made from 3mm thick impact resistant acrylic with a durable 3mm thick foamex back support panel. The 3mm thick panels are easily assembled via rigid corner beading especially manufactured for ourselves and provides greater strength and support. The use of Aluminium rod supports give this a great feel and look, allowing the 3 rods flexibility to be placed in varied locations along the black angled support giving the freedom to make sure your meat is dried to perfection during the whole hanging process, extra rods can also be purchased and added if required. New design in the Rod holders, Easy Clip on and off for easy cleaning The tidy, compact and modern design of this unique Biltong Maker, creates a modern and chic look, and would look great in any room, including the kitchen, office or even a bedroom. Comes with plastic hanging hooks and a spare lightbulb as well as a bag of spices so everything you need to get started. Has a set of instruction on how to assemble which also includes a recipe. Assembly
It's well packaged and fairly easy to assemble. I wish the base and lid had a snugger fit for carrying the unit without the base or lid detaching so easily. But that is a minor niggle and doesn't affect the operation of the unit. Some might say that makes it easier to disassemble and clean.

Hanging the meat
The aluminium rods can roll about when not laden with meat. This is because they sit on a smooth hanging ledge for ease of repositioning. I wish there was a series of channels in the hanging ledge that could hold the rods in place which would still offer flexible position options whilst securing the rods. Again this is a minor niggle and doesn't affect the operation of the unit.

Drying system
There is a light bulb fixture and fan built into the lid. The light bulb provides some heat to extract moisture and the fan keeps a constant airflow going through the unit. Having these together at the top of the unit is different from other drying methods. Normally the light bulb sits at the bottom of the unit and is shielded from the hanging meat. The purpose of the light bulb in these type of units is to heat the air in the unit. The warm air rises up over the meat and out the top of the unit pulling cold air in from the bottom and repeating the process. A convection current. The fan is there to assist with airflow and can be left out or used on its own. I'm not sure if putting the fan and light bulb together at the top of the unit defeats the purpose of a convection current. The light bulb will be trying to pull air up through the unit whilst the fan is blowing the air down. Or maybe the fan is blowing what little warmth there is from the light bulb into the unit. The fan could also be cooling the bulb in which case it's having no effect at all other than providing light.

Conclusion
Having said that the meat is drying. The unit is well made and looks like it will last a long time. If you're not prepared to make your own unit then this is definitely a good buy.

The box is stylish. My wife approves of the Biltong box which is a major achievement as usually she would be complaining about me buying more things that take up room!

Perhaps it is just me but I found it difficult to assemble the perpex into the clips, and ended up using a meat hammer to bash into place. I have lots of microcuts on my hand from the hour I was trying to slide the perpex into the holder which stung when vinegar got onto my hands whilst curing the meat! I'm also not convinced by the lightbulb at the top of the box rather than the bottom. Other than that it is simple and stylish! So excited

I have just finished my first batch of biltong, and while I messed up the spices it still came out amazing!

There was a question posed to the seller about whether or not the bulb was necessary and they got back to me with a speedy response which left me very happy. This box is intended to be used near continuously, so how it fares over time and under constant use will remain to be seen.
