Can watercolour pencils be used as ordinary colouring pencils?

They are fine to use dry just as you would with colouring pencils. They are soft and blend and layer easily.

I’m doing pyrography, are these pencils suitable for applying colour and can they be used directly onto canvas?

Yes - they are fine to use with pyrography and for using directly onto canvas.

With regards to the selection of pencils, is there any repetition across the 120 watercolour set?

Though some colours sit closely together in spectrum, each colour is unique throughout the 120 watercolour pencil set.

Do they feel soft in use or is there a ‘grittiness’?

Soft and blendable, these watercolour pencils are smooth in application.

What paper is best for using with these pencils?

As well as watercolour paper, high texture cartridge paper works very well. Other mediums such as acrylics, inks, pencils and watercolour paints can be combined also without the surface breaking down.

I find that the leads splinter if you use anything other than a hand sharpener, it does mention not using a machine sharpener on the accompanying literature. I have several sets of castle art pencils and although I had good Japanese watercolour pencils I decided to treat myself as they were reduced and then had 40% off. These are good, some better than others though. The richer the pencils are (darker colours especially) the more luscious they become, but what I do like most is that with some watercolour pencils you can see the draw lines don’t blend properly and these blend perfectly and also you don’t have to add water immediately. You can draw and colour a section at a time. Highly recommended.
