Product description

Recorded at Rockfield and Olympic studios in September and October 1972, the legendary album followed on the success of the band's hit single 'Silver Machine' and was their first to feature Lemmy Kilmister on bass and vocals and Simon King on drums. Featuring such classic tracks as 'Brainstorm', 'Space is Deep', 'Lord of Light', 'Down Through the Night' and 'Time We Left This World Today', the album reached the UK Top 20 upon its release in November 1972. This new edition set comprises 2CDs featuring a new remaster of the original album, along with superb new stereo mixes by Stephen W Tayler, including three session outtakes and new mixes of the single tracks 'Urban Guerrilla' and 'Brainbox Pollution'. The release also has an illustrated booklet with new essay.

Doremi 2024 Remix

Doremi 2024 Remix
Another box set remix, this time of the band's third album from 1972. Again, overpriced but you do get five discs this time around. Three cd's in the usual card package and two blue rays in separate card sleeves like the Space ritual set. Disappointingly the saga of Doremi blurb that was on the back of the original album is no longer there but is inside the booklet. You do get a reproduction of the Star Rats poster, though a little smaller this around. The actual album is superb, in my opinion the band's best, and the remix is a revelation. I wouldn't have thought it possible to clear up the muddy sound of the original but here we are. Amazingly some unheard vocals have been unearthed during Brainstorm where they have been buried in the mix for fifty odd years. We now get to hear some Nik Turner spoken words that I never knew were there. The bass is clearer, the vocals are clearer, all is as you would expect from hearing the previous set. The trouble is that the muddy, nihilistic soup of noise that was the original mix of Brainstorm was what made it work for me so I am going to need some time to adjust to this new, clearer mix. But the original is included for those of us who love it, so all is right. This new mix kicks off with a small electronic instrumental intro before the main Brainstorm riff kicks off, I like it but love the blunt opening of the original more. For me this album is the ultimate Hawkwind experience and has now been cleaned up for the 21st century,

I have always liked this album. All of Hawkwind's UA albums have been hardy perennials but this one gets a real knockout treatment. It sounds cleaner and brighter and plays with a new sense of urgency. I can't speak highly enough of Steven Tyler's work on this album. Hawkwind fans will appreciate what I'm trying to get across.
I'm listening to Doremi for the first time again.

One of Hawkwind's best album now given the 'deluxe' treatment.So....

Disc1 the original album plus bonus tracks remastered, certaily to my mind its a clearer remaster than that from 1996,Lemmy and Simon King's rythmn section brought to the fore and showing how powerful they were, sounds like an oxy-moron but ,for me, the remaster despite being clearer has still managed to keep the original primitive ,raw sound ,we have known and loved for 50 plus years.

Disc 2 'The remix'.. WOW what a sound, the remix is absolutely stunning ,its like listening to a different set of 'takes',perfection, listen with the headphones om. a real 'trip'.

So its the best of both world for me the original retained on disc 1and a new experience on disc 2.

Disc 3, the Greasy truckers performance, well i had actually never heard this in full, so that a bonus for me,excellent stuff.

So why only 4 stars, well the price is way to high and at that price, small things irritate such as the packaging, yes the hard back case is nice but the 2 blue rays ( which i dont have the equipment to watch on as yet) shouldnt be loose, they should have had a place in the other cd holder. That plus the book is pretty bland, not much reading and i didnt really need multiple pictures of tape boxes.

Too be honest,if it wasnt for the fact that i didnt have the Greasy Truckers material,i would have bought the 2 disc, much cheaper version. If you dont need everything thats the one to go for.

Before re-mastering this was the defining album of Hawkwind from this period, this version is better still and well worth buying even if you own a CD of the core album. The icing on the cake is the great price!

For those that know the album, the extras are the first attraction - Urban Guerrilla is really clean and blends Turner, Lemmy and Brock behind Calvert splendidly; Brainbox Pollution is better than the perfectly fine rocking version performed around 2001 for its use of synth and Turner's jazz inspired sax; Lords of Light single version adds little and Ejection is yet another studio version for which it would be interesting to compare the line-up to that on Calvert's sole album.

For the core album, here is my take:

Structural (ignoring One Change) this is a collection of alternately pounding rock / more acoustic pieces.

The opener Brainstorm is clearly Nik Turner's most important piece and has everything here including the original tail-piece expanded in Space Ritual and dropped since. In terms of the re-mastering the sound is muddy and this is probably the least improved piece, I assume the master tapes / engineer prohibit doing better.

We cut to Space is Deep which has the most fantastic guitar work (often overlooked in Hawkwind) reminding me of water drops falling from icicles onto a frozen pond. The re-mastering leaves this really crystal clear. I also like the build at the end that brings the whole band in.

I will skip Once Change an odd and very short piece of keyboard / synth

Lord of Light is powerful and weird and works well in this mix (and I think the extra track is no better).

Down Through the Night is another melodic piece with some haunting lyrics and great playing.

Time we Left this World Today is a pounding rock masterpiece with hypnotic repeating lyrics and here the re-mastering of the bass / drums works very well and bears turning up to 11.

The Core album ends with Lemmy's haunting The Watcher which again has some lovely guitar.

Overall you wish that they had found a way to produce at least one more Studio Album at this time with the extras and maybe Orgone Accumulator / Seven by Seven added in. Ah well in a parallel universe maybe!

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome To the Future. (Includes 12 page booklet)

If you're here you already know.

Amazing heavy psych rock, with whirling synth landscapes, acoustic drones. blarring loud riffs, thunderous bass, and frantic drumming. Some would call this proto-metal. I call it Hawkwind. Nothing comes close..
While there is some criticism on the original mix of the album, I think the remaster does a great job of correcting the EQ discrepancies.
It's a solid pick for any hawkwind fan or something who wants to hear something new. If you're into 60-70s underground rock this is a no brainer.

truly one of the greatest bands of all time, right up there with black sabbath, pink floyd and king crimson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vergessener Klassiker!
Reviewed in Germany on 4 October 2009
