I was concerned that a non-functioning immersion heater would be extremely difficult to remove but this is the ideal tool for the job. I was able to use it with a hammer to release, what I believed would be, a stubborn joint with no trouble at all. Every Plumber should have one in his kit-bag.

Amateur DIY-er here.. the box spanner didn't work for me. Too much flex on the bar when knocking it with the hammer.. spent ages trying to hit it increasingly harder worrying that I was going to break something.

Having this cast iron one-piece tool had the immersion heater come off with a few taps. This isn't much more than the box spanner, and currently at £10-ish which is a whole lot cheaper than I could find the more well-recognised Monument-branded version.

The fact that it is a bit bigger than the heater was a non-issue. (WAY better than it being a bit too small!) You could always try and fill the gap with a coin or something solid if it looked prone to slipping

Very solid - much better than the pressed steel ones. Only problems are (1) it's quite heavy and (2) the A/F size of the spanner is a bit larger than the immersion heater nut so it's quite loose. I did wonder if you had a really stuck in immersion heater whether the spanner could slip given that the spanner is likely to be used on immersion heaters that are really tight. (Sometimes people use glue or whatever to stop them leaking but then they are really difficult to get out).

I hate to give a 1-star rating, but what option is there if the item delivered is just the wrong size. It is advertised as being a black, 86 mm (A.F.) ring spanner. The picture in the ad. shows a red tool, so I wasn't alarmed when it arrived. A few days later, when I tried to unscrew my failed immersion heater, the spanner just rotated around the heater head. I reached for my vernier caliper to verify the heater head size, and that was just under 86 mm A.F. I then checked the spanner, and that was 90 mm A.F.
I suspect that a new delivery of wrongly- labelled spanners has arrived at the seller, and the goods-in inspector didn't check the size, just looked at the label, and accepted that as the truth, even though the colour was wrong. Whoops!
