- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 August 2024Best thing Edward Woodward did after starring in Callan.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 September 2018This was edited in May 2019 to correct a small detail.
I'll start with the good. The entire show is here, all in very good quality (as good as the old tapes could provide...... expect occasional small hiccup). Both picture and sound quality is as good as possible. Being the UK release, NO ORIGINAL MUSIC IS CUT, which is half the reason I got this one (the other being higher resolution). The bonus material is a neat inclusion, considering they did not have to film any of it. Original pilot version is also included.
Unfortunately, the release is not perfect. Firstly, the first season. Fabulous Films, gods bless their souls, in their infinite brilliance decided to just copy+paste the work done by Universal Playback, from when THEY released season 1. Unfortunately, that means that the picture is interlaced by default. They could have done some digital magic, and restored the original progressive frames (the original old source WAS progressive after all, they filmed on FILM). Now, it is still possible to get the progressive image, IF your player knows how to combine every 2 fields. Sadly, VLC (as of 2018) still does not have a proper reverse telecine option for PAL. And that is how I watch the show. Other filters can do an almost perfect job, but still........ Fabulous, you missed the chance to do a perfect job. 2019 EDIT: looks like episode 2 of season 2 (on the same disk as episode 1, obviously) is presented as interlaced, while the prior episode is progressive. My educated guess is someone somewhere messed up with the flags (the tiny pieces of data before each "chapter" in a MPEG-2 video stream which tell the player if the footage is to be played "as is", or apply interlacing). That means if your player of choice can ignore flags and play the supposed progressive footage on the disk, you are golden.
The bonus 40 minute video also combines progressive 576 25p and 576 50i footages, which is something they could have fixed (in the end, it is up to you to do their job). An earlier (shot while the show was still on TV I believe) promo video including an interview with Stewart Copeland is NOT included. Perhaps they could not find it, forgot it existed, or could not get the rights. Still, it sucks.
All in all, a VERY complete set with small flaws, but at least those are flaws you can fix yourself.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 March 2024This show holds up really well.
New York in the mid 1980s. Spies, criminals, people in distress. And Edward Woodward.
I couldn't get the theme music out of my head, so I decided to splurge on the boxset.
Very well worth it!
The performances hold up better than most TV shows of the period, with plenty of tension and drama, and the soundtrack is a real treat too. My missus, who didn't know the show at all, loves it too.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 March 2024Absolutely loved re-watching these and brought back so many memories.
Any fan of Robert McCall should own these.
Great - Thanks
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 July 2022The only way this isn't 5 stars is Series 1 and 2 looked like they'd been used ever so slightly. One or two tiny scratch like markings that won't interfere with playback. Finger prints on the occasional disc. And one or two smear markings. Yes this can mostly be cleaned up. But the box set is supposed to be NEW for goodness sake. And it was sealed when it arrived. So it must be a case of poor packing of the discs from the distributor.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 June 2023I've LOVED The Equalizer, ever since I was little & I'm loving having the box set, so I can watch it again... Just as great now, as it was when I was little. I loved Edward Woodward when I was little (especially saying his name lol) and still love him now.
This is a box set I will treasure.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 February 2024Good series
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 January 2016What else is better for a Sunday afternoon or late evenings than a cult classic series? Being a young child of the 80's I never fully got to watch the series when aired and by the time the age was right, repeats were few and far between (unlike Mash and a few others which seem to get constant hammering), first series was purchased separately but then there seemed to be a drop in releases for further seasons until they club them together for this release, which is brilliant! Is it a bit weak, hammy and sometime laughable compared to newer series (and it's feature film), well yes but it's Edward Woodward at his best kicking butt, need I say more?
I hope this review helped you. If so, I would appreciate it if you clicked on the Yes button for a helpful review. If you have any questions, please ask. I am pretty responsive to comments
