Biologically active vitamin D3 form

Vitamin D exists in two forms: ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) and cholecalciferol (vitamin D3). Vitamin D3 is the form naturally produced in the body and the most biologically active form, which is better absorbed and utilised by the body.

Many vitamin D supplements provide vitamin D2, but the more potent supplement form cholecalciferol (D3) is up to 3 times as active as the synthetic ergocalciferol (D2). We source our vitamin D3 from lanolin, derived from sheep’s wool.

Optimal daily dose

As a fat-soluble vitamin, the body can struggle to expel vitamin D if taken in high amounts for too long. Due to its role in regulating our blood calcium levels, supplementing with high doses can lead to high levels of calcium in the blood, also known as hypercalcaemia which can lead to fatigue, weakness, sleepiness and headaches.

Bone density

Vitamin D3 is best known for its role in supporting healthy bones and teeth, which it does by improving the body’s ability to absorb and use calcium and phosphorus, which in turn supports normal blood calcium levels. When the balance of vitamin D and calcium is no longer optimal, there is an increased risk for reduced bone density.

Muscle function

Vitamin D could impact muscle mass by supporting healthy cell division allowing muscle tissue to build.
