I'm a full time professional wedding photographer with over 20 years experience so have used plenty of flashes over the years however this is my first ring flash. I have been using the AD 200 since just after its launch, its a been a powerful and reliable (despite it getting dropped, wet and generally abused) flash unit so when the Ring flash ad on came out it was a no brainer really.
To begin with you will need to update the AD200 to the latest firmware (this was a little fiddly via the Godox website but maybe that's just my tech skills). The flash came with a sturdy mounting plate with plenty of adjustability to suit all the lenses I have for my Nikon Z6ii including those with large front elements like the 24-70mm F2.8. Be sure not to mount the flash too far back or it will hamper access to the zoom/focus rings on your lens. To connect the ring flash to the AD200 you remove the head from the flash united clip in the connector at the end of the lead to the ring flash. The kit came with a handy shoulder sling bag to put the AD200 in, the unit fit snugly and still gives access to the controls at the top of the unit, in this setup you are now completely mobile with the ring flash. It is a little heavy so wouldn't recommend for long periods, one thing to think about is the cable between the flash and the AD200 is very long so if walking around it needs to be coiled in some way. Of course this can all be set-up on a light stand or studio setting in which case the long lead would prove to be very helpful. The flash can be controlled and triggered using the standard good trigger that I used in the past for my AD200 and V1 in exactly the same way. Those with experience of the AD200 know its battery life seems to be limitless and connected to the Ring flash it is just the same, recycle rates are fast, I had no issues with heat buildup, the power for dance floor portraits never needed to be higher than a third and despite using all evening at one wedding battery levels barely shifted. The image results are exactly as expected from a ring flash, if the subject is close to a background you get that typical double shadow effect and the round catchlights in the eyes which looks great. When using on the dance floor I got really vibrant evenly lit pics. So far I've only used the flash for Macro work just once on high key pack shots, again the flash worked perfectly with nice even results.
In summary if you already have the AD200 this really is a no brainer add-on to the system, ring flash creates a very unique look on pictures and this unit is a solid, powerful way of getting ring flash without having to buy a standalone unit, beware a cheap ring of LED's like the makeup artists use is just no substitute for a proper flash unit. Stop reading and just buy it already!!!
