Product description
So shocking that, to this day, the British censors insist on culling some of the film s use of live animal 'performers' THE MAN FROM DEEP RIVER instigated the entire Italian cannibal movie trend. Indeed, long before CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST attempted its own blend of bloodshed and authority-upsetting horror, THE MAN FROM DEEP RIVER was carving out an influential and important path of its own. Directed by Umberto Lenzi, who later oversaw the arterial-gushing gore of CANNIBAL FEROX and EATEN ALIVE, THE MAN FROM DEEP RIVER introduces us to a British expat (essayed by genre veteran Ivan Rassimov) who gets into some bar-brawling trouble in Bangkok and flees to the Burmese border. Unfortunately, once there, he is captured by a primitive tribe who do not take too kindly to trespassers. On the plus side, though, at least he has the lovely tribal babe Me Me Lai (LAST CANNIBAL WORLD) to keep him company... but will their 'forbidden' love meet with further flesh-filleting fear?
Filled with sicko-splatter sequences of torture and terror THE MAN FROM DEEP RIVER was an original UK Video Nasty and it returns to British shelves, in sanguine-splashed HD, for a very special 88 Films edition!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 March 2017Title: MAN FROM DEEP RIVER (1972)
Label: 88 FILMS
Tranfer by: Italy ?
Aspect Ratio: 2.35 : 1
88 FILMS released MAN FROM DEEP RIVER as an impressive BD set with lots of interesting supplement material. You are a film buff? You shouldnt miss the feature length documentary about modo and cannibal films from Italy. Great value here even if you dont like the movie it is worth buying this BD set. Actual MAN FROM DEEP RIVER is an adaption of the movie A MAN CALLED HORSE (1970). For me it is a pleasant fact, that the main character passes through an evolution. Very unusual for italian sleaze and trash stuff out of that period. Lets dare revisit the movie or perhaps I can encourage you to watch this movie for the first time. It is an interesting genre contribution which arised out of the mondo movie swamp and its success triggered a sheer endless wave of cannibal stuff flicks. The technical aspect is high-grade. Great picture and color compositions. What I like is the little ambivalence occurred by the relatively artificial appearance of colors (Eastmancolors) and the primary focus on naturalism of the movie. On one side you are pleased with all the eye-candy and on the other side you will get displeasing feelings due to the downbeating story elements. Very interesting.
No Grain Baby, No Gain / The Transfer(s):
For this transfer the original camera negative was used as source material and the visual result of the high quality (2K ?) scan is breathtakingly beautiful, especially via HD projection. The grain structure is completely intact and very fine by what it appeals so filmic. The picture kept its texture and therefore the level of detail is amazing. The colors are simply wonderful. A real joy to watch. Blacklevels are very strong and constant throughout the whole presentation. Contrasts are great. I spotted no DNR and no sharpening filters, edge enhancement, blocky noise and such digital monstrosities. All in all it looks very filmic and very good in motion. Well done (Italy?)!
Cut and Run:
The scanned source material is integral. NO inserts from different sources have been applied. I find this to be so damn important for a perfect filmic enjoyment.
BUT:
MAN FROM DEEP RIVER is heavily cut in the UK Version. Over three minutes of missing scenes which didnt make it past the BBFC (british board of film classification). Go check their webpage before buying UK BD sets. Their service here is absolutely positively exemplary! I strongly wish we had such consumer elucidation for film interested people (and Parents) in Germany. All segments containing violence against animals (and animals against animals) has been removed.
Alternative Version Integrale:
BD set SACRIFICE from the US. It contains the same transfer and the superb feature length documentary mentioned above and includes a nice booklet.
Critical Thoughts about Censorship:
I am studying moviemaking and movie analysis in private for countless years now. I really dont like censorship when it comes to the arts. (Cinematic) Movies = artificially constructed products = art. The animal cruelty shown in MAN FROM DEEP RIVER have been done and no matter what someone does nowadays (censorship) they cant be undone. Yes it is a shame people do such things to living beings just for the joy, money (greed) or whatsoever motivations. And it is embarrassing that filmmakers use such elements disguising them under the signs of "authentic" and declaring them as documental important. In fact they implement them for targeting at the sensational lust of their potential audience. In other words for more cash in. Pitiful but also self-uncovering.
And exactly this should be the reason the respective segments shouldnt be censored because it is about the people to decide, develop opinions and discuss such subjects after watching. Those kind of movies are not produced any more. There are exceptions like GREEN INFERNO and some more but these flicks do not have scenes of real animal torture in it. Meanwhile doing so filmmakers go about chargeable. In my opinion, by taking those scenes out, you harm the filmhistorical background. Because the intact versions of such 70th and early 80th flicks reflect a lot of social quality during that time. There was an audience for such movies and therefore producers in Europe, especially in Germany virtually demanded such films from italian crews. All this striking facts should not be diluted by holding back the visual truth.
Final Thoughts:
Fans, collectors and people with bigscreens or projectors can spent their money without any further doubts while they can live with the heavy cuts that have been made in the UK version. But beside the movie itself, 88Films made a great collectors set regarding the supreme extra supplements. Conditionally Recommended.
Statement:
My ratings refer exclusively to technical aspects of BD sets. The more filmic / photographic a movie looks and feels via bigscreen projections and the more authentic to its camera negative (or other sources) the movie is scanned and digitally treated afterwards, the higher the ratings will be.
I do not rate movies at all. I just watch them and I think of them as artificial pieces of work where many efforts have been taken (including complex postproduction) to accomplish a vision of whatsoever kind. No movie ever shot has earned a 1 star rating on AMAZON or a 1 point rating on IMDB. Anyway, I could rate them because I have studied in private many publications about making films, their psychological impact, and the subject violence on film. And because I am a hobby photographer for years now I know much about frame compositions, color composition and different styles and so on. I am interested in the arts in general. I am also a hobby musician and sound designer with a little studio. So I even could rate the filmical scores. But hell...why should I? Things are what they are and nothing more or less. I like to think beyond mind constructed terms like good and bad. So called "objectivity" becomes fast diluted by personal preferences which results in comments of personal taste. And that should not be the base for a rating-scale which claims to be universal. When it comes to technical aspects thats a different kind of thing. DNR, edge enhancement or block noise and such things are obvious on big screens and we can speak of objectivity and measurability.
All about Ev(m)e:
I am a collector of films for about 27 Years, own about 3.000 films (would be far more, but I often sort out transfers I dont like) and watch them in a home-cinema room via bigscreen projection. I am also a hobby musician and photographer with some experience scanning camera negatives in high definitions. I am fascinated by films from reels since I am a kid and spent hours for hours in cinemas and visiting film festivals.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 September 2018Purchased for the documentary about Me Me Lai, the film itself is not that good but the aforementioned documentary is.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 October 2019This item is listed on Ebay as the uncut version, claiming that it runs to 93 minutes, another claim made on ÍøÆغÚÁÏ. However it only runs to 90 minutes and 3 minutes are missing from this UK Blu Ray edition. The only cuts made are to the animal cruelty scenes. The film overall could have been better, the dubbing was bad, and the violence tame by today's standards. It really shows its age 47 years on, and I don't understand why some people have given this film 4 or 5 stars out of 5 when it deserves 3 or less. Director Umberto Lenzi's other cannibal film Eaten Alive! from 1980 was much better.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 May 2016The colors are great, but you can see some typical "italian scanner noise". You know, the stuff which is like a layer above the picture. Not speaking of the film grain, that is unfortunately almost non existent. Looks like DNR mixed with sharpness (watch the titles and you will see what i mean) and above all that strange "Italian scanner noise". The movie itself is (almost) cut with the animal cruelty. For me it's ok but i can understand others who want to see a picture in it's uncensored version.
The extras are great. Calum Waddell again did a great job with a lot of research. ÍøÆغÚÁÏ should update the extras description, because there is a lot more to see (and hear) beside the booklet. And those extras leave me to give 4 stars for that Blu-Ray altogether.
Movie: better than i expected, i think it's a really good movie.
Picture: Well, could be better without that scanning noise and DNR... it's not unwatchable bad, it's a kind of ok.
Extras: Great stuff (a docu about Me Me Lai, an interview with Lenzi, an interview with Eli Roth and an audio commentary with Calum Waddell. Also a nice booklet with an interview with Me Me Lai. The announced Q&A is part of the Me Me Lai documentary)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 September 2016a good release from 88 films.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 June 2018If you want to watch animals suffering or being killed for entertainment look no further. Newly remastered so you can see it’s real. So really if you enjoy this sick era of film that really has nothing else going for it watch it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 October 2015Not really a review but just a response to the ridiculous rants by Duro that appear on here, should actually wait until a product is released and all details are known before launching another anti 88 Films tirade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable movie
One of the better films of this genra. It has a nice, believable story line, stars Ivan Rassimov, a heartthrob, who unfortunately died after just a few films and the stunningly beautiful Me Me Lai. What else can be said? You'll enjoy it if you like this type of movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I'm not a fish! I'm a man!" says The Man.From the Deep River. The locals say prove it.
The 2 words every horror fan dreams of "uncut" and "uncensored".The dvd lived up to its reputation.
