Can I machine wash my jacket?

Most waterproof breathable jackets are machine washable but always read the care label first. Nikwax supports the use of machine washing with its wash in products to provide fast, effective and even application.

How often do I need to treat a garment or item of gear with Nikwax Proofing Products?

For light use, reproof once a year and for heavier use, reproof 2-3 times a year. If your item is wetting out, you may need to reproof more frequently.

What are the advantages to using Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In instead of TX.Direct Spray-On?

Using TX.Direct Wash-in means the clothing will be evenly coated and the proofer will reach hard to get to places. Using Spray-on can be useful as you can target specific areas of the jacket that need waterproofing anytime, anywhere.

I've used this on goretex motorcycle clothing and I'm impressed with its performance. I treated my jacket and trousers 2 months ago and have been through a lot of serious rain while wearing my biker gear since. There was only 1 day it let in a little rain on 1 arm, which was a particularly bad, flooded day where I was riding for a good hour and a half. The rain was battering down. I've since been on other very heavy rain days for maybe 40 minutes each time, where road spray is absolutely drenching me, but once I get home and pull my gear off, I'm dry underneath. Genuinely impressed, as I would normally have multiple wet areas with the same clothing untreated. Being on a bike in the rain with a cars road spray covering me is a serious test for this product.

What worked for me:
I did a quick rinse and spin to clean the washing machine.
I put 1 item of clothing in with the quoted 100ml of Tech Wash. I put it on a 30 minute wash with a slow 600 speed spin at 30c.
Afterwards, while that item is still damp, I added 100ml of TX Direct. I put it on the same 30 minute wash with a slow 600 speed spin at 30c.
I let it dry naturally.

This worked for me and I'll be buying it & when it finally needs reproofing.

I would rather buy these in a larger size but struggled to find them. You don't get many washes from this 300ml size bottle

The Tech Wash
The wash is quick and easy to use, but I found it didn't give very good cleaning results on the jackets. The cuffs and hoods had light marks and a little mud, but these didn't come out after washing which is disappointing. The instructions say to wash on a synthetic cycle, presumably to protect the clothes but the cleaning results were not good enough. Next time I would preswash with my normal detergent on a gentle cycle before using Nikwax.

TX Direct
The wash-in waterproofer is easy to use, although a bit messy afterwards as you have to use a slow spin setting. Which means the jackets are very wet and dripping when they come out of the washing machine. They need to be hung somewhere to drip dry overnight at least. The waterproofer works well. It replenished the jackets waterproof ability, like it was new.

If I could give these separate ratings, I would rate the wash-in at two stars, simply because it didn't actually wash very well. I would rate the waterproofer at four stars as although it works well, this size bottle is not good value for money. I don't feel they are good value compared to the larger size Nikwax bottles.
