I'd never seen Star Wars growing up - much to many people's amazement - and got to a point where I thought "What's all the fuss about?" So I purchased the box set of the original and prequel trilogies and still wondered what the full was all about! Nothing wrong with the items as products, but the films are so overhyped. Perhaps I'd feel differently has I watched them as a child but there's no nostalgia here for me and I find the pop culture of the franchise more interesting than the actual films.

Great Value DVD of the Original Star Wars Trilogy
This DVD box set was the first Star Wars physical media I bought and we still treasure it and take it on holidays as part of our viewing library when there generally isn't a Blu Ray player in the self catering accommodation or hotel. The packaging is delightful and the DVDs are well presented in robust cases with inserts listing all the chapters. The documentaries in the bonus material are a pleasing addition.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 July 2024Bought these for our daughter's birthday as she has become very interested in all the characters and named them all as they came on screen. She loved watching them and i loved re-watching them after many years of seeing them in the cinema. Lovely story behind the story too.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 July 2024This boxset was a real bargain for the price it cost. There was no alternative for this product, I was happy to order, the supplier was fine however the package was not delivered.Thankyou
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 September 2011Well, as an 80's child it goes without saying the original Star Wars trioligy rates highly in my all time fave films...
Which is why i purchased this new edition as i was itching to find out if they had further improved on the previous dvd release. I feel like im in a minority when i say i actualy prefer the special editions of these films, most of the new cgi fits in seemlessly apart from the infamous Han Solo treading on Jabas tail debarkle..
First the good news..
The picture is crisp and clear, especialy facial close ups and the detail you can now see inside the falcon etc is truly amazing considering these films are 3 decades old!
The sound is pin sharp and if you are lucky enough to listen through a home theater system every gun shot and light saber swoosh will sound like its in the room with you...
If you need to foward or rewind during the movies you get a handy scene by scene marker which pops up so you can jump to the exact place you want..
Now the bad stuff..
The actual case cover is shockingly bad, very plain and cheap looking, i would have liked to see a metalic case or a black moulded case in the shape of Darths iconic mask.
Although the picture quality is amazing you have to remember just how old they are so will never look truly faultless.. If you already own the last dvd release of the trioligy i wouldnt rush out to buy the blu ray copies just yet as the old dvd versions do still look superb compared to other movies of a similar age..
So thats about it really..
The bottom line is, if you dont own these movies on dvd.. I would run, not walk to your local store and get the blu ray versions!
If you do already have the dvd copies, and there cant be anyone in the galaxy who hasnt! I would maybe put this release on your xmas prez wish list or rent them from your video store and who knows.. In another 20 years time i may be writting a review about the 3d hologram re-issue!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 March 2016Just to clarify, this review concerns the DVD set released in 2008, with the picture on the front cover showing Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader duelling with lightsabres in front of a blue background.
My favourite version of the originally Star Wars Trilogy came in the form of the THX Digitally Mastered, Widescreen VHS silver-boxed set from 1995. I still own them but thanks to a very helpful review by Josh N, titled Be Aware!!, I was made aware of this set. Now, at last, I can watch the versions I have always preferred, on DVD.
I hadn't seen these versions for around fifteen years and I was so happy to see them again. Yes, they are taken from the 1994 Laser Disk release but I don't care because so were my VHS versions. I don't care that some of the scenes are still grainy and rather dull, having been deprived of the love and attention they deserve after all these years, but they were in my VHS versions as well. Despite that, the rest of the scenes are clean and clear and the sound is perfectly acceptable to me.
Now, I do understand that if you own a large HD TV with surround sound you will most likely feel that these versions come up short. But if all you want are the original, untampered versions, without any of the scene-spoiling, obviously stuck on effects, silly noises, inappropriate music, CG Muppets and added scenes that don’t make a great deal of sense to the plot, then like me, you’ll probably be pretty happy with this set.
Could they do better? Most likely, yes. Will they? I don’t care anymore, because I have this now.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention that the recent versions are included on separate DVDs in this set. But I didn’t buy it for those. Still, they’re there if you want them.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 September 2011well here we have at long last the "original" but not so original star wars films on blu ray.right well the 5 stars are for the picture and sound as its really really good looks like it was filmed yesterday in 1977 style.BUT ITS NO STARS FOR THE FILMS.why oh why has george lucas had to tinker with the films yet again!!!! cgi and some re edits for dialogue.ok i agree in this day and age cgi looks awesome in films that it was made for but not try and add stuff to films,ie jabba the hut and moss islay in star wars a new hope, the city in the sky and other added bits in the empire strikes back, and as for return of the jedi!!!!why the added added dialouge when darth vader throws the emporer down the pit ???????noooooooooooooooooooooo way should have that been added just totally ruins the whole film.i have the original star wars films on vhs and there a dam site better then this tripe.and why did george lucas not put the originals on the blu ray disks as well?? or is this going to be yet another money spinner for them to be re released on blu ray at a later date??lucas needs to sit up and listen to the fan base of the original films as we are the ones who made him rich.
he needs to take a look at the alien box set to see how things should be done, the original films, and the directors cuts all there on the box set, plus hours and hours of extras.if your a die hard star wars fan buy thid but if not avoid this box set at all costs!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the way they were on screen at the beginning...
The *original* original trilogy. You know, where Han shot first.
And when *all* the effects were practical. Not bad, even today.
A bit of a treasure, for the serious fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Facciamoci un giro sul Millennium Falcon!

4.0 out of 5 stars Buena compra por el precio.
