I bought a 3 man tent from Go Outdoors. It has 3 poles so it requires a minimum of 10 pegs - 2 for each pole and 2 at the front and 2 at the back. It also requires another 6 pegs for the ropes to keep it taut. I just bought one pack of 10 to hold down the main tent and used the stock pegs for the ropes.

The tent pegs that came with my tent were rubbish - - really thing and bendable. Particularly hard to get them into the ground with your hands or a mallet.

These are pretty sold. They are easy to push into soft ground by hand (and importantly) really easy to get out by hand. Because they are T shaped it allows you to knock them in straight down or at an angle to really ensure they tent is held down.

I have given 4 stars because I managed to very slightly bend one when I tried to stamp it in on hard ground but to be honest I don't think that would have happened if I had done it properly with a mallet.

Each peg comes with a plastic cap and they come in a small plastic bag for storage.

Overall I would recommend if you have rubbish tent pegs that came with your tent. They make putting the tent in and taking it down easier and will help in severe weather.

There is no chance of the tent blowing away if these are holding it down and you have them at the right angle - I'd say the tent is more likely to fail (unless the ground is so soft the whole tent is sucked out!)
