Smooth Sound for My Turntable

My old amplifier didn’t have a phono input, so I needed something to bridge the gap between my turntable and speakers. This little device works perfectly for that.

Setting it up was easy—just connect the turntable to the RCA input, plug the output into the amp, and you’re ready to go. I like that it comes with a power adapter, so there’s no hunting around for extras.

The very day I got it, I played a favorite jazz album that used to sound flat without proper amplification. With this preamp, the sound is much fuller and the details are clearer. There’s very little background noise, which is a bonus when listening to quieter tracks.

The compact size is also a plus, as it fits neatly into my setup without taking up much space. The power switch is handy too, letting me turn it off when it’s not in use.

If you’re looking for an affordable way to enhance your record player’s sound, this preamp is worth considering. It’s reliable, easy to use, and has made my vinyl collection sound much better.

I really like the build quality of this and it has a nice weight to it with grippy rubber feet to keep it from moving about. When grounded out I get zero feedback hum and the sound quality is pretty much as good as I will ever need and highly doubt I would notice the difference between this and a higher end pre-amp. The only downside I can see on this is the price. At £23.99 (cost at time of review) it is a bit pricey when compared to other well know name-brand options. That being said there is MANY other cheaper looking pre-amps that sell for even more, so perhaps it isn't too over-priced.

I have some old Technics which have been collecting dust for a while so grabbing this preamp and linking it into my Sonos was a treat this Xmas.

Given its branding and price, I wasn't holding out for studio-quality stuff, but I was pleasantly surprised with how well it worked and the sound quality.

There aren't any bells and whistles with this—just the basics, and it does exactly as needed.

For the price, this is a great bit of kit to have so you can crack out the old vinyl collection.

Having just picked up a Black Friday Turntable I was disappointed with the inbuilt pre-amp and, for what the thing cost, was in two minds as to whether to return it or not, it looks really good but sounds really blah!
By chance this popped up in my Vine feed whilst I was dithering so I thought I may as well give it a try.

I am now keeping the turntable, this improves it by leaps and bounds, sure it isn't high end by any means, but it makes the output far more palatable to my ear.

- *** Does what it should but there may be better alternatives
- ** Problems or issues encountered that outweigh any benefits.
- * Run for the door!

I only order Items that I or my family have a genuine use for and as such you can be sure that they are tested in real world warts and all situations.

I don't normally like switches on these but i do like this. The sound quality is above average and the power switch is a nice touch. It doesn't seem to effect things noticably in use.
Great for a lot of different things. Being 12v it can even be used in a car etc. Plenty of uses for this. Its a shame its a set gain with no controls other than the switch but its good enough for most. I can't really fault this. It's a little expensive for what it is at £24 but still not bank breaking territory.

Il preamplificatore phono è uno strumento essenziale, imprescindibile, immancabile in ogni impianto stereo in cui sia incluso anche un giradischi. Talvolta non lo si vede, in quanto integrato nell'amplificatore o nello stesso giradischi, ma è comunque un componente fondamentale.

Il pre-phono ha due importanti compiti:
- aumentare il livello del segnale generato dalla puntina del giradischi, innanzandone il voltaggio e rendendolo quindi pienamente utilizzabile da un qualunque amplificatore, ma anche dalle cuffie.
- applicare l'equalizzazione RIAA inversa per riportare la musica simile all'originale.

NOTA: cos'è l'equalizzazione RIAA 👈👈
- I dischi in vinile hanno dei limiti fisici in termini di incisione della musica. I suoni più bassi richiederebbero solchi più larghi e ampi, con grande occupazione di spazio sul disco, e quindi una minor durata. Per ovviare al problema la RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) ha ideato una curva di equalizzazione in cui vengono attenuate le frequenze basse e al contempo enfatizzate quelle alte, tale musica modificata viene poi incisa sul disco in vinile. Quando la puntina percorre i solchi del disco, il segnale audio generato viene portato al pre-phono, e quindi sottoposto all'equalizzazione RIAA inversa, allo scopo di ottenere un audio il più possibile aderente all'originale.

👉👉👉 Caratteristiche e connessioni 👈👈👈
L'intera elettronica è contenuta in una scatola metallica, con verniciatura nera opaca e leggermente ruvida.
Nella parte inferiore 4 piedini gommati piuttosto ampi, utili per garantirne la stabilità e per evitare di rovinare le superfici con cui entra in contatto.

Nella parte superiore l'interruttore ON/OFF. Permette di accendere e spegnere l'apparecchio senza dover agire sulla spina elettrica. Un led permette di verificare l'effettivo stato di accensione.
L'alimentazione viene fornita da un alimentatore esterno: output 12V 1.0A - 12 watt.

Queste le connessioni:
- presa per l'alimentazione
- input e output su porte RCA, con contatti placcati in oro
- GND, massa, collegando l'apposito cavetto si mette in sicurezza il giradischi e si limitano gli eventuali ronzii di sottofondo

👉👉👉👉👉👉 CONFRONTO CON ALTRI PHONO PREAMP 👈👈👈👈👈👈

Posseggo ben 4 preamplificatori di questa tipologia (guarda foto allegate alla recensione), d'altronde in casa ho 3 giradischi. Tale situazione mi permette di fare dei confronti interessanti.

Tutti hanno un costo intorno ai 30 euro o meno. Sono di produzione cinese. Invero ho acquistato il primo PRE su consiglio di un amico più esperto di me, il quale mi ha detto che per un utilizzo non audiofilo, se non ho insomma un impianto Hi-Fi da svariate migliaia di Euro, questi made in china vanno benissimo.

Tutti hanno un leggero ronzio di fondo avvertibile in assenza di musica. Tale ronzio può dipendere però da vari fattori: il posizionamento, vicinanza ad altri apparati elettrici, troppe giunture e adattatori nella varie connessioni (guarda video allegato alla presente recensione), giradischi non recente con alimentatore interno. Ecco, io ho tutte le condizioni di cui sopra, ma non mi sento di potermi lamentare perché, davvero, una volta che parte la musica il ronzio non si nota più.

Tutti funzionano con le testine MM (Moving Magnet - Magnete Mobile) e non sono invece compatibili con i giradischi dotati delle ben più complesse testine MC (Moving coil, bobina mobile).

👉👉👉 FOSI AUDIO BOX X1
Il mio primo acquisto in tal senso. Un preamplificatore dal prezzo ragionevole e che svolge onestamente il suo compito. Ha un buon suono sull'intero spettro di frequenze. Utile il pulsantino superiore per l'accensione. Non presenta la regolazione del volume. Offre una utilissima (nel mio caso) uscita cuffie. È un po' il mio punto di riferimento, nonché il preamp che uso più spesso. Acquistato qui su ��غ�� per circa una trentina di Euro.

👉👉👉 MOUKEY MPAMP1
Questo è diverso dagli altri anche in termini funzionali. Dispone dei classici ingressi e uscite RCA, nonché una uscita jack 6.35 mm e l'immancabile presa per il cavo di massa. Due manopole per regolare il volume in uscita e quello in ingresso, utili per aggiustare il livello di segnale e limitare eventuali disturbi e ronzii.
L'equalizzazione RIAA è però diversa dagli altri, si ha una maggiore enfasi sulle frequenze basse, il suono appare più avvolgente, morbido; conseguentemente si hanno medi e alti meno dettagliati, non così cristallini e precisi.
È l'unico, tra i 4 pre qui elencati, che viene alimentato da un comune cavo micro-USB da 5 volt.

👉👉👉 MICRO PHONO PP500
Anche questo con due manopole separate per regolare il volume di ingresso e di uscita. Led per controllare lo stato di accensione. Classiche 4 prese RCA, ed una uscita su jack 6.3 mm. Funziona bene e restituisce un audio di buona qualità, ben bilanciato nelle varie frequenze.

👉👉👉 PROZOR
Arrivo finalmente a parlare del preamplificatore phono oggetto di questa recensione. La struttura in metallo appare più grande rispetto agli altri, ed ha anche un peso maggiore.
Utilissimo il pulsante di accensione superiore, peraltro più grande e facilmente accessibile.
La qualità audio è decisamente buona, bassi ben presenti, medi ed alti cristallini con una resa piacevole e dettagliata. Forse è solo una suggestione, ma ho come l'impressione che alcune frequenze e strumenti, si sentano leggermente meglio su questo Prozor rispetto agli altri Pre-Phono. Ripeto, non è una misura strumentale, ma solo una mia impressione. Insomma, si sente davvero bene.

😓 ASPETTI NEGATIVI E MANCANZE 😓

🔸🔸 Porta di uscita Jack
- Il pre phono Prozor non offre una porta di uscita Jack per le cuffie, e ciò può rappresentare un problema in alcune situazioni. Personalmente ho una installazione che prevede casse amplificate da computer, resa audio decente, oserei dire molto buona, ma l'ingresso audio è unicamente mediante jack 3.5 mm. Usando un cavo adattatore a Y ho potuto sfruttare l'uscita RCA. Ma è importante ricordare che ogni connessione/aggiunta in più, nella cavetteria, può introdurre un degrado nel segnale audio. Se invece avete casse acustiche amplificate o un amplificatore con ingresso su spine RCA, allora per voi non è un problema.

🔸🔸 Controlli del volume
- Eh già, non ci sono. Io ho una configurazione in cui la cassa amplificata con la manopola del controllo volume è vicina al preamplificatore phono; pertanto non sento alcun bisogno di operare sul pre-phono per modificare il volume. Ma se volete mettere le casse in una posizione un po' diversa? Magari sopra un'alta mensola, oppure semi nascoste dentro un mobile. O ancora, usate delle cuffie che non offrono il controllo del volume. Ebbene in tali situazioni questa mancanza risulterebbe essere molto problematica.

👉👉👉👉👉 CONCLUSIONI 👈👈👈👈👈

Io lo reputo indubbiamente come un buon prodotto. L'audio che restituisce è di buona qualità, con la capacità di rendere in maniera impeccabile le varie frequenze nello spettro sonoro udibile. Posso dire che funziona, e funziona bene, peraltro viene proposto ad un costo decisamente ragionevole.

Purtroppo le mancanze descritte poco sopra mi costringono a togliere una stella nella valutazione finale. Ma, attenzione, se non rientrate nelle situazioni in cui quelle mancanze sono critiche, allora potete considerarlo tranquillamente un prodotto a 5 stelle, e in tal caso ve lo consiglio senza riserve. Pensate che da quando ho iniziato a provarlo è passato ormai più di un mese e, nonostante abbia altri PRE-phono disponibili, per il momento non ho alcuna intenzione di sostituirlo ☺

Per ovviare al problema la RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) ha ideato una curva di equalizzazione in cui vengono attenuate le frequenze basse e al contempo enfatizzate quelle alte, tale musica modificata viene poi incisa sul disco in vinile. Quando la puntina percorre i solchi del disco, il segnale audio generato viene portato al pre-phono, e quindi sottoposto all'equalizzazione RIAA inversa, allo scopo di ottenere un audio il più possibile aderente all'originale.

L'intera elettronica è contenuta in una scatola metallica, con verniciatura nera opaca e leggermente ruvida.
Nella parte inferiore 4 piedini gommati piuttosto ampi, utili per garantirne la stabilità e per evitare di rovinare le superfici con cui entra in contatto.

Nella parte superiore l'interruttore ON/OFF. Permette di accendere e spegnere l'apparecchio senza dover agire sulla spina elettrica. Un led permette di verificare l'effettivo stato di accensione.
L'alimentazione viene fornita da un alimentatore esterno: output 12V 1.0A - 12 watt.

Queste le connessioni:

- input e output su porte RCA, con contatti placcati in oro
- GND, massa, collegando l'apposito cavetto si mette in sicurezza il giradischi e si limitano gli eventuali ronzii di sottofondo

Posseggo ben 4 preamplificatori di questa tipologia (guarda foto allegate alla recensione), d'altronde in casa ho 3 giradischi. Tale situazione mi permette di fare dei confronti interessanti.

Tutti hanno un costo intorno ai 30 euro o meno. Sono di produzione cinese. Invero ho acquistato il primo PRE su consiglio di un amico più esperto di me, il quale mi ha detto che per un utilizzo non audiofilo, se non ho insomma un impianto Hi-Fi da svariate migliaia di Euro, questi made in china vanno benissimo.

Tutti hanno un leggero ronzio di fondo avvertibile in assenza di musica. Tale ronzio può dipendere però da vari fattori: il posizionamento, vicinanza ad altri apparati elettrici, troppe giunture e adattatori nella varie connessioni (guarda video allegato alla presente recensione), giradischi non recente con alimentatore interno. Ecco, io ho tutte le condizioni di cui sopra, ma non mi sento di potermi lamentare perché, davvero, una volta che parte la musica il ronzio non si nota più.

Tutti funzionano con le testine MM (Moving Magnet - Magnete Mobile) e non sono invece compatibili con i giradischi dotati delle ben più complesse testine MC (Moving coil, bobina mobile).

Il mio primo acquisto in tal senso. Un preamplificatore dal prezzo ragionevole e che svolge onestamente il suo compito. Ha un buon suono sull'intero spettro di frequenze. Utile il pulsantino superiore per l'accensione. Non presenta la regolazione del volume. Offre una utilissima (nel mio caso) uscita cuffie. È un po' il mio punto di riferimento, nonché il preamp che uso più spesso. Acquistato qui su ��غ�� per circa una trentina di Euro.

Questo è diverso dagli altri anche in termini funzionali. Dispone dei classici ingressi e uscite RCA, nonché una uscita jack 6.35 mm e l'immancabile presa per il cavo di massa. Due manopole per regolare il volume in uscita e quello in ingresso, utili per aggiustare il livello di segnale e limitare eventuali disturbi e ronzii.
L'equalizzazione RIAA è però diversa dagli altri, si ha una maggiore enfasi sulle frequenze basse, il suono appare più avvolgente, morbido; conseguentemente si hanno medi e alti meno dettagliati, non così cristallini e precisi.
È l'unico, tra i 4 pre qui elencati, che viene alimentato da un comune cavo micro-USB da 5 volt.

Anche questo con due manopole separate per regolare il volume di ingresso e di uscita. Led per controllare lo stato di accensione. Classiche 4 prese RCA, ed una uscita su jack 6.3 mm. Funziona bene e restituisce un audio di buona qualità, ben bilanciato nelle varie frequenze.

👉👉👉 PROZOR
Arrivo finalmente a parlare del preamplificatore phono oggetto di questa recensione. La struttura in metallo appare più grande rispetto agli altri, ed ha anche un peso maggiore.
Utilissimo il pulsante di accensione superiore, peraltro più grande e facilmente accessibile.
La qualità audio è decisamente buona, bassi ben presenti, medi ed alti cristallini con una resa piacevole e dettagliata. Forse è solo una suggestione, ma ho come l'impressione che alcune frequenze e strumenti, si sentano leggermente meglio su questo Prozor rispetto agli altri Pre-Phono. Ripeto, non è una misura strumentale, ma solo una mia impressione. Insomma, si sente davvero bene.

😓 ASPETTI NEGATIVI E MANCANZE 😓

🔸🔸 Porta di uscita Jack
- Il pre phono Prozor non offre una porta di uscita Jack per le cuffie, e ciò può rappresentare un problema in alcune situazioni. Personalmente ho una installazione che prevede casse amplificate da computer, resa audio decente, oserei dire molto buona, ma l'ingresso audio è unicamente mediante jack 3.5 mm. Usando un cavo adattatore a Y ho potuto sfruttare l'uscita RCA. Ma è importante ricordare che ogni connessione/aggiunta in più, nella cavetteria, può introdurre un degrado nel segnale audio. Se invece avete casse acustiche amplificate o un amplificatore con ingresso su spine RCA, allora per voi non è un problema.

🔸🔸 Controlli del volume
- Eh già, non ci sono. Io ho una configurazione in cui la cassa amplificata con la manopola del controllo volume è vicina al preamplificatore phono; pertanto non sento alcun bisogno di operare sul pre-phono per modificare il volume. Ma se volete mettere le casse in una posizione un po' diversa? Magari sopra un'alta mensola, oppure semi nascoste dentro un mobile. O ancora, usate delle cuffie che non offrono il controllo del volume. Ebbene in tali situazioni questa mancanza risulterebbe essere molto problematica.

Io lo reputo indubbiamente come un buon prodotto. L'audio che restituisce è di buona qualità, con la capacità di rendere in maniera impeccabile le varie frequenze nello spettro sonoro udibile. Posso dire che funziona, e funziona bene, peraltro viene proposto ad un costo decisamente ragionevole.

Purtroppo le mancanze descritte poco sopra mi costringono a togliere una stella nella valutazione finale. Ma, attenzione, se non rientrate nelle situazioni in cui quelle mancanze sono critiche, allora potete considerarlo tranquillamente un prodotto a 5 stelle, e in tal caso ve lo consiglio senza riserve. Pensate che da quando ho iniziato a provarlo è passato ormai più di un mese e, nonostante abbia altri PRE-phono disponibili, per il momento non ho alcuna intenzione di sostituirlo ☺

Most modern turntables have a preamp built in. So be sure you even need this. But usually, especially with budget players, the on-board pre-amps aren't great. Many give you the option of outputting line level or phono level signals. From what I've seen, having a separate pre-amp is USUALLY an upgrade from the built-in preamp, even if you have a pretty decent turntable, even if the preamp is only $22.99, like this one.
No, it does not have any fancy features and it's not going to give you the same performance as a high priced preamp, but it DOES have a power switch, which is freaking fantastic. I have a turntable set up in an outdoor work area under an enclosed party tent. My previous pre sounded ok, but I had to unplug it when not in use or just let it sit there powered all the time. This fixes that. A LOT of pre-amps do not have switches and there are respectable reasons for that, but if you just want a pre-amp that does a serviceable job and can be shut off without disconnecting a cable, this is a winner.
While I use nicer stuff in my living room rig and I do generally respect high-end components, the pre-amp really does a very simple job. IMO, you will typically hear a much more noticeable improvement with a cartridge/stylus upgrade than a pre-amp upgrade (or stepping away from the built-in pre, although some built-ins are pretty awful, so that can be a good step). Ideally, upgrade them all to whatever you can afford, but focus on the cartridge/stylus - it can make a night/day difference. Pre-amps usually make a much more subtle difference, in my experience. I'm sure a $500 unit sounds better than a $20 unit, but is it $480 better? Doubt it.
For just casual listening or taking your first step away from a built-in pre, this is a great option. If you have an older turntable or any that doesn't have a pre-amp built in, this will do the job and not sound half bad!
