Just Good Friends: The Complete Series 1-3 [DVD] (1983) (4-Disc Set)
Paul Nicholas and Jan Francis are outstanding in their roles as Vince the cockney, unreliable, Jack-the-lad with a witty one-liner for every occasion and Penny the posh, prim and proper lady. When Vince got cold feet and left Penny standing at the altar, Penny got on with her life and tried to forget Vince. Five years, and a chance meeting later, Penny's feelings are rekindled. Insisting that they would remain 'just good friends' a classic love-hate, on-off relationship is (again) established.
Product description
Paul Nicholas and Jan Francis are outstanding in their roles as Vince the cockney, unreliable, Jack-the-lad with a witty one-liner for every occasion and Penny the posh, prim and proper lady. When Vince got cold feet and left Penny standing at the altar, Penny got on with her life and tried to forget Vince once and for all. Five years, and a chance meeting later, Penny's feelings are rekindled, feelings that she thought were gone forever. Insisting that they would remain 'just good friends' but with emotions resurfacing a classic love-hate, on-off relationship is (once again) established. Exacerbating Vince and Penny's predicament are both sets of parents, Vince's Les and Rita are all leopard print and Brylcreem, whilst Penny's Daphne and Norman are quite the opposite, wine tasting and twin set types. Written by John Sullivan (Only Fools and Horses, Citizen Smith), this is a classic story of love, lost and found, where the question on everyone's lips is will Vince and Penny remain 'just good friends'? Newly restored by the BBC and available for the first time in its entirety including the long unseen 1984 Christmas special John Sullivan's classic sit-com is still as endearing and enjoyable as when it first aired.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 December 2024This is a lovely sitcom written by John Sullivan about a young couple who were engaged and then reunited start seeing each other again who eventually do tie the knot in the final episode.
This stars Jan Francis and Paul Nicholas as Penny and Vincent who originally stood Penny up at the altar and bumps into him at a bar where they reconnect and tell of their lives after going separate ways but start to fall for each other again much to the chagrin of Penny's posh mother who disapproved of Vince and was happy when he stood her up is now horrified she is back dating him.
This is a different sitcom to Only Fools and Horses as John Sullivan was known for Wheeler dealer Del Boy surprised viewers with a romantic sitcom but still had that only fools flavour as Vincent was into making schemes to con Penny he'd become a changed man.
This is a lovely series and I much prefer this over Only Fools and Horses even though I enjoyed a couple of episodes of Horses this is my favourite John Sullivan sitcom.
If you love Paul Nicholas and Jan Francis this is a must for your collection.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 November 2024Nostalgia back to an earlier era with a hint of comedy that's another nice N easy N cosy TV lighthearted programme.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 July 2024a comedy gem from the 1980's from John Sullivan written after Citizen Smith and alongside Only Fools and Horses. a bittersweet compelling comedy about class and failed but possibly rekindled romance, reminding us that they don't make them like this anymore
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 August 2024Love this “Just Good Friends” DVD. So funny. Item is all sealed.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 July 2023I watched this comedy in the 1980s when it came out. It was delightful then and is still delightful now.
When you watch it now, you can see and observe Penny's mother portrayed as the narcissist she is—wonderfully played by the late Sylvia Kay. And the wee madam that is Vince's wife before the divorce. She takes him for all he has got and is only there for the money
But true love wins in the end and it was good at the end to see them married - eventually
Well worth a watch and much better than these new comedies that are around today which are so woke and PC
Loved the Christmas special which was effectively a prequel of how they got there and what happened before. Loved seeing 1980s fashion and what happened in those days - it was 40 years ago would you belive
Well worth a watch

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Good Friends --- Still A Favorite
I have not seen this since it came out... most of it held up pretty well against time. Saw some things I missed the first time. It was great to revisit this television gem. As far as I know this never aired outside of the UK... you need a zone free DVD player to watch it in the US.
