Product description
An early cinematic pioneer with an undeniably pervasive influence, Louis Feuillade made hundreds of films in a short career spanning only a few decades. Today, he is best remembered for his landmark serials Գô, Les Vampires, Judexand Tih Minh, four crime epics that have had an immeasurable impact on popular culture around the globe. The Masters of Cinema series is honoured to present these silent masterworks on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK from astonishing 4K restorations.
Adapted from a series of popular novels by Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre, Գô stars René Navarre as the eponymous criminal mastermind. Across the serial’s five episodes, Գô is pursued by Inspector Juve (Edmund Breon) and newspaper reporter Jérôme Fandor (Georges Melchior) as he carries out his nefarious schemes. In Les Vampires, journalist Philippe Guérande (Édouard Mathé) attempts to investigate an enigmatic criminal gang operating in the Parisian underworld – a group known only as the Vampires. In Judex, a mysterious vigilante (René é) sets out to bring down a corrupt banker named Favraux (Louis Leubas). Finally, in Tih Minh, a young man (é) returning from an expedition in Indochina becomes embroiled in a game of espionage and thievery with a gang of mysterious jewel thieves.
Feuillade’s crime serials had an enormous impact on some of the greatest filmmakers of the twentieth century, chiefly Fritz Lang and Alfred Hitchcock. They also played an important role in the development of the criminal mastermind and masked vigilante characters that would proliferate in pulp magazines, film, television, radio and comic books over the next few decades, including Dr Mabuse, The Shadow and Diabolik. Feuillade’s celebrated serials are collected here in their entirety alongside a wealth of special features.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 November 2024Apparently, French director Louis Feuillade (1873-1925) hadn't really been regarded as a great director until gaining a belated recognition in the 1960s. He was a prolific writer and director, author of some 700 films of varying length and mostly remembered for his silent crime serials featured in this box: Fantomas, The Vampires, Tih Minh and Judex, all shot between 1913 and 1918.
I didn't really know what to expect when I preordered, going by the strength of Feuillade's reputation as a truly innovative and unjustly disregarded director. But the box certainly didn't disappoint. It's been designed beautifully, featuring a small poster and a very useful booklet with great essays on Feuillade's filmmaking. In short: a delight, visually and in terms of written content. But what about the films themselves? Obviously I can't judge this box on its entire content as there's hours and hours of material in there. However, I did watch the first two 'Vampire' episodes and I thought them excellent: despite their age (over a century old!) they were gripping and I found myself wishing to continue at the end of each episode - which surely is a good sign. The print is really fine for its age (though it does show) and the accompanying music (always something contentious) I found fitting as well.
I'm quite sure I'm headed for hours of pleasurable watching with this admirable Masters of Cinema box of treasures. Very much recommended.
