Product description

Featuring an all-star ensemble cast in Richard Harris (The Guns of Navarone), Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs), Omar Sharif (Lawrence of Arabia), Ian Holm (Chariots of Fire), David Hemmings (The Charge of the Light Brigade) and Shirley Knight (The Counterfeit Killer), Juggernaut is an unrelentingly tense suspense thriller directed by Richard Lester (A Hard Day’s Night).

The cruise liner SS Britannic is travelling through the North Atlantic with over a thousand passengers on board. As the vessel drifts through the vast ocean, its owner – Nicholas Porter (Holm) – receives a call from a man who identifies himself only as “Juggernaut.” The ominous voice on the telephone informs Porter that there are explosives planted aboard the Britannic, and that he will sink the ship at dawn unless a hefty ransom is paid. A race against time then begins as Captain Alex Brunel (Sharif), Royal Navy officer Anthony Fallon (Harris) and police superintendent John McLeod (Hopkins) work together across land and sea in a desperate attempt to avert certain disaster and secure the safety of the ship’s passengers.

Inspired by a real-life bomb threat against the Queen Elizabeth 2 on 17 May 1972 and drawing on a popular taste in the 1970s for taut crime thrillers and disaster movies, Juggernautis one of the most entertaining and suspenseful British films of the decade. Eureka Classics is proud to present the film on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK from a high-definition restoration.

PRESS

tough, forthright, well-made action thriller which holds together tremendously well…Juggernaut now has an almost gritty social-realist look.” – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

streets ahead of your average disaster movie, with dialogue from Alan Plater lending the script some depth” – The Times

a penetrating and sardonic commentary on a fading and troubled Britain, neatly characterised by the lumberingly chaotic ocean liner, 'The Britannic'… The pace of the thriller aspect is unflagging… Without a doubt, one of the best movies of 1974.” – Time Out

You want an unpretentious genuine adventure/thriller with a good cast, terrific location on very stormy seas, a plot that I found tense and even though I knew roughly the outcome - I was still on the edge of my seat. Some may dismiss this as a plot hole ridden cliche - and in a way it is a cliched plot, but director Lester tells it without drawing breath. The scenes on the ship are extraordinary, and the entire cast work well. Harris and Hemmings as the disposal experts parachuted on to the ship, and Shariff and his crew all shine in parts that could be overplayed but aren't. The BluRay is excellent with good sound and subtitles and a very interesting booklet with full cast list (read after seeing the film). A young Hopkins is wasted as is Shirley Knight, and what on earth was the thug John Bindon doing in the film. I think I saw him for 5 seconds in the plane before the parachute jump. As you can guess I was in the right mood and thoroughly enjoyed the film. NO swearing!!! See - It was the norm then - why not now. Recomended for the whole family.

I saw Juggernaut in the cinema when it first came out back in 1974.
    There's more suspense than action.
50 years later, it's still exciting as before.
Thanks to Eureka video that brought this film onto blu ray celebrating its 50th anniversary!

Most disaster movies from the 70's and 80's are just that, but Juggernaut, also know under the far more hyperbolic title, Terror on the Britannic, is one of the exceptions to the rule!

A stellar performance from a grizzled, sweaty, and most probably a bit sozzled, Richard Harris, a genuinely tense and exciting plot and a raft (life raft?) of international co-stars all compliment proceedings perfectly, making it definitely worthy of reappraisal!

Nice to see Eureka Entertainment in the UK finally giving the film the love it deserves, with this Blu-ray release!
