Product description
Product Description
Adapted from Michael Bond’s beloved books, PADDINGTON follows the comic misadventures of a polite young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British, who travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realise that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kind Brown family, who read the label around his neck (‘Please look after this bear. Thank you.’) and offer him a temporary haven. But little do the Browns realise just how much comic mayhem one young bear will bring to their family life, and when this rarest of bears catches the eye of a sinister, seductive taxidermist, it isn’t long before his home – and very existence – is under threat ...
Produced by David Heyman (The Harry Potter series) PADDINGTON, is a timeless and universal story written and directed by Paul King. With Ben Whishaw as the voice of Paddington Bear, the film’s all-star cast includes Hugh Bonneville, Nicole Kidman, Sally Hawkins, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi and Julie Walters.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 July 2015Very well done, Paddington arrives in modern London and has a very big adventure.
The original Paddington had short charming stories like buying a silver marmalade stand for sixpence at auction, or bungling some DIY, and the children were perfectly behaved. Of course, things have been polished up to move with the times. This movie is a lot more interesting because the children are more realistic (slightly bored with life and parents), and the plot is movie-length. Paddington manages to do a lot more damage, like an ursine Mister Bean.
Peter Capaldi is wonderful as meddlesome neighbour Mr. Curry. Nicole Kidman is a glamorous baddie Miss Millicent, planning to make sure Paddington comes to a sticky end - and not involving marmalade. There are some good jokes such as Mr. Curry's misunderstanding with Millicent in the phone box, and his horror when Millicent closes the door on her van.
As a 51-year old, part of me is outraged by this Peruvian illegal immigrant. They come over here, they take our breakfast conserves, scrounging food and lodging off Londoners. He could at least get some Pan pipes and go busking. I shall write to the times about the failure of Britain's border controls...
Fortunately I have a silly sense of humour, ditto my girlfriend, so we enjoyed it immensely.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 April 2015Now let's get one thing straight from the start; the animation in this film is out of this world. There's a scene in the early part of the film. when Paddington is still in Darkest Peru, where he and his Great Aunt float down the river in a canoe. You won't believe it isn't really happening. Just watch the oars in the water.
Not long after that you forget that this is an animated film at all. Paddington's character, voiced beautifully by Ben Wishaw, soon becomes part of the great cast of human characters, headed up by Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins and the evil Nicole Kidman.
This is a great treat for all the family. It does get a little scary at times but don't all good stories? I would like to have seen more of Paddington's interaction with the real world but I'm sure there'll be a sequel to cover all that. And it deserves one.
It's set, of course, in a London that hasn't existed since Mary Poppins, but who cares? A whole family could happily sit down to watch this, and how many films can that be said of these days? It's a throwback, to be sure, but its characters carry it off.
Excellent.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 April 2015Excellent film, sympathetic updated but still with the feel of the books and the animated series. Paddington is a bear out of his comfort zone, ending up in London following an Earthquake in his home "Darkest Peru."
Lots of films of much loved books and shows have been disastrous, step forward Thunderbirds and Magic Roundabout. This is different, while some of the set pieces are a bit more extreme and a villain has been introduced to spice things the story telling and atmosphere of a slightly naive bear and a kindly family who take him in remain and the script and characters bring back memories of reading the books.
Testament to this is that I watched it with a teenage boy who is into action films and a wife who hates most animated films and both loved it. The cast are excellent, who else but Julie Walters could play Mrs Bird while Nicole Kidman has a great time camping it up as the evil Taxidermist with a massive grudge.
If your worried it may spoil your memories then fear not while if the you are not familiar with Paddington and the premise of a Marmalade eating bear that talks sounds a bit preposterous then give it a whirl. It may just be the best film you will see this year.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 February 2018When I was a lad (yes, we had TV then) one of the programmes on kids TV was an animated version of the Michael Bond's Paddington stories. It was narrated by the great Michael Hordern and used a kind of cut out animation technique (far before South Park) with monochrome backgrounds. It wasn't my favourite animation (DANGER MOUSE - DE DAH DE DAH DE DAH!!!) but it was enjoyable enough.
Being now a father, and wanting to impart the "This was like it was in my days" stich (cue comments about dinosaurs roaming the plains in response), I was both happy and worried when I heard that they were going to bring the Peruvian bear to the big screen.
I must admit, I shouldn't have been. Having a homage to the old TV animation at the start and featuring Michael Bond (now no longer with us alas) in a brief cameo were a good start. But the real life cast are excellent and the CGI bear...well the CGI is really really good, he doesn't feel like special effects at all. The storyline is good too.
Frankly, if you ever liked Paddington either in TV or book format (or indeed both), then this movie is a must see.
