Please align the custom gold-plated high current spring to the GPl0 solder point of your Raspberry Pi 5, ensure alignment and lock it tightly with copper pillars.

Ribbon connections are precise and you need to be careful when installing to avoid damaging the ribbon or connectors. Slow and steady is the key.

Ich habe diesen 'GeeekPi N21 Dual NVMe SSD Shield' als Tester angeboten bekommen und gebe zu, dass ich vor allem aus Neugier zugesagt habe. 'Full-size' m2 SSDs sind am Raspi sowieso schon eher selten. Verbreiteter als die 2280 sind 2230 oder 2242. Dieser Adapter aber will gleich zwei 2280 an den Raspi bringen.

Man erhält in einem Karton eine sauber aufgebaute Platine mit der gleichen Grundfläche wie der Raspi selbst und ein Tütchen mit allerlei Installationsmaterial. Außerdem gibt es eine Anleitung sowohl für die mechanische Installation, als auch für die programmtechnische. Die mechanische Installation ist eigentlich ein Kinderspiel. Man sollte zuerst die SSDs installieren, weil man nach dem Zusammenbau nicht mehr an die Schrauben kommt. Danach kann man die Platine auf 4 Gewindebolzen schrauben, die man vorher am Raspi anbringt. Eine sorgfältige Ausrichtung ist anzuraten, da die Stromversorgung des SSD-Shields über 3 Pogo-Pins erfolgt, die federnd auf die passenden Lötstellen des 40-poligen Pfostensteckverbinders des Rapis treffen müssen. Das funktioniert auch, der Sitz der Pins sollte aber überprüft werden. Danach kann man das PCI Flachbandkabel zwischen Shield und Raspi installieren. Die Ausrichtung dabei ist eigentlich einfach, weil die mitgelieferten Kabel alle Pins 1:1 verbinden. Somit muss das Kabel nur soweit richtig verwendet werden, dass die Pins in den Steckern auch auf die leitenden Stellen der Kabel treffen und nicht auf die 'blaue Seite', die gar keine Verbindung herstellen kann. Kaputt machen kann man aber durch ein falsch herum gedrehtes Kabel nichts, es funktioniert dann halt schlicht nicht.

Ich habe aus Zeitmangel nicht alle Möglichkeiten der Installation ausprobiert, aber am einfachsten ist es immer noch, zumindest eine SSD mit einem Raspi OS vorzukonfigurieren. Was sich mit zwei SSDs am Raspi alles machen lässt und was vor allem sinnvoll ist, z.B. eine RAID Konfiguration, werde ich noch herausfinden müssen. Zu beachten ist auch, dass 2 einigermaßen gut belastete m2 SSDs einige Abwärme produzieren, die abgeführt werden will. Das heißt ganz kompakte Gehäuselösungen werden wohl nicht in Frage kommen und passive Kühlung wird wohl auf die Dauer auch nicht funktionieren. Das Netzteil muss natürlich auch entsprechend dimensioniert werden. Das Ganze erfordert also durchaus noch ein bisschen kreative Bastelarbeit.

Mein Fazit: der GeeekPi N21 Dual NVMe SSD Shield ist eine seltene Lösung für 2 'große' m2 SSDs an einem Raspi 5. Die Ausführung ist sauber, ist es doch gar nicht so trivial, so ein Shield z.B. unter dem Raspi mit Strom zu versorgen. Der verwendete 'packet switch' ASM1182 von asmedia ist ein probater Chip, einen PCIe upstream port auf 2 PCIe downstream ports zu verteilen. Für all die innovativen Lösungen gebe ich gerne 5 Sterne und eine Kaufempfehlung für alle, die wissen was sie damit tun wollen.

Contexto: como desde ��غ�� puedo recibir productos para probar elegí una serie de extensiones para Raspberry Pi 5, ya que pensaba comprarla en un futuro. Sin embargo he tenido varios problemas, ya que he usado tanto la tarjeta micro SDHC y el cargador de mi Raspberry Pi 4B, pero parece que no son compatibles. Por lo que la Raspberry Pi 5 va extremadamente lenta, puede tardar decenas de minutos en hacer una operación tan sencilla como abrir la línea de comandos. Por lo tanto, mi reseña se basará en mi experiencia se basará en lo poco que he podido probar.

He comprado un par de memorias M.2 SSD 2280, como era de esperar, encajan perfectamente.

Puntos positivos:

- Uso del factor de forma M.2.
- Viene en bolsa antiestática.
- Viene con todo lo necesario (tornillos, soporte, mini destornillador, conectores)
- Viene con manual y también trae un enlace para consultar más documentación sobre su montaje y configuración.
- Soporta los modelos M.2 2230, 2242, 2260 y 2280.
- Como los HATs son más habituales (según mi poca experiencia) esta base se puede combinar con otras extensiones que vengan en HAT.

Esta extensión no es un HAT, sino que va por debajo, hay que tener esto en cuenta si se quiere comprar una carcasa, ya que habitualmente las construyen para HATs.

Il modulo GeeekPi N21 consente di espandere il piccolo Raspberry Pi 5, rendendolo compatibile con SSD di tipo NVMe. L'installazione è semplice e il doppio slot consente notevoli miglioramenti sia in termini di velocità che di capacità di archiviazione. La qualità costruttiva è buona e si integra perfettamente con il Pi 5.
Montando due dischi NVMe contemporanemante, le temperature dell’intero sistema saliranno in maniera sostanziale, quindi munitevi di un sistema di raffreddamento adeguato qualora non lo abbiate già.
In conclusione, il modulo N21 è un ottimo upgrade per il piccolo Raspberry 5; l’unica pecca è il prezzo relativamente alto, pari a 39€ al momento della mia recensione.

L’installation du GeeekPi N21 Dual 2280 NVMe Base est assez simple, mais il vaut mieux avoir une certaine expérience avec les Raspberry Pi, car c'est du bricolage, fidèle à l’esprit de la plateforme. La notice de montage est un vrai atout : elle inclut des instructions pour faire reconnaître les SSD NVMe, ce qui évite de fouiller le net à la recherche de tutoriels. 🛠️

Côté performance, c'est le jour et la nuit par rapport à l’utilisation d’une carte SD classique. Avec des vitesses avoisinant les 900 Mo/s, le système est beaucoup plus réactif, et l'apport en stockage grâce à ce Hat est très appréciable. 🚀

Évidemment, avec cette configuration, l'appareil chauffe un peu plus, mais j'ai particulièrement aimé que ce Hat se monte en position basse, laissant de la place pour améliorer le refroidissement. Je pense d'ailleurs à installer un refroidissement vertical dans un second temps pour optimiser la dissipation thermique. 🌡️

Mon prochain objectif sera de configurer ces SSD NVMe en RAID, car c'est le but principal de l’acquisition de ce Hat. J'espère profiter à la fois des performances accrues et de la redondance des données.

En résumé, pour les utilisateurs qui veulent tirer le meilleur parti de leur Raspberry Pi 5, ce Hat est un excellent investissement, offrant à la fois une grande capacité de stockage et une montée en puissance significative des performances. Je le recommande vivement à tous ceux qui cherchent à maximiser les capacités de leur Raspberry Pi ! 💪

Eigentlich eine feine Sache, der PCIe-Port des RPi5 wird via AsMedia-Controller einfach erweitert und auf zwei unterschiedliche M2-Slots gesplitted. Es könnte so einfach sein, oder?

Naja, nicht ganz. Zumindest in meinem Testszenario habe ich es nicht hinbekommen das Bootlaufwerk korrekt einzubinden. Die Problematik ist nicht neu, auch Jeff Geerling hatte damit zu kämpfen - und eventuell ist das in neuen Raspian-Releases gefixt worden.

Ansonsten hält das Produkt aber was es verspricht - dem Pi5 werden hiermit zwei NVMe SSDs bekannt gemacht, die sich auch - wenn auch mit leichten Geschwindigkeitseinbußen - korrekt ansprechen lassen. Warum man das jetzt auf dem Pi5 so benötigt, und sich nicht einfach einen ThinClient neben den Router stellt?
Ehrlich gesagt: Keine Ahnung. Für viele Anwendungen ist der Pi5 einfach zu langsam oder zu Fehleranfällig. Ohne die Möglichkeit eines nicht korrumpierbaren Bootdevices ist auch der Outlook, dass das ganze System in die Hölle gerissen wird, wenn irgendwer mal ohne graceful shutdown den Strom abzieht, nicht besonders Zufriedenstellend. HomeAssistant und viele andere Pi-Projekte wiederum kommen auch gut mit nur einer SSD klar. Aber nur weil mir der Anwendungsfall nicht direkt klar wird, kann ich das Produkt per se ja nicht schlecht bewerten.

Was ich wiederum schlecht finde: Bottom Mounted. Das macht es nur schwieriger ein kompatibles Gehäuse zu finden und an die SSDs zu gelangen ist dann auch kein spaßiges Unterfangen mehr. Von der Abwärme will ich dann gar nicht erst anfangen. Dass die Stromzufuhr über Pogopins gelöst wurde und die GPIOs so prinzipiell noch zur Verfügung stehen ist nett, hätte mit leichten Designänderungen am PCB aber sicher auch topmounted noch irgendwie funktioniert.
