Product description
After a brave Hong Kong lawman is killed in a shootout, his body is reanimated by a Frankenstein style bolt of lightning. Provided he gets ‘Crank’-style regular jolts of electricity, he continues to fight crime as an invulnerable zombie cop… Perennial Cantonese movie tough guy Shing Fui-on (‘The Killer’) gets a lead of his own in this Hong Kong version of ‘Dead Heat’, with a supporting cast including Gloria Yip (‘The Story of Ricky’) and Pauline Wong (‘Mr. Vampire’).
‘The Blue Jean Monster’ blends gross out horror, comedy and action in a unique Hong Kong take on the cinematic undead!

An exciting action-comedy, body-horror hybrid from Hong Kong!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 December 2023I loved this movie, it’s so much fun. Definitely one of my favourite Hong Kong movies I’ve seen this year. The picture quality is great, the concept and story is brilliant and there are some excellent performances including a cameo by Amy yip.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 December 2023After a cop is left for dead at the hands of a gang of violent bank robbers, he's resurrected by a bolt of lightning turning him into a super-strong zombie. But as his body starts to decay and shut down it's a race against time to track down the perpetrators of his death and also to keep himself 'alive' long enough to witness the birth of his unborn child.
This is a fairly energetic and fun bit of Hong Kong entertainment from 1991 throwing in some violent action, a bit of zombie body-horror and a mixed bag of comedy. There's rarely a dull moment as things move along at very quick pace. The film throws in some fairly amusing and varied humour including some slapstick moments, tasteless gross-out ickyness and other general bonkers stuff. Not all of the comedy hits the mark though and one joke in particular involving toothless babies in the womb was eyebrow raisingly inappropriate and might not go down too well with some lol! The moments of action, when they do occur, are quite exciting and well shot and choreographed. The ruthless antagonists of the film are introduced during a violent bloodsoaked bank raid and make for a fairly unlikable bunch, unfortunately they didn't get enough screentime. The hero of the piece, played by Fui-On Shing, is brilliant and it was great to see him play the good guy for a change, he has much better acting range than I expected. All-in-all it's a thoroughly enjoyable and fun ride. Despite the comedy not always being on point and the ending being disappointingly abrupt, there's enough here to have a good time with.
The 88 Films Blu-ray here features a pretty good looking transfer, no complaints with regards to that. Extras are very much lacking though sadly. The accompanying poster features the really cool original artwork as nice compensation for that though.
