    A great film in 4k
  • Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 December 2024
I have not even opened mine yet. But from me watching it in the past I can say it's a good movie, what I don't understand is there are English dubbed versions out there but this one is only subbed. Would have been nice to have a dubbed version. So I give 4 for the film and takes away one star for the not adding a English dubbed version too it.

This is a review of the 4K version of The Bodyguard From Beijing, released by 88 Films.

I'm starting to sound like a broken record now, but what the hell has happened to 88 Films? This company used to be synonymous with high quality releases, on par with Arrow, Radiance and Criterion. In the last eighteen months, we've been subjected to bust after bust after bust.

The Bodyguard From Beijing, while not the absolute disaster of Fist of Legend 4K, is another casualty of shoddy treatment. Once again, there is NO English dub (a unique selling point of these films, for children of the 80s who first saw them on Betamax) which there's simply no excuse for. Frame for frame, this is IDENTICAL to the Dimension Home Video DVD, which does feature an English dub. Can somebody PLEASE tell me why a £30 4K release is inferior to a DVD released two decades ago?

Unlike Fist of Legend, TBFB actually is 4K resolution and looks beautiful, in fairness. But that alone is not worthy of the very hefty price tag. There's some fairly inconsequential extras on the blu-ray disc, but other than that, there's very little reason to recommend this.

Decades ago, Dimension Home Video released The Bodyguard From Beijing (as The Defender) and My Father The Hero (as The Enforcer) as a DVD twin pack. Both films look great and offer an English dub option. You can pick it up second hand for as little as £8.

Fist of Legend, The Golden Lotus, The Shadow Boxing, To Kill A Mastermind and now The Bodyguard From Beijing - a litany of trash releases with minimum effort from 88 Films. I wouldn't mind as much, but the company charges an absolute premium for these titles.

Personally, I don't think just enough is good enough.

Before Jet Li had his first English speaking role in Lethal Weapon 4, he was in loads of Hong Kong action movies, this particular one being my favourite so naturally this is a unbeatable release for me and clearly the best version, the packaging is terrific.

I highly recommend this excellent movie, especially if you're into martial arts, action movies.

Jet Li stars in his first modern action film. Christy Cheung plays a prosecution witness in need of serious protection from those who would stop at nothing to keep her from testifying including assigning over 100 incognito assassins to hill her in a crowded shopping centre. Jet Li, the best bodyguard in China is assigned to protect her. Jet Li kills an assassins and incurs the wrath of a brother who vows revenge. Soon both Jet and Christy's lives are in danger.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recently Re-released as The Defender
Reviewed in the United States on 13 October 2000
Be aware that this video has recently been re-released under the title of "The Defender". Don't buy it twice... I did and with the exception of the DVD Case there are few differences. It's an OK Jet Li movie, but not his best. Long on romance and short on action. Good one to watch with the women of they're Martial Arts refusniks.

Jet Li is a better bodyguard than Kevin Costner anyday. This movie rocks, the action is amazing. It grabs you from the beginning to the end...

2.0 out of 5 stars English Dubbed!!
Reviewed in the United States on 5 August 2014
3.5 stars for the movie, 1 star for the description. If you're looking for the original Cantonese version, look elsewhere. What you're actually getting is a poorly dubbed English version. I'm disappointed that the description says this is the Cantonese version when it's not.
