Chow Yun-Fat plays a gambling kingpin named Ko Chun - the "God of Gamblers" - who has a miraculous ability to win whether it be at cards, dice or Mahjong. However, on one fateful night, Ko Chun has his slick and cool persona shattered after becoming an unintentional victim of a prank and a knock to the head by a young street hustler played by Andy Lau who takes in the now child-like Ko Chun striken with memory loss using him to swindle and hustle others out of money but making some enemies along the way too.A strange mix of drama, comedy and action in this one. The transition from emotional drama to slapstick comedy to violent shoot-outs was a bit jarring and really makes the film feel uneven. There's even an unpleasant moment of implied necrophilia! The tone really is all over the place! Those expecting another gun-totting bad-ass Chow Yun-Fat performance might also feel a bit disappointed too as he spends much of the film as squealing man-child munching on his favourite brand of chocolate after losing his senses due to a heavy blow to the head. It was an opportunity for Chow Yun-Fat to display his acting range but admittedly all the child-like behaviour did get a bit much at times. However, we're treated to an amazing moment once Chow Yun-Fat's character regains his senses during an excellent blood-soaked action sequence in a shopping mall where dual-wielding pistols are used in a memorable moment of ultra-violence. The action sequences throughout are few and brief but well handled. The sequences at the gambling tables are nicely shot, suspenseful and tense including the climactic showdown which ended the film in a very satisfying way. Though it's not a film I revisit very often it does have its highlights to enjoy, but not enough to cement it as one of my firm favourites of Chow's filmography.The Blu-ray release from 88 Films is a very solid edition of the film to have on the shelves. You get the original Hong Kong version of the film which is playable in Cantonese accompanied by English subtitles, an English dubbing track is also provided. The picture quality is really nice too, a big upgrade over the previous UK DVD from MIA. However, that old DVD also included the shorter Export cut of the film which is missing from the 88 Films Blu-ray so collectors might want to hang on to it. Also included is an informative booklet, double-sided poster with excellent new and retro artwork and the Blu-ray sleeve also has multiple artwork options which should please collectors.
