Product description
After seeing off hopping corpses in Mr. Vampire, the great Lam Ching-ying (Enter the Dragon, Eastern Condors) faces a new supernatural challenge: someone is using the living dead to smuggle drugs into modern day Hong Kong and only Lam's Officer Feng – policeman and Taoist master – can stop them, proving the power of traditional Chinese magic in the process!
Mixing comedy, action and esoteric lore, Magic Cop sees the incomparable Lam at his brilliant best. 88 Films are proud to present this gorgeously restored treat from the golden age of Hong Kong cinema.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 February 2024This was not bad at all, dubbed in English but 88 films have done fab job of bringing this to blu ray
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 October 2023Nice Bluray.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 September 2013Lam Ching Ying stars once again fighting vampires to save the world. This time it is not set in the old times, they bring it into modern day which is good to see.
There are some good fights in the movie, Billy Chow stars as Michiko Nishiwaki side thug and has some good moments. The fight in the station with lam and his 2 cop friends against a guy taken over by a spirit is a good scene.
Lam Ching Ying always pulls this role off, good movie in the Mr.Vampire series.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 January 2015Follow up to mr vampire get all 5 available at amazon, really funny, dont let subtitles put you off, there quite big , 5 excellent stories, this is very funny try it and others
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 November 2023It's an OK film but the transfer is not great.
88films used to be a lot better with their picture quality, this is a let down for me.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 July 2023As some may know, I have petitioned both 88 Films and Eureka repeatedly to request that they inform their customers that some films contain scenes of genuine animal cruelty.
As I've yet to receive a response from either company, I feel I have no choice but to warn viewers of content that may be upsetting or even traumatic.
Therefore, please be advised that Magic Cop contains one scene of animal cruelty. This involves a live cat first having a cord wrapped around its neck and then being suspended from the ceiling - effectively hanging the animal.
For those interested in other reviews of this nature, I'd like to make the reader aware I have posted similar warnings for the Ebola Syndrome and the Hopping Mad series of films.
I will continue to warn viewers of titles that contain animal cruelty, until companies like 88 Films and Eureka get their acts together and start doing it themselves.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 July 2023Lam Ching-Ying returns to monster-busting duties using his Taoist bag of tricks playing a Hong Kong policeman helping to take down an evil sorceress who's using mind controlled zombies to conduct a drug trafficking operation.
Also known as MR. VAMPIRE 5, 1990's MAGIC COP is another entry in the many unofficial MR. VAMPIRE sequels/spin-offs that Hong Kong produced in the 80s and 90s, some of which, like this one, do not even feature vampires! This one also broke from the norm and takes place in a modern day urban setting rather than rural period locations. Overall its one of the tamer entries in the series. Not entirely successful with the comedic side of things either, despite being amusing with likeable characters there wasn't any laugh out loud monents. Once the action picks up we're treated to the trademark creative choreography that 'Mr. Vampire' is known for mixing up fight sequences with traditional magic spells and rituals and builds to a terrific finale thats well worth the wait. A recommended viewing if you're familiar with the Mr. Vampire films or enjoy escapist light-hearted Hong Kong action cinema from the 80s/90s.
88 Films have made this available for the first time in the UK in an adequate enough looking HD Blu-ray release featuring both the original Cantonese and English dubbed audio along with English subtitles. Also featuring among the extras is the alternative Taiwanese version of the film in a lower quality SD transfer. Be aware that this UK release is CUT by 10 seconds to a scene where a cat is gripped around the throat and also hoisted up by the neck by string. However, if you insist on viewing films uncut as originally intended and you have a multi-region Blu-ray player just switch the region code to A and it will play the uncut version as released in the US.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 February 2007After "Mr. Vampire," there was a trend of Taoist-magic/vampire hunting movies, preferably starring Ching Ying Lam. One of the better examples is "Magic Cop," which introduces Taoist magic and zombies into a modern urban setting -- it has some humor that doesn't quite work, but it's still an enjoyable supernatural comedy.
It introduces us to Uncle Fung (Lam), a kindly rural policeman who is "more like a Taoist priest than a cop" -- including apprehending an angry ghost with a candle and cloth, after an old lady accidentally angers it. There must be a lot of people who get killed by angry spirits, if this scene is any indicator.
Then we switch to ndercover cops Lam (Wilson Lam) and 'Head' (Miu Kiu Wai), who try to apprehend a drug courier, only to get tossed away like rag dolls. Turns out she died several days ago. This is the ideal crime for Fung, so he and his pretty niece Lin move into Lam's bachelor pad. No, I don't know why Fung doesn't kick Lam out the window for hitting on his niece.
When Fung isn't keeping the womanizing Lam away from his niece, the three cops are tracking the dead woman's boyfriend. The man unwittingly leads them to the head of the drug ring -- a Japanese Taoist sorceress, who reanimates corpses as couriers. Only Fung can stop another Taoist magician -- but soon they've unleashed a horrific zombie that wants them all dead.
Reportedly Lam didn't really enjoy doing these vampire/zombie/ghostbuster roles, and some of them were pretty lame. Fortunately "Magic Cop" is one of the better roles, and it actually improves as you watch it multiple times. After all, it shares a writer with the classic "Shaolin Soccer."
Expect lots of kung-fu and unusual action scenes, like a wonderful scene where Fung battles fiery cloaks and flying roofing tiles. But there's plenty of humor too, ranging from cheap laughjs to more long-running jokes (like Fung redecorating the bachelor pad). Too bad the subtitling is typical eighties stuff -- sometimes it's hard to tell what they're saying.
Ching-Ying Lam is giving a typical performance here (the stoic Taoist priest), but he gets some great, acrobatic kung-fu near the end. Michiko Nishiwaki is wonderfully creepy as the sorceress with the deadly ropes. But too much attention is paid to his sidekicks, one trusting and kind of dumb, and the other cocky and womanizing.
"Magic Cop" is a pleasant variation of the usual vampire-busting movie, and Ching Ying Lam never disappoints with his signature role. Definitely worth seeing, despite the flawed sidekicks.
