Product description
A high-kicking Hong Kong soldier-of-fortune (Andy Lau, ‘Infernal Affairs’) finds himself on the trail of an alien artefact and forced to contend with both an intrepid lady FBI agent (Cynthia Rothtrock, ‘China O’Brien’) and a Russian crime lord (Richard Norton, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’).
The feet and fists fly fast and funky on sunny Greek locations, on Hong Kong’s mean streets and amid the ruins of an ancient UFO.
Populist Hong Kong film-maker Wong Jing (‘City Hunter’) remixes ‘ET’ into a wacky comedy caper that delivers some of the best traditional kung fu fighting ever performed in a modern setting.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2023***Waring Spoilers*** To start with, I already own this on two different DVD releases, one from Hong Kong and one from Germany, plus the Panorama Blu-ray release from Hong Kong. This release beats the previously mentioned releases in regards to the picture and audio quality, which is fantastic on this Blu-ray release. Directed by Wong Jing who is a sometimes hit or miss Director for some, but he is right on the money for this film, a completely wacky and odd combination of action and comedy that thankfully works 100% for this Excellent film. Tony Leung siu hung ( brother of Bruce Leung siu lung) handles the Martial Arts choreography with a firm hand on the stylistically perfect elements, combination of slam bang action with intricate and intresting weapons work with traditional Egale Claw and Northern Praying Mantis Kung Fu very well represented. Andy Lau is brilliant as per normal, Natalis Chan and Director Wong Jing him self as a actor in the film handle the comedy with great aplomb. Cynthia Rothrock and Richard Norton are high standard as they always are known to be very reliable with their real life Martial Arts skills. Shout out to Eddie Maher and Phillip Ko Fei in small roles. The plot of a Alien crystal, who is sentient, Found in Greece and brought back to Hong Kong has to be seen to be believed, and Natalis Chan's hands and feet changing position, is very wacky and I will not explain the situation or the whole plot but with mention of those two elements, hopefully your interest is awakened, and you will purchase this release of this amazing and fun filled film , very short review, but when you get the BLU-RAY it will speak for itself, Thank you
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 20231986's MAGIC CRYSTAL has the KGB, Interpol and the Hong Kong police clashing together after the discovery of a mysterious large green crystal that turns out to be an alien being which a young boy has befriended in its quest to return home.
Some Spielberg inspired Hong Kong sci-fi action-adventure channelling a bit of INDIANA JONES and E.T into the mix along with fight sequences aplenty! Sets off at an exciting pace with fight scene after fight scene with the likes of Andy Lau, Cynthia Rochrock and Richard Norton performing some quality martial arts action from Hong Kong to Athens, Greece. There's also a healthy amount of comedy thrown in which didn't always hit the mark but there a were a few genuine laughs to be had with some absurdist slapstick and other funny scenarios. The interactions between the boy and the crystalised alien-being were mildly endearing but their friendship was not quite as developed to the levels seen with the character of Elliot in E.T. These cutesy moments did seem at odds with the hard-hitting violent action scenes so I wouldn't say this is a completely child-friendly movie. But it's an exciting and entertaining bit of escapism with that likeable 80s Hong Kong charm which continues to earn fans today.
88 Films have given us the Blu-ray with a new 2K scan from the original negative and what a great transfer it is! It looks gorgeous at times, especially the scenes filmed in Greece showing off the picturesque vistas and the instantly recognisable ancient Greek sites beautifully. A strong release all round which includes a poster and slipcover.
