Product description

Synopsis

"The first in a cycle of five films reviving Sax Rohmer’s Chinese super-villain, Fu Manchu, produced and written by British maverick Harry Alan Towers (The Bloody Judge).

After faking his own execution, Fu Manchu (Christopher Lee, The Terror of the Tongs) returns to the criminal underworld to realise his latest dastardly scheme for world domination: harnessing the power of a rare Tibetan flower, the Blackhill poppy, to mass-produce a deadly poison gas. Detective Nayland Smith (Nigel Green, Sword of Sherwood Forest, Play Dirty) and his stalwart sidekick Dr Petrie (Howard Marion-Crawford, Gideon’s Day) must race against the clock to stop the evil genius from unleashing his weapon of mass destruction on London.

A sterling start to the series, The Face of Fu Manchu is a thrilling pulp-adventure which benefits from assured direction from Don Sharp (Psychomania) and exuberant performances from its lead players."

Another Fu Manchu film to add to my collection

This is very much a boy's own adventure but stands up as an exciting all action movie, the car chase is particularly good. Apart from Chris Lee, it has the superb Nigel Green as Neyland Smith, one of our great British stalwarts. It's a shame he didn't do the rest of the series as he brought a dignified quality to the role. It's an even bigger tragedy that he only had another seven years to entertain us.

this film has remained one of my favourites since i first saw it nearly 20 years.
christopher lee makes for quite an imposing fu manchu and is good at it. the setting of 1920s london has been detailed brilliantly. a good cast bring an imaginative script to life, plus there is some great action along the way.
there has never been a better interpretation of nayland smith than portrayed here by nigel green. the authority and conviction that he brings to the character, makes him the best actor in the film without a doubt. i can remember feeling extremely disappointed that nigel green didn't come back for the second film "the brides of fu manchu." i feel it affects the continuity of the fu manchu series to have three different actors in total playing the same character.
still, a hugely entertaining film that is by far the best compared with the increasing rubbish that followed until it all finished in 1970.

It was fun watching this film again after all these years. The Indicator release features a terrific new restoration from a 4k scan of the original camera negative.

Enjoyed this DVD, I bought it for nostalgic reasons, remembering seeing it as a you lad and enjoying it and was surprised at that time to see some of it was shot on location in Dublin near to where I live. Good movie lots of atmosphere probably one of the better Fu Manchu's Chris Lee at his menacing best.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Fu films
Reviewed in the United States on 7 December 2012
This is a review of the Warner Archive burn on demand DVD.

Fu Manchu plans to dominate the world through the use of the poisonous extract of a rare Tibetan poppy. The only problem is that the extract is unstable above the freezing point. Fu threatens to torture the daughter of a scientist unless he finds a way to stabilize the poison. With Nayland Smith (Nigel Green) on the case, time is running out. This may be the best of the five Christopher Lee Fu Manchu films -- though "The Brides of Fu Manchu" is a very close second.

The film is widescreen (2.35:1) and in very good condition. The DVD comes in a case with a printed cover just like a regular DVD. However, there are absolutely no extras -- the only menu choice is "play"!

    Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absoluter Kult!!!
Reviewed in Germany on 22 January 2006
    finden.
Gegenüber Lee wirkt Karloffs Fu Manchu etwas theatralisch
und nicht authentisch chinesisch genug. Lee aber spielt
    den orientalischen Superverbrecher ganz zurückgenommen,
    ohne jeden unpassenden Pathos.
    Bedrohung.
So entwickelt "The Face of Fu Manchu" echte Spannung und

5.0 out of 5 stars Christopher Lee and Hammer Films...

    ...what more could you want?

I like Lee's Fu Manchu. I own all the films on this subject from Hammer Studios. Lee is delightfully evil, the Nayland Smith in this film is typically British. A delight for the fan, a good film for others.
