THE RETURN OF THE WHISTLER (D Ross Lederman, 1948)
Our sixth journey into Columbia Pictures’ film noir output walks a different path, taking a detour into the mysterious world of the Whistler, as we present all eight films in the popular series.
Adapted from a hit radio series, each episode has the Whistler emerge from the shadows to introduce a nightmarish, twisting tale in his own sardonic manner, with the first seven films starring Richard Dix (It Happened in Hollywood). In The Whistler, a guilt-stricken man hires a contract killer to end his life… but finds he cannot pull out of the deal. The Mark of the Whistler sees a homeless man claim the money in an abandoned bank account, only to find the rightful owners on his tail. In The Power of the Whistler, an amnesiac must reconstruct his dark past using only the items in his pockets. Voice of the Whistler finds a poor nurse marry her wealthy, terminally ill patient, only for him to defy the odds and recover. In Mysterious Intruder, a private eye becomes embroiled in a murderous race to track down a missing girl and a lost fortune. The Secret of the Whistler sees a young bride suspect that her new husband may have murdered his first wife. In Dix’s final film, The Thirteenth Hour, the owner of a trucking company is framed for a murder he didn’t commit. Finally, in The Return of the Whistler, Michael Duane takes the lead as a man whose fiancée is abducted on the eve of their wedding.
This essential four-disc collection marks the UK Blu-ray premiere of all eight films, and features an array of fascinating contextualising extras, including newly recorded commentaries, critical appreciations, rare archival short films, and a 120-page book. Strictly limited to 6,000 individually numbered units.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 December 2024Unlike the previous two or three columbia releases, there doesn't seem to be much filler in this set, infact the first 2 or 3 films are oustanding (low budget) B features, but with some great ideas packed into short running times. Highly recommended
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 November 2024This almost visually perfect set of The Whistler films is splendid - and Richard Dix is stupendous!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 June 2024I had read about "The Whistler" but never seen any. Richard Dix is a favourite of mine (mainly for his westerns - "The kansan") and the previous Columbia Noir releases have all been excellent. I am so glad I took the chance. If you bought and enjoyed "The Inner Sanctum" Box set, you should enjoy this collection even more. All bar one star brooding Dix with many faces turning up again and again as they were wont to do with these "B" progammers. What makes these films stand out is the scripts - Dark and whilst not always completly original, manage to grip for 60 - 70 minutes duration. My favourite? "THE POWER OF THE WHISTLER" - Really tense and pretty desrving of the "noir" tag (they all do). POWERHOUSE/INDICATOR have once again come up trumps with all films superb quality. pristine B/W 4.3 ratio prints, with good sound and subtitles. Each film (2 to a disc) has extras, and I do recomend giving them a go. Fascinating to see a very young Arthur Kennedy in a wartime propoganda film. Commentaries there if you want them. The booklet is, as usual, full of stills, credts/cast lists and essays. The price is high, but EIGHT films!!! Just be aware, although I think the films are little gems, they are low budget mid 1940's product, but boy, are they well made. Recomended to those who appresiate a more obscure film, and those who just love the "golden oldies".
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 September 2024It’s a mixed bag for me and although I enjoyed most of the stories, it still feels more like I was watching some low budget tv series than feature movies. A few of the films are actually pretty good when it comes to plot and ideas, the noir feel was there too, but others were a bit bland. Nevertheless it’s a good box set and if you collect these, I would not hesitate to buy this one at all.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 June 2024Like several film series of the 1940s. The Whistler was based up on popular radio show, with its protagonist being a shadowy figure who introduced a series of eight non-related tales of mystery and suspense. The brooding Richard Dix, who moved successfully from silent to sound movies, stars in seven of the stories, and the lesser known Michael Duane heads the cast in the eighth.
A fine addition to Indicator’s BluRay box sets of noirs, the tales feature murders, attempted murders and murder plots, several twists and all told with taut scripts, running to around 60 minutes each with little time wasted. They’re well cast and directed, several by William Castle before he gained his reputation with gimmicky horrors, these were “B” movies that stretched their limited budgets to fine effect, now seen here in pristine quality.
The films are presented two on a disc, in individual cases, with Special Features that include soundtrack commentaries, propaganda shorts, and documentaries on the Whistler series and William Castle’s early career. Packaged with a 120 fully illustrated book in a sturdy cardboard box, certainly worth its price and should be snapped up quickly as it’s a strictly limited edition.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 June 2024I saw the first four whistler films on TV back in the 1980s and have been looking for them ever since. There was no way to obtain a decent copy for a reasonable price.
I was very happy to see Indicator put this one out. You get all the original 8 movies plus some war education films (why?) plus new interviews and documentaries, a book and audio commentary.
The movies themselves certainly are the best and tightest of the film-noir budget series that were around at that time (notably the "Inner Sanctum" or "Charlie Chan"), the quality of the scripts is quite high and the direction is crisp (heyhey William Castle here!). A pure delight and a rare find these days.
Picture quality varies, basically 90% of the movies look perfectly HD-fine, while certain elements must have been added either from prints or even VHS, but then these scenes are always only a few seconds long. Never mind. This is glorious.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 July 2024As usual with Powerhouse Indicator they have really loaded many extras with this issue of Columbia Noir#6. As I'm partial anyway to loving Film Noir The Whistler series they've put together is OUTSTANDING. Joe Gallion
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 June 2024I'm excited. Powerhouse has beautifully digitized the eighth “Whistler” movies. The Columbia B film series never looked better. I hope the other series will also get a release on Blu Ray: Boston Blackie, The Shadow, The Lone Wolf, Crime Doctor, Mr. Moto and The Falcon. And what about Charlie Chan with Warner Oland (Fox), Sidney Toler (Fox and Monogram)?
