- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 June 2024For the budget it’s not a good film. Sorry that’s my opinion.I think it’s just trying too hard to cram in so much story in to short a film surprisingly they don’t spread it out like avatar,& potter did I only bought it to make up the set 😈🤨😱but I could be wrong and you may have loved it if cheap worth a look
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 March 2023A lot of reviewers seem to take this film to task over the pacing and plot, the scriptwriters were faced with a gargantuan problem, the unfortunate death of the lead actor forced a situation rarely seen in the film industry, do you replace the lead or kill off the character? They took the latter path as I think any actor taking on this role would be damned and praised in equal measure. having decided on this, it appears the original plot was kept and adapted into the screenplay. making his sister into the new black panther has to take it's time, that is why the film seems to dawdle along in-between the action sequences, she has to go through the hero's journey of self discovery or the plot would look too rushed, a lot of additional footage was added to pay homage to Mr Boseman who made the role his own. what people must understand is, in the Marvel universe each film is a set up for the next one in a series, thus a great deal of plot issues have to resolved before you can move on. having said all that, my wife and I watched this together and found it fascinating and sad, the actors portraying their roles seem genuinely committed and find it difficult to sustain themselves during a very strained shooting schedule, by the end though everyone concerned appeared to get the story in gear in order to make their own mark. I did not expect anything too amazing, but the film was pretty much as I expected it to be, all in all a courageous effort trying to keep all the scenes stitched together and meaningful, as usual, my answer is, if you can do better under the circumstances, write your own plot, plenty of people will pick holes in it. Anyway, the CGI and mechanical effects are up to the usual standard, water is the most difficult, but they seemed to get this more or less right, watch out for Wakanda technology, it's very close to Federation standards, warp drive next?

The film.
Alas this is not the Black Panther sequel we could have had, given that Chadwick Boseman died. Instead, we get a story of the country trying to cope after the death of T'Challa. Threats arise from the outside world, who want their miracle maguffin stuff. And from under the sea as well. It's time for the rise of the Submariner....
They could have recast the lead and gone on with whatever original plans might have been. But we got this instead. I am afraid I have to go with the should have recast camp. It's a shame what happened to Chadwick Boseman. You have to admire him when you read about he handled things. And I have lost close relatives to cancer so I know what it's like for people to lose loved ones that way. But you can only cry so much for someone you didn't know. This does just manage not to wallow too much. But it comes close. I don't do emotional correctness [google it]. But that's just me.
Then there's the story. Such as a story it is. I actually found Shuri and M'Baku more interesting characters in the first film. Where they were supporting players. Some characters just work better as such than becoming lead ones. They can get overexposed if you do such. Like Jason King [ask your grandparents] Or Spike on Buffy/Angel. Shuri does start off with a good story here, as she has to deal with losing her brother. But it just turns her into strong woman heroine character, and the smart sassy technical genius we had before vanishes. Which is a shame because I liked that version. You want strong woman CHARACTER. Not STRONG woman character. They're getting cliched. M'Baku still has some moments. Such as they are.
Wakanda is supposed to be a country. It seems though to be one with a lot of rooms containing a couple of people. And just a couple of crowd shots. So it never really feels like one. I hadn't seen the first film since it came out, so when we got a shock return my reaction was uhh...who is that again?
Then there's new characters. Riri Williams aka Ironmaiden/Ironheart of whatever. She's basically the new Tony Stark. Technical genius with robot suit. She's not bad. She's not irritatingly hip or comedic as she could have been. But...she's just there. And doesn't really stick in the mind as a result. Watch for the impending disney plus tv show. Of course.
Also: Namor aka the Submariner. Don't think it actually called him the latter though. Main thrust of this film. He and his underwater people are trying to fight Wakanda. I honestly forget why because his endgame is never clear and what hints you do get just seem to indicate he's changing it as he goes along. Namor had to be introduced this way because just the Hulk Marvel don't have the solo rights to him, so he can't get a solo movie. He has been re imagined with Latin American stylings. So we can have long back story of how badly the europeans and northerners treated folks. Because colonialism is bad, 'mkay?. The fact that the Aztecs conquered places and the Incas did human sacrifice is not mentioned. Of course.
This is the area where this film sinks. It spends far too much time on his back story and setting up his world. I didn't need any of this. It tries to rationalise it all. DC's Aquaman just let you suspend your disbelief. And that worked fine. There are some very good shots of dark deep under the oceans though, which are pretty eye catching. Namor, in one comic feature they couldn't let go, has little wings on his ankles which let him fly. A bit. As Aquaman would say 'whoa dude, I saw that movie! It was called Piranha two flying kippers...er, killers.' Ie: it might have hurt hardcore comic fans to let these go. But it might not have hurt.
Namor and his folks are fighting Wakanda as mentioned. For whatever reason. So there's occasional set pieces. One of these early on with Riri Williams does try to get humour in but that just feels clunky. And you can't hear the dialogue in the first action set piece, because the music drowns it out.
Everyone fights to get ultimate control of the maguffin. And then, after long enough that M'Baku really should have said 'are you done yet?' once again:
Not a spoiler because it's obvious:
Another big battle scene! Which highlights something that has become a problem with these films for me. There's no jeopardy. You don't believe they are going to kill characters off. Because they've clearly got more story to come. So you can't feel gripped as you might have otherwise.
And don't get me started on the last scene we see of Agent Ross here, which shows the same kinds of double standards as I was talking about re colonialism. And frankly should have had him storming off in a huff.
One other flaw; [not a spoiler};
One end credits scene in the middle. And no extra scene at the end. I was not happy after sitting through such a long film to not be rewarded in a way you would expect. Which is a problem because if you build up a product to leave your customer expecting something, you should then deliver. And this doesn't.
I ummed and awed on two or three stars for this. I think three is fairer. It's not terrible. It just that the way they went with this didn't work for me. And it could be a sign of a film formula that might just have run it's life. Those who wanted these in 3d seem to have thankfully lost interest. Will the rest of the audience go the same way?
So if you want to get emotional and sing 'go strong woman! [South park reference] you'll be alright with this. Otherwise, might be time to jump off.
Will say though: the actor playing Namor does have a good screen presence, and his performance was the only one that stuck with me. And if they want to make Namor vs Piranha flying killers, I would be up for that. Or flying kippers. That would be fun.
