The film, after many prejudices, doubts and preconceptions having seen and re-seen the first memorable blockbuster Gladiator I, which put me in an attitude of skepticism for the success of this sequel, I must say is unexpectedly enjoyable and even if in some parts it becomes paradoxical. In short, the crazy baboons that bite, worse than lions, the riding of the rhinoceros but above all the sharks in the Colosseum. The historical reality was less exaggerated on these points but not entirely inferior to the cinematic fiction. The crowd in the Colosseum was truly impressive and the naval battles in the Colosseum are real. The emperors portrayed in the film are caricatures but they were not entirely distant from reality. I found this Gladiator II great, with a good pace. Instead of Paul Mescal I would have taken Aaron Taylor-Johnson however Mescal does a great acting part as does Pedro Pascal. While Denzel Washington is extraordinary and deserves an Oscar. What I would have changed the actors who played the emperors Geta and Caracalla. Probably the figure of Macrinus deserved to enter a third title and with a greater dilation of the events. Denzel Washington could have very well entered in Gladiator III and had more space and more relevance to the historical events.
A beautiful great film and we await the special steelbook edition and of course the third film.

Following the death of Maximus, his son Lucius is sent away for his own protection. Sixteen years later Lucius Verus lives under the alias Hanno with his wife Arishat in the Kingdom of Numidia. When the Roman army invades, under the orders of corrupt Emporer twins Geta and Caracalla, and led by General Acacius his wife is killed and Lucius becomes consumed with taking down Acacius who he blames for her death. Once captured, Lucius gains work as a Gladiator fighting for Macrinus, a man who has his own corrupt quest for power. Eventually all men find themselves on a collision course that will send the city of Rome into chaos.

I always had my doubts about a sequel to Gladiator, a film close to perfect that was never crying out for a sequel. I am always willing to be proven wrong though. Sadly I wasn't. The film started off fairly strongly with an exciting sea based siege against the city of Numidia but then it went downhill from there. There are angry CGI baboons that look like something that should belong in one of the Alien films, there are misjudged afterlife scenes that in the first film were subtle and beautiful but here are just embarrassing, then there are the villains who for me were way over the top and came across as pantomime villains. Pedro Pascal was the best out of a bad bunch villain wise, playing a conflicted character following orders until he could do the right things. The two emperors though, I found myself having to restrain myself from shouting at the screen "he's behind you" every time they appeared. Even the mighty Denzel Washington through subtlety out the door as the film progressed. I think Ridley Scott was offered a bunch of cash by greedy execs and he sat down, did a mind map involving Gladiators, Rome, angry monkeys and pantomimes, threw it all at the wall and hoped something would stick.

There are entertaining battles and fights to be found within the two and a half hour running time and Paul Mescal does his best with a mess of a movie but I left feeling mostly disappointed. I am glad I watched Gladiator before hand so I had fresh in my mind how great this kind of movie can be with the right cast, script and direction.

Gladiator 2 feels to me like Ridley Scott wanted to explore the world of Gladiator again (in the sense this feels a little like Gladiator with a different plot instead of a traditional sequel), but it's very well made, acted, and has some imaginative battle sequences.

In terms of the story itself, it presents the logical way forward after the events of Gladiator, and it has a bitter-sweet conclusion as, like Gladiator, the film is underpinned by tragedy.

I felt visually it was superior to the original movie in terms of set design, costumes, and overall style. But lacked that movies edge.

Poor script, stupid monkeys in the arena scene, Roman never used Trebuchets, laugable naval battle in the colliseum..... and poor off-brand soundtrack/music - where is Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard ?? (Just about 30 seconds reprise on the end titles) 🤷‍♂️

A waste of Paul Mescal, Perdro Pascal and the other top actors in it.

Ridley Scott has denigrated the/his most excellent Original Film.

I suppose it was better than Gods and Kings 😂
