- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 December 2024Finally the Transformers film we have been waiting for. Exploring the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron on their home planet of cybertron. The film does an excellent job at introducing the deeper lore and mythology of the transformers to new viewers and is stacked full of action, comedy and beautifully stunning visuals. The animation really is something new. The characters and landscapes have an animated but also realistic texture to them. It really looks beautiful in the 4k edition. But mainly, the storyline is well written and has a lot of touching and inspiring moments in it. Inspiring us that we all have the ability to choose to do the right thing. A great film! I really hope to see more sequels!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 December 2024The movie is a good length, I think. It was long enough to tell a good story, nothing groundbreaking. But cerially good enough. Not too long that it drags out or becomes boring.
Animation is top tier, lots of great use of colour and lighting.
A fun cast of characters. I was worried Bee would be too zany, but I warmed to him.
The movie strikes a good balance between humour and action. Some great set pieces, and good life lessons. 8.5/10 for me. A lot of stuff I saw coming, but it was still enjoyable to watch it play out. Which is why it is not a 9 or 10.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 December 2024Surprisingly good animated movie.
I have a soft spot for Transformers, but this movie really puts an enjoyable story together, with an excellent buildup for the final act.
Great voce acting work, surprisingly expressive animation and motion for the characters.
It could have used a few more minutes to flesh out the high guard, but when you want a movie with a more traditional screen time small sacrifices must be done to have the plot move.
Worth a watch, and a rewatch!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 December 2024Heard and seen alot of good reviews for this one. I haven't seen many transformers films or shows, but I can say this is definitely worth checking out, even if you don't know anything about the series. Adults and children will enjoy this film.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 December 2024Going back to the roots of the series (not that you need any prior knowledge) but with a much better script and excellent voice cast - loved by the whole family - boys 5 and 8 and even their mum (usually a Transformers hater) liked it too.
Best animated film of the year.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 December 2024Transformers are after my time childhood wise. I only got into the franchise when I saw the trailer for the first live action film in 2007. Thought that looks like my kind of thing.
And I loved it. I also knew there and then that Optimus Prime is the best character of the lot. Peter Cullen has the greatest voice ever.
I then spent years hoping the following films would measure up to the original. Almost at times. But never quite.
Now though comes an animated prequel to the whole thing. The apparently previously untold story of how they all came to be.
When I first saw the trailer for this I thought the animation and the voiceovers made it look firmly aimed at the under tens. So I was going to pass. I then saw it get nothing but good reviews. So I decided to give it a try...
Quick opening exposition narration fills you in on this planet where robots live underground. Their robot god created the place. Bad things happened. Some robots can transform. Some miner ones can't. Benevolent leader Sentinel Prime, the last of the prime robots, is searching above ground for the mcguffin of the movie.
This is well handled because I think anyone who had no experience of the franchise before could easily get it and get into it. Just from that part.
We then meet two miner droids. Orion Pax [Chris Hemsworth]. And his best friend D16 [Brian Tyree Henry]. The former is humorous, unfailingly optimistic, and always trying to improve his life. The latter gets him out of trouble. He can't get irked with Orion, though. They're such good friends that they'll be that way for life and nothing will ever come between them and drive them apart leaving them opposed forever. Or so it would seem.
The animation is really pretty good. Especially the backgrounds. There are times when the scale of things does make the droids look a bit too small. That was my only issue though. The trailer did not do it justice.
The first half of this is intriguing and holds the attention. And Orion's humour does drop away as things develop. There is clearly a bigger story going on, and it had me hooked wanting answers.
Second half gets to that. It then really clicks and goes up a level.
There's one amazing moment when you realise how well Orion works as a character. I really didn't see it coming. He and D16 both do get very good story arcs indeed that allow them to grow and change.
There are things that I am sure fans will appreciate continuity wise. It didn't hurt me at all not knowing them though.
Not a spoiler to say there is a big battle at a point. When that happens though you know who all the characters are. You care about them. And you can tell exactly what is going on.
The way it wraps things up are scenes I would imagine fans will be pleased by. It does manage some emotional heft with it.
This is really good. Glad I gave it a chance. Level of violence makes it a pg certificate. Also be aware of a couple of scenes that those bothered by flashing lights will have a problem with. Really glad I did give it a go though. More animated ones might be a good way forward for the franchise. So here's hoping.
One extra scene very early in the end credits. You have to stay for this. It's great.
One after the very end. Not as essential. But still good.
The dvd does begin with a brief logo screen which you have to let play out.
The language and subtitle options are:
Languages: English. French. Italian. Dutch.
Subtitles: English. French. Italian. Dutch.
And there are some extras. A rare thing on dvds of later. Three nine min long featurettes.
In the beginning. About the genesis of the project and the story.
World building on Cybertron. About the world design.
Together as one. About the characters and their design.
These are all comprehensive and have interesting interviews, so are worth a look.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 December 2024It’s set up for one so good. A transformers movie set exclusively during the war on cybertron would be the next best thing.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 December 2024I love the dramatic scenes and the story of how the transformers became auto bots and decepticons
How Megaron and optiumus prime become them
