- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 February 2024A four disc box set containing all ten episodes of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season two. I probably don't need to talk continuity to Star Trek Fans, but let's just say you are better off starting with season one of this. For all the character building and continuity the show has, as it all started there.
The episodes range in length from around fifty to sixty two mins [approx]. This can be a bit violent at times and does have some look at the horrors of war, so it's a fifteen certificate dvd and thus not really for younger viewers.
What this show does is as per it's first season. It has stand alone stories complete in a single episode. But it never hits the reset button at the end. Because there are character arcs that run across the course of the season. One in particular I thought was absolutely superb and got me really emotionally involved in it. Spoilers.
There's one new main character who is really great.
It tells a different variety of stories also. Some of which Star Trek fans will have seen before. Like a trial. Or a time travel one. Or someone being changed into a slightly different being. But it makes them work and feel fresh. This by making it all solidly character driven.
It also does get experimental, doing a very unique crossover episode. It will help to be familiar with the show Star Trek: Lower Decks for that one. This episode is fun but also has some great themes which are pretty subtle. So it clicks.
Then there's the musical episode. Which you will either love, if you're going to give it a chance. Or will hate if you don't like musicals. I fitted into the former category for this one, because it's not singing for the sake of it and it fits into the season so well.
There's also one very powerful and thought provoking episode that looks at the effect war has on those who survive it, and considers if you can ever let things go. Or not.
The season finale An excellent one at that. Remember how we all reacted to the end of Next Generation season three? This should get you the same way.
As someone who has watched Star Trek since the seventies and thus has a lot of experience with the franchise to draw on, I love this show. It's proper Star Trek. It does exactly what I want from it. Can't wait for season three.
The dvds have the following language and subtitle options:
Languages: English. [United States. It says]. Parisian French.
Subtitles: English. [United States]. Parisian French.
There are some scenes across the season with flashing lights, so anyone sensitive to that please be aware.
Extras:
Some deleted/extended/alternate scenes. Episodes one, three, five, six, seven, eight and nine have these. All accessed via the episode menu. Some have unfinished visual effects. These range in length from thirty seconds to five mins. These are all good but you can see they're the kind of thing that gets cut for time. Although one from episode six I thought was superb.
Features:
All on the final disc.
Producing Props. Fifteen mins about the work of the props dept. and some of the things they've done for the season.
Costumes closet. Fifteen mins as above but about costumes instead.
The Gorn. A fifteen min long overdue of how the aliens in question were realised for the show.
These are good extras. In depth and interesting viewing.
Signing in space. Twenty one mins about the musical episode. A really good watch as it goes into great and interesting detail about it. The kind of thing you want a making of to be.
Exploring strange new worlds. A forty five min long overview of the season. Looking at all the episodes apart from the musical one as that was done in the above. This is also good viewing as it makes you think about the episodes and what they endeavoured to do. It does spend a bit too long on the second one and thus feels like it slightly rushes some of the others. But that's only a minor complaint.
Great show. Great season. Great box set.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 December 2024Enjoyed season one, had to buy season 2. Picture quality on 4k is superb.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 October 2024Lifelong Trekkie, from TOS original air dates. Felt that this could be a spin off that detracted from that, but like the other spin offs, this is good and VERY enjoyable. Great effects and stories with some comedic parts. Well enjoyed. Already had season 1 and for which the same comments apply.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 January 2024After season one finished, we had to wait for this one, it gets going at a reasonable pace and rarely slows down, my wife's favourite episode is 'charades' this involves T'pring's mother and Father, but no spoilers as I should let you watch it yourselves. the plots are more developed than season one, and they seem to be fitting into their roles, some new characters turn up plus a few twist stories. By now every fan will know about the musical episode 'subspace rhapsody' this is a Marmite story, love or hate it, what I can tell you is the cast can sing, and Uhura can belt one out, single handed. The season ends on a cliffhanger, like all good shows, it leaves you champing at the bit for more, get on with it please, you can't make these fast enough.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 November 2024Star Trek as was and should be without all the pandering to cultural marxist ideology.
Good escapist sci-fi without the sick nonsense of some previous and unwatchable iterations of Star Trek, which sullied the franchise.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 December 2023This second of "Star Trek Strange New Worlds" breaks new ground in many ways. Though a storyline runs through the series the episodes can be watched as "standalones" rather than having to follow the serial. Individual episodes highlight individual key characters and their relationships, all well produced and well acted.
If I were to make a couple of criticisms, the first and most obvious would be that there are only ten episodes in this season (we used to get over 20 in the classic 'Star Trek" series up to and including "Enterprise"). The second is a matter of taste: the musical episode didn't sit well with me: where on board was the orchestra which plays backing to the musical numbers? Surely, in space, no-one can hear you sing; and, last but not least, going musical is a lazy way of making 20 minutes of material fill a one-hour show. This "blunder" is however offset by the "Lower Decks" crossover episode, another inventive outlier which is simply brilliant.
Now that Jim Kirk has been introduced (as a lieutenant on a different Starfleet vessel) I'm still wondering how many seasons remain before "Strange New Worlds" wraps round into the timeline of "The Cage" but the cliffhanger finale of Season 2 makes it clear that there must be at least one more. Long may "Strange New Worlds" live and prosper.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 December 2023The actual content received is very good (at this writing I am still on Disk 2), and was delivered in excellent condition by the retailer.
What I don't like is directed at the *SUPPLIER* CBS/Paramount. I resent having to skip over about 5 chapters explaining that I really ought to have an Ultra HD television set; this happens whenever I start my Blu-Ray player with this disk.
I recognize that the producers are very keen that the Blu-Ray is viewed with optimal equipment; I had made the purchase with the intention of buying an UHD TV in the future.
It would be better by far in my view to provide this advice after the viewer of the disk has selected their preferred language. This would reduce the amount of verbiage that we have to get through, including all the copyright /stuff/.
Another question - I bought the Kelvin Timeline Star Trek Movie in UHD, and I could just enjoy the presentation without the nagging.about my only having a HD TV.
Why annoy your customers??

1.0 out of 5 stars Bella serie ottimi attori ma l’Italiano?
Bella serie, ottimi attori, effetti speciali non abusati ma la lingua italiana?
Il doppiaggio effettuato per lo streaming non è presente nei supporti ottici un vero peccato che fa cadere tutto il valore del cofanetto.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic series, cant wait now to see Season 3
What a great Star Trek series. It is more like the original Star Trek series but with interesting twists, including a Star Trek musical and a cartoon swap over. We absolutely recommend this series (along with Series 1) to all the die hard Trekkies and even those who like sci fi series.
Can't wait for future series to come out on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Estranha nova temporada de novos mundos
boa temporada de star Trek, o SNW é um regresso à série original de estrelas de estrelas, tratando de questões filosóficas. a época inclui o episódio de crossover com decks mais baixos de star Trek e o episódio musical, o que foi realmente muito bom.
