Key Characters

Wreck-It Ralph

Ralph is a heavy-handed 'wrecking riot' with a heart. For 30 years, he's been doing his job as the bad guy in the arcade game Fix-It Felix, Jr. But it's getting harder and harder to love his job when no one seems to like him for doing it. Suffering from a classic case of 'bad guy fatigue' and hungry for a little 'wreck-ognition', Ralph embarks on a wild adventure across an incredible arcade game universe to prove that just because he's a bad guy doesn't mean he's a 'bad guy'.

Vanellope von Schweetz

Known as the 'Glitch', Vanellope is a pixelating programming mistake in the candy-coated cart-racing game Sugar Rush. With a racer's spirit embedded in her coding, Vanellope is determined to earn her place in the starting lineup amongst the other racers. The only problem: the other racers don't want her or her glitching in the game. Years of rejection have left Vanellope with a wicked sense of humour and a razor-sharp tongue. However, somewhere beneath that hard shell is a sweet centre just waiting to be revealed.

Fix-It-Felix, Jr.

Felix is the very popular star of Fix-It Felix, Jr. and Niceland's hammer-wielding maintenance man who's beloved by all. When he is not busy fixin' all of Ralph's wreckin', this gold-medal-winning good guy is being showered with kisses, praise, and pies from his tenants. Hardwired for niceness, anything other than being 'The Good Guy' just doesn't compute.

Product description

Product Description

Wreck-It Ralph (voice of Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game's perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes... so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan -- win a medal -- but soon wrecks everything, and accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph's only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Silverman), a young troublemaking "glitch" from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it's "Game Over" for the entire arcade?

ÍøÆغÚÁÏ.co.uk Review

Cinema loves a great villain, but for Ralph--the star of this sweet-natured fairytale about a video game character in search of a higher purpose--it’s a thankless task. He’s just a blue-collar bad guy from the retro arcade Fix-It Felix, Jr., doing his best against its handyman hero Felix and coldly abided by his game-mates as a necessary evil. Obviously, nobody voiced by John C. Reilly can truly be evil--and from his lonely landfill Ralph dreams of escaping the natural order of things. He’s just one of a metropolis of familiar faces--including Sonic the Hedgehog, Q*bert, and the paddles from Pong--that dwell in Mr. Litwak’s Video Arcade, commuting to and from their games via Game Central Station, a majestic hub of power sockets, slotted with diagonal blades of sunlight in the classic image of Grand Central Station. Steadily losing heart at Bad Guys Anonymous, Ralph sets out to conquer his hard-coded destiny, enlisting in the first person shooter Hero’s Duty and hitting rock bottom in the acrylic racing game Sugar Rush. This is Disney, where the doors of redemption never close, and Ralph inadvertently becomes the personal hero of Vanellope--played by Sarah Silverman--a lonely kart racer with a head full of dreams, bullied by the other girl-racers for a glitch in her programming. ‘We can’t change who we are’, reflects one of Pac-Man’s nemeses, and only an escalating crisis, involving a virus-like infestation and the threatened unplugging of the arcade machine, can teach Ralph and Vanellope a few thine-own-self lessons on the virtues of acceptance, belonging and taking each game as it comes. Full of underdog charm and video game nostalgia, Wreck-it-Ralph is both an endearing children’s fable and an update of Toy Story for the coin-op generation, inviting us to pour our own childhoods into its toy-coloured brightness. So: whether your childhood possessions were pulled with a string or spurred with a coin, we should all make way for the bad guy. --Leo Batchelor

Video games have been around for a good few years now. Children of the 1970's will well remember shovelling ten pence pieces into amusement arcade machines that had graphics which are not at all sophisticated by the standard of more modern efforts, but had gameplay which kept you hooked. And which you never forgot.

    Nostalgia can never be underestimated.

Wreck It Ralph is a CG animation movie which draws on those halcyon days for inspiration. Ralph himself [John C. Reilly] is the bad guy in a game called Fix it Felix Jr, wherein his efforts to destroy a fancy new apartment block are thwarted by an heroic good guy carpenter.

For thirty years, the game machine has been present in an arcade. Decades which have seen other games come and go. Popular characters be forgotten. But in all that time, Ralph has been doing the same thankless job day in day out. This, like Toy Story, features characters who come to life when people aren't watching.

After thirty years of being the bad guy, Ralph's having a life crisis. Looking for a little self respect, he breaks all the rules and leaves his game and gets into a much more modern shoot 'em up in an effort to get a medal. Doing so has consequences, and puts everyone in the arcade under threat.

Can Ralph save the day? Or will he live up to his name?

This is a bit of a movie of two halves. The first is fabulously inventive with an amazing amount of detail and sight gags, and some pretty clever comparisons of old and more modern graphics styles. Retro gamers will delight at some of the sights and characters on offer.

The second half of the film, as Ralph gets involved with events in one particular game, and the struggles of Vanellope Von Schweetz [Sarah Silverman] to be treated with respect in a world that hates her. From this moment on the game references do rather vanish and the film becomes more story based. Vanellope is a character who starts off annoying but you have to bear with her as she mellows. The two have the kind of relationship where each learns life lessons from the other. Although retro gamers might be disappointed with this half of the movie, it is a very strong story and drama. It's also pretty well written with some excellent set pieces and some very good plotting. With a few moments that will surprise.

You can see from the start this is going to be one of those 'just be yourself' movies. But the message is fine, and well delivered in a film that does offer a lot of fun for all generations. From the Space Invaders one to the X Box one.

Do keep watching during the end credits, as the first half of these is animated, and uses a variety of graphic styles that gamers will enjoy seeing.

    The dvd has the following language and subtitle options;

    Languages: English, Italian.

    Subtitles: English, Italian.

It begins with several trailers, but you can skip these via the next button on the dvd remote. All of them, along with a couple of adverts, are in the sneak peeks section of the dvd menu anyhow.

The only extra is a short cartoon film called Paperman. A story of a man in a black and white city breaking convention to pursue a dream, it has a stunningly beautiful look to it, and some remarkable character animation. Thanks not least to the animation having been done over images of live actors. Short but beautifully sweet, it's probably not something younger children will appreciate, but anyone older and shamelessly romantic find it a beautiful piece of work that deserved all the awards it got.

At the same time as it being great movie, it also conveys a very important message about the value of teamwork and relationships between everyone. This movie not only captivates those who enjoy video games, but also provides entire families with a good and valuable time necessary for improving and polishing their bonds with one another.

Another Disney classic. Growing up playing video games in the late 80's and 90's meant i appreciated this so much. There's so many little jokes that are sound effects, or clever script writing hinting at games, and it merges the games and certain aspects of my youth and childhood into a great story. But the story is the best bit. In some ways it's the same as every story, especially disney stories, and is what you expect, yet thoroughly entertaining and moving. You don't need to know the games to appreciate the jokes or enjoy this movie, although i think i appreciated it in a way that my wife and son didn't. I know my gaming friends loved it a little more than my non-gaming ones, but it's similar to Toy Story, as you can still really enjoy Toy Story but have never owned the toys. It's one of the better Disney movies, and one of the best animated movies i've seen in the last few years. I hope you enjoy it as much as my family :)

So happy to play this and come across the unmistakeable voices of Sarah Silverman and Jane Lynch. Great performances.
It's a classic story about finding happiness in an otherwise dull and drab existence. What's interesting is the way virtual games from different eras are brought together, bridging the age gap and helping viewers of all ages relate to the film. And the way game characters and their traits were used to fabricate an entire community of arcade games is fabulous.
What I wasn't particularly impressed with was the dialogue. It didn't seem very original or inspiring. But my 6yo was wowed, for sure.

When I first saw that Disney was making a film based on videogames, I was conflicted. Sure, Disney have created some of the most timeless, beloved and classic movies of the past near-three-quarters of a century, but they could also screw it up horribly. And, as a gamer, I would know. This must be what Native Americans thought when they saw Pocahontas.

Fortunately, I needn't have worried. This movie almost won an Oscar for a reason, people!

Words cannot express with any genuine degree of accuracy how I feel about this movie. I only rated it five stars because that is the restriction ÍøÆغÚÁÏ has set; were it ten stars, I would give ten; a hundred for a hundred, etc.

I won't go into an explanation about the basic plot and setting; chances are you already know it, and, if not, you can go find it in any other review. All you need to know from me is that it's a severe understatement that I completely, utterly and absolutely ADORE Wreck-It Ralph! And I whole-being-ly recommend it to absolutely everyone!!

Wreck-It Ralph is a 2012 American computer-animated family-comedy film[4] produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures.[5] It is the 52nd animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. The film was directed by Rich Moore, who has directed episodes of The Simpsons and Futurama, and the screenplay was written by Jennifer Lee and Phil Johnston from a story by Moore, Johnston and Jim Reardon. John Lasseter served as the executive producer. The film features the voices of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, and Jane Lynch. A tribute to over 30 years of the gaming industry, the film tells the story of the eponymous arcade game villain who rebels against his role and dreams of becoming a hero. He travels between games in the arcade, and ultimately must eliminate a dire threat that could affect the entire arcade, and one that Ralph himself inadvertently started

I gave this movie to my grand-daughter for Easter. She's watched it at least twice a week since she received it. It was a nicer copy than the one my daughter had borrowed and they are thrilled to have a copy of their own. Shipping was prompt.
