Product description
Disney's animated sci-fi version of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic adventure tale 'Treasure Island'. When he is given a star map with directions to a remote planet where space pirates store their treasure, Jim Hawkins realises this is his chance to embark on a life of adventure and signs himself up as a crew member on the spaceship R.L.S. Legacy. The Legacy soon blasts off in search of the Treasure Planet, but it is not long before rumours of mutiny begin to spread, with the part-cyborg Long John Silver leading the way.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 August 2010I've always enjoyed this film, and what makes it good is that it centres on how it must feel to grow up without a parent. Fifteen year old Jim Hawkins just so happens to have no father, and this makes it hard for his mother to teach him anything, and also proves that it really is a bad thing to be bereft of a male role model which is what Jim really needs. Good at getting himself into trouble and a cool dude, he must contend with robotic policemen, until he finds that he's in for a treat much later when pirate Billy Bones leaves an orb shaped map in Jim's possession. To Jim's delight, the map soon turns out to contain the entire solar system, and the fabled Treasure Planet. This discovery sparks the interest of astrophysicist Dr. Delbert Doppler who is half man, half dog, and the two of them later land on the space port which makes up the moon. As soon as they board the RLS Legacy (great name!) Jim has to watch himself as a gang of pirates make up the crew, and slowly but gradually he makes friends with the cook, Long John Silver, and Morph, a cute pink blob with goggly eyes that can take on lots of different appearances. Emma Thompson provides witty humour as feline Captain Amelia, and works very well as an animated character in comparison to her many other characters from unanimated films. It's all high rides, adventure and fun, and incredibly entertaining. I think the Special Features are really cool, and some of it is really interesting, like the making of the film and the magic of Disney animation, particularly in this film as it's an incredibly popular story and Robert Louis Stevenson is a very well known author. Then there's the more technical stuff, such as a look into how Silver's cyborg eye, robotic arm and peg leg were put into animation, which is pretty fantastic. My favourite Special Feature is the RLS Legacy game because it keeps your mind busy and your brain working. I enjoy this film a lot and even though I haven't read the book it is based on, I do know what it's about, and I have to say that Disney do stick to a classic to the best of their ability. It's a very well executed take on "Treasure Island", and suitable for both boys and girls.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 November 2015Disney during its "boys age" (just after it released the Disney princesses and just before it bought marvel) tried hard to appeal to the male Demographic. And if I could complain about anything in this amazing film, it does feel as if its pandering to boys (and apparently really stupid ones too) a tad much - with superfluous "sky surfing" sequences and way more action than it has intrigue.
The novel was focused largely on whether or not you could trust Long John Silver, he's adventure and charisma and charm personified, but also a mass murderer and quite the secret keeper; the movie makes it clear he's inherently good ("methinks you have a soft... Spot for him," says Scroop as he rather heavy handedly impales a grape) and the addition of Scroop himself (a villain even evil let than he) serves to absolve him from blame.
It's the same with Frozen - Hans exists purely so Elsa can look innocent, whereas the source material makes no mistake that the snow queen is a morally ambiguous force of nature.
Which brings me to my firm belief that treasure planet represents something rare: a sympathetic Disney villain. He's not Elsa crying in a corner, Nor is he the extremely manipulative parent you find in Mother Gothel. Silver is this amazing study in morality and how greed can push good people to do bad things.
Kids will love the visuals of this steampunk-esque universe, and it's amazingly nuanced villain, lack of love interests that derail the plot, and it's message on rebuilding your life after the loss of a parent, is a rarity that you won't find from Disney nowadays. Be sure to get it!!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 April 2015So happy to find this childhood favourite after so long. One of my rare sci-fi loves and a wonderful adaptation of the Classic Treasure Island story, with imaginative world-building and new takes on the classic cast.
The animation is lovely and has aged well (I can't think of any other film off the top of my head over a decade old with animation that still looks like it could have been drawn yesterday). The designs themselves are very much like Steampunk and have some of the quirkiness that goes really well with the beautiful world that is created around them. Also the alien characters are varied and interesting to look at. I still spot new things in crowd scenes that make me smile and I had not seen before, which is impressive for hand-drawn animation.
The music still sticks with me the same way the Lion King's does (not just the songs, but the musical score too).
But also the characters themselves are very fleshed out and their relationships with one another are realistic and relatable, making you want to laugh and sometimes cry.
Not the most loyal adaptation but certainly memorable with heart-tugging moments that makes this possibly one of Disney's best.

die ich für meine jungen Cousins gekauft habe. Es ist eine wunderbare alternative Version der Schatzinsel. Aufregend und mit einer guten Story. Kinder genießen es, und selbst Erwachsene tun es.
