Key Characters
Arthur
Arthur is a 12-year-old orphan with blond hair and is very scrawny and awkward, but also friendly and polite. He has a rich imagination and dreams of becoming a knight and having adventures.
Merlin
Merlin is a wizard of unspecified origin, who is first seen living in a forest cottage. He is a very wise character who believes in the philosophy of "Brain over Brawn." To this end, Merlin values education as opposed to the war-training philosophies shared by much of the rest of society.
Sir Ector
Sir Ector was one of Uther Pendragon's knights. He is heavyset in appearance with red hair and a primitive attitude; preferring more practical concepts like fighting and war training over educational pursuits. At some point, he adopted the orphaned Arthur but cared very little about him beyond the obligation of guardianship.
Product description
The Disney version of the early life of King Arthur. Brought up as a scullery boy with the nickname of Wart, Arthur goes through important magical training at the hands of the wise wizard Merlin. It transpires that the sorceror has the boy earmarked for greater things, but Arthur must undergo a number of tests before he can fulfil his destiny.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 December 2024Never saw this film but have got for my collection of classic Disney films that stood family values back in the day of founder Walt Disney sadly lacking today. Get if a fan Old style classic Disney.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 June 2016Style Name: SingleVerified PurchaseI remember loving this little Disney movie as a child. I say 'little' movie, as it isn't one that is often remembered by viewers. The story is based on the legend of Arthur and is told here as only Disney could tell it. The animation is good ole fashioned hand drawn Disney animation and features many of the voice cast that will be familiar to regular Disney movie goers of the time. To me this movie falls into the same category as say Robin Hood; both good fun movies that give the Disney treatment to stories that we have heard and seen retold time and time again. The songs from Sword in the Stone I find very memorable but I also don't find the film to reliant on songs which to be was always a plus. Some of the Disney movies, even the best loved ones, to me are too song heavy, so this film with its almost light spattering of songs is a delight. In terms of quality, the picture is reasonable though it of course doesn't compare to more recent offerings from the studio. The sound is solid and clean, however I can really only draw comparison from my memories of an old recording I had on video of a broadcast on ITV back in the late 80's. This was one of the few Disney animated classics that was always getting an airing on a Bank Holiday Monday. The extras however do let it down. Mainly a direct port from the previous releases, but a early version of an alternate beginning has been added, but none of this really warrants the 50th anniversary edition status, in my mind anyway. To sum up, a good movie that deserves to be revisited, and without a doubt should be considered.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 February 2024This film is great watching alone or with family
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 February 2018The Sword In The Stone is a very charming and relaxing movie to watch. Just like any Disney feature animation, you want humour, emotions, songs and a happy ending and this movie fulfills all of these and more. Most of the humour comes from Sir Ektor(voice of Sebastian Cabot) and Archimedes (voice of Junius Matthews), but Merlin (voice of Karl Swenson) had some truly delicious lines. I just love Archimedes, he is absolutely hilarious, and still manages to be likable, despite being very grumpy. The animation was ver classic looking and extremely lovely, and the scenes when Wart (voice of Ricky Sorenson) was turned into various animals (a fish, squirrel and bird) were truly entertaining. The duel between Merlin and Madam Mim was the highlight of the film for me. I remember seeing that scene years ago and I absolutely loved it. The songs by the Sherman Brothers, while not particularly memorable, were very pleasant to listen to, as was the incidental music by the composer of the Jungle Book, George Bruns. All in all, a truly enjoyable movie, that is definitely underrated. Highly recommended to watch with the family.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 October 2022The Sword in the Stone is a true Disney classic based on the story of King Arthur. Some memorable characters and catchy tunes make this a favourite for everyone. It’s been a favourite of mine since I was a little girl, joining the likes of Basil the Great Mouse Detective and Robin Hood.
Swift delivery made it all the better to gift it to my 6 year old who also loves it 👍🏻
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 July 2014Loved this film as a child and have wanted to get it on DVD for ages. It didn't disappoint, my husband and I found it as good and as funny as we remembered. It has some of the most hilarious characters and witty lines of any Disney film, in my opinion.
The colour looks like it has been brightened up for DVD but other than that the quality of the animation looks untouched, it certainly doesn't look overly remastered and it has the excellent hand-drawn quality of the great old Disney films.
The one downside is that there wasn't a widescreen option so it looks a bit square and boxy on a big modern TV, but you stop noticing that after about 30 seconds and just enjoy the film.
There are also a couple of little extra animations; a Goofy-style one about knights and a Mickey one, possibly others that we haven't watched yet.
Overall, if you liked this as a kid you will still love it, and if you've never seen it before, splash out your £5 and see it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a Favarite After 60 years!
Style Name: SingleVerified PurchaseNowdays, CGI and 3D computer animation is filling our screens with emersive graphics and quickly devised musicals, but sometimes it still feels flat. The humor and fantasy are lost in social underlines. Disney animated productions used to be well tuned, including humorous well-scripted non-political storylines and fantasy. Sword in the Stone is a fantasy off-shoot of the Arthurian legend in a feature length hand animated classic. Arthur is referred to as The Wart, the evil sorcerous is referred to as Madam Mim and along with a talking owl, we have the magical Merlin, stuck in an era without modern conveniences. I love the lighthearted songs included in the movie and wonder how many were rejected by Walt at a time when he would reject various songs because he felt the did not fit right. Buy this movie for yourselves and your children. ZZZThe quality shines through, even on large modern day 4K TVs, as long as you accept pre-computer animations.

5.0 out of 5 stars The original is the best!
The 1963 version of The Sword In The Stone can't be improved upon. If you are trying to decide whether to purchase this version or the updated version, I wholeheartedly recommend you purchase the original 1963 version.
