Key Characters
Little John
Nothing is known regarding Little John's past. However, he is the best friend and sidekick to Robin Hood. Little John appears to be more cautious than Robin Hood and often reminds his friend of potential consequences of his plans. However, Little John is shown to be extremely loyal to his friend, going so far as to threaten Prince John when the tyrant sentences Robin to death for treason. When not participating in one of Robin's plans, Little John is shown to be fairly laid back, while also offering good advice to Robin.
Prince John
Prince John is a coward and a crybaby, who after his brother King Richard is brainwashed into going on a crusade, assumes the crown and becomes somewhat of a dictator, leaving his subjects in poverty. He is based on the real-life King John of England.
Maid Marian
She and Robin Hood have known each other since they were young children and fell in love as they got older. However, several years before the events of the film, she left for London for unspecified reasons and had only recently returned to Nottingham.
Maid Marian is a very beautiful, ladylike, nice and kind woman. Despite being separated from him, Maid Marian is still very much in love with Robin Hood as he loves her. So much so that she finds the courage to plead for his life.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 November 2024Bought for a gift! So happy to see it’s still available. Grand daughter very happy.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 February 2018I've watched this movie so many times, I can no longer count, and every time I watch it, I enjoy it so much more! I really think this is one of the most underrated Disney movies out there.
This version of Robin Hood has animals in the roles of the characters, and it works brilliantly. It would be natural for Robin Hood to be a fox if he was an animal, for both the fox and Robin are very clever. And if Robin Hood is a fox, naturally, Maid Marian would be a very pretty looking vixen. Also, having Prince John and King Richard as lions are natural choices, since the lion is the King of the Jungle.
What I loved most about the film is the humor, most of it provided by Prince John, Sir Hiss (a snake), Trigger, and Nutsy (both vultures). Prince John's habit of sucking his thumb whenever anyone mentions his mother is rather silly but priceless! And he's so vain it's little trouble for Robin Hood and Little John (a bear) to rob him when they're disguised as fortune-tellers! Sir Hiss is smarter than any of the other bad guys, but the humor with him is that Prince John never believes him until it's too late, and abuses him afterwards. Trigger's "old Betsy" (a crossbow) provides plenty of action when it goes off! And Nutsy’s smartness can be seen when he says "One o'clock and all's well!" when it's three o'clock & when his told to set his brain ahead a couple hours, he doesn't know if he has to add or subtract two hours!
I absolutely hate the Sheriff (a wolf). For me his the most hated Disney villain around that I get soooooo pleased every time I see him get his comeuppance at the end of the movie.
Many other animals such as rabbits, a badger (Friar tuck), mice, a tortoise and a dog make up various other characters in the movie.
There are minor flaws throughout various scenes in the movie but they don’t take away anything from the sheer enjoyment of watching this classic! Very Highly recommended movie.
I’m glad I purchased this movie and look forward to watching it with my daughter again and again.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 March 2024My four girls favourite Disney film when they were young and now in late 20,s and:0,s still love it
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 January 2019Pretty good! It ain't no Hunchback or Mulan, but it's got a lot of charm. Creativity, imagination, and skill in animation goes without saying because it's Disney, but I was surprised how much I enjoyed this. I could do with a bit less weeping and a bit more action from Marion when Robin's in mortal peril, but hey-ho. I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt, and assume that stalling with tears was the best she could think of in the moment.
All in all, really enjoyable. In particular worth watching for Prince John, Sir Hiss, and Lady Kluck, who are clearly the best characters :)
